Why is WB sidelining Martian Manhunter for DCCU?

It was when they fought that giant crab thing.

He was in comics long before the show, then Flashpoint erased it

Actually, he's sort of a weird example. He was originally conceived for the show, and the writer at the time liked him so much he brought him over into the comics before the show even aired.

Cyborg and Aquaman arguably have larger name recognition than J'onn and Hawkgirl, not to mention that who was a founder way back when in other media doesn't really make much difference to how DC and WB goes about these things any more.

I would love a Martian Manhunter movie though, loving his current series big time. In fact just make a Mr Biscuits movie and fuck the rest.

Honestly it pretty much is an attempt to (in a rare moment of foresight for DC) have the movie lineup reflect the current, default comic line up - and since MM isn't a part of that, he isn't a part of the movies either. Shazam's kinda ambiguous since Johns has clearly wanted to do more with the character for a long time, but having first dibs on basically everything at DC has kept him from actually using the character much beyond their New 52 origin. He has however been one the most recurring DC characters in adaptations for the last decade or so, starting with (as Captain Marvel, of course) with his first appearance in Justice League, making several appearances on Batman: The Brave and the Bold, Young Justice, several of the DTV movies (and even being the star of one - albeit as the main piece in a collection), and appearing in several of the video games, most predominantly Mortal Kombat and Injustice, when you consider how otherwise limited the available cast are (compared to say, Lego Batman).

I dunno if its purely because Johns likes him from his days working on Justice Society of America, or if DC is trying (and repeatedly failing/missing the point) to reignite whatever spark made Captain Marvel the big seller of the golden age of comics.

I think Shazam is Johns' way of having a defacto "magic" character on the team. I love MM, but in terms of what he represents in a practical sense, he's somewhat redundant. The current JL has:

  • Superman - Required, really
  • Wonder Woman - Also required. Represents mythological pantheons and war.
  • Batman - Also required. Represents detective skills and humanity.
  • Flash - Speed, speedforce, physics, time travel.
  • Green Lantern - Space/Cosmic stuff.
  • Aquaman - The Seven Seas
  • Cyborg - Technology, now also a connection to Fourth World stuff

When you look at that lineup, the magic aspect of the team is nonexistent other than Wonder Woman's interaction with the gods. All throughout Morrison, Waid, Kelly, etc's runs on the book, they'd have to bring in the reserves every time there's a magical threat. Shazam is where you bring the magic to the team.

And I love Martian Manhunter, but I've always found him a bit redundant to Superman and Green Lantern. The telepathy is a nice aspect to have, but DC's never been heavy on those types of characters and threats (save for maybe Despero).

I'm fine with ditching him for Cyborg because, honestly, Cyborg is a character that deserves to be elevated from the Teen Titans to the JL. One of the biggest conversations you'd see online regarding Cyborg before the New 52 is whether or not DC was finally going to graduate him to the big leagues. The character just fits because he's still one of the most ordinary of all the Leaguers despite being the least (physically) human.

Also, just because they've announced the casting of Cyborg, that doesn't rule out MM. MM is going into pre-production early next year, it's hard to know for certain what their plans are (but they definitely are pushing Cyborg more)

Exactly. And Vision looks incredible. Fantastic marriage of CGI and Practical effects for his costume.

So piss off, people who say Martian Manhunter can't work visuallly irl

Blue man group reject... sorry, but he looked absolutely terrible on an IMAX screen. I pray to god DC doesn't touch that design direction with a ten foot pole. Do him fully CG and he'll work. We live in a world where good CG will get us a really good representation of Martian Manhunter.

Yeah, I thought Vision looked like garbage. Between the wet paint look of his skin and the typical Marvel costume design of everything looking like it's made out of basketballs, I was really disappointed.

I agree with pretty much everything here, even though I do find Cyborg terribly boring.

I also saw it on an IMAX screen and thought he looked amazing so j guess we're tied.

Parallax

best seen in the classic "Shadow of the Beast"

Damien would have totally call Static "Negro" at some point;.

That team would have only worked with static as team leader, while having damien taking constant swipes at his leadership before becoming attached. And brown in the trash where she belongs

Vision's look being divisive is so weird. You're not the first person I've seen dislike it though.

I think Shazam is on the league just because Johns loves the character. He does fill the magic role that has been missing from the team (especially since he's visually more magical in the reboot), and I think he deserves to be on the team given his real world history. He could easily be as popular as the rest of the league if given some exposure.

I know. Yet refers to GJ's promise that he would incorporate him soon.

Soon being the beginning of the N52.

Him being CCO really messed with his comic workload. We're finally getting around to Seven Seas, which was teased 2 years or so ago, maybe we'll see Kaldur from one of the other kingdoms, if not Xebel.

It could've been better, even if they kept the actor and added some more detail to his face. The issue was, for me, it comes across as all face paint. Like this close up looks better:

But from the normal distance, you lose all that detail and his face becomes really shiny and wet face paint. Marvel was bound to have a miss eventually though.

He's sidelined because he's a ridiculous, ridiculous character.

That's not to say he can't be used in cool ways, but check it - dude is God-tier telepathic, can phase at will, is as strong as Superman, can fucking shapeshift, flies with ease, and his one weakness?

Fire.

Which is an irrational fear as very little can actually hurt him. Dude is a one man JL on his own, as shown by the pic of him taking the entire JL on by himself. He does not work at all in Snyder's universe.

As I said in the Supergirl thread:

David Goyer:
"Martian Manhunter
is lame and goofy."
Greg Berlanti: "Fuck you. Here's
Martian Manhunter!
"

Berlanti is the hero that DC deserves. This man gave us
King Shark, Gorilla City, and Martian Manhunter
in the span of a month or so.

I am so giddy right now

which is amazing seeing as Goyer's ideas are completely lame and goofy as fuck

Blade and Blade Trinity weren't too bad, idea-wise. Neither was Batman Begins.

Though, he definitely shouldn't have directed Trinity, but that movie had a whole host of problems not limited to him.

Nah Trinity was bad. I don't know if that's all him yeah but it's bad.

I said "idea-wise." I didn't say the movie was good. It's not, but it had some cool ideas. Blade passing the torch, what'll he do when the war is over, stuff like that. I thought the movie had a lot of good ideas that just ended up being a shredded mess of a movie. Most of the action sequences aren't even very good. At all.
