Dave Chappelle partners with start-up that prevents people from recording shows

Magic! Or numbered envelopes. Either way.

Would you trust your phone at the venue with employees? Would you trust them to return your phone and not give your phone to someone else accidentally that could then have your personal information if they leave the venue?

There's all kinds of security problems with this in a way. This "solution" works because it stops the person from being able to use their phone (should go a step further and prevent them from being able to take calls/texts in the area. Which from what it sounds like it should do but I don't see any mention of RFID blockers that are similar to the bags that police use to keep cell-phones from being functional on a cell network as evidence is collected) WHILE keeping their phones on them so no information loss/security risks.

ever been to a coat check?

Coat check is slightly different given they tag those and are smaller amount of people. You can tag the phones, sure. But given how many people are going to be in a venue (1,000+) stickering their phones AND going through 1,000+ phones seems a scaling problem.

Sounds great to me. Nothing ruins a good concert or other live event like the glow of a hundred cell phone screens in front of you.

Wouldn't it be easier to just warn the people who are recording and then kicking them out if they don't comply?

Like that Alamo Filmhouse thing that doesn't allow you to use cellphones during the movie?

How much more effective is this than having a simple phone check at the door like a coat check. Hand them your phone, get a ticket. When you leave, hand them your ticket, get your phone back. Seems so much more simple and low tech.

Because then some young entrepreneur wouldn't be able to create a tech start-up out of a perceived problem which a stand-up comedian could invest in just before the startup bubble bursts into a billion pieces.

What if I get an emergency call?

Not that the general idea is bad, but it doesn't seem prepared for every situation.

you will still see it and you are free to leave the room. Since the signal is likely targeted to sleeves inside the hall, you would simply have it unlocked upon exiting, either automatically or manually. It's really not a very complex system or even a hassle of any kind. Seriously, what kind of person even gets an "emergency call" during a show and doesn't exit the goddamn room to answer it?

Fuck no. I also wouldn't trust it in some pouch that stops it from working. Not gonna go incommunicado just because some dude is insecure, no matter what the solution is. If you are confiscating my property in order that I may attend, I'll sit it out thanks.

Sounds good to me. If you get upset because you can't go an hour or two without burning your eyes on a cell phone screen, it's time to reevaluate.

Why wont he publish his shows, or atleast tour europe ! Being a european Chapelle fan is very difficult !

It's gotta come sooner than later. Other than him doing Oddball comedy fest in 2013? And maybe some really low key shows that weren't advertised, this is the first time he's been in Chicago in a long time.

People who think he is stupid for doing something like this (cell phone pouches) don't know what they're talking about

I thought I saw somewhere in an article that the sleeves actually block out incoming/outgoing cellphone signals. Not entirely sure if that's true, but that would be a problem for many people I'm sure.

What does that have to do with anything? If the babysitter calls you can still leave and answer the call.

I'm still unclear on how you receive the call. And then I have to find an usher to unlock it and then get to a freedom zone. Sounds like a pain in the ass process to me. No thanks.

to be clear I have no issues with him doing it, as long as they refund people who didn't realize it and tell him to fuck off when they try to disable their phone.

So under normal circumstances you would answer the call in the theater and start talking?

I can see why a stand up comic would support this idea, more than other types of performance art. I've heard it said that one of the hardest things about comedy is that the only way to practice it is to perform it. Like, a musician can play alone, in an empty room, and learn their part. Comedy is different because you need to have an audience to know if a joke will land. So a lot of gigs aren't a comic performing, they're a comic practicing. I can empathize with not wanting their practice takes to be on the internet, before they perfect it.

I think it's kind of dumb, but it's his call I guess.

I just wouldn't want to put my phone into the same sleeve that others have used with their potentially dirty and porn filled phones.

No, I tell the babysitter to text me twice back to back if I am needed. The quick vibrations in succession alert me to check my phone. In theory, thankfully it's never happened.

they can easily make the sleeve see-through for the incoming call part of the screen. It's a start-up, so it's not a final thing yet. Regardless, what kind of emergency would be made to you and not 911 if it was really an emergency?

well that seems a little extreme for this particular application, but like I said, on a two-hour show where you agreed in advance to schedule it that way there is no likely emergency call that would be made to you. If you're unlucky to have one, then you're just the unlucky exception, not the statistical 99.9%.

I agree with this. But at the same time, I don't blame him for going this route because people don't want to leave their cells in their cars glovebox (that's a security issue as well, but we're going down a rabbit hole in potential information stealing ways) and record his shows when he doesn't want them to. It's the same as Vince Gillian asking people to stop throwing the pizzas they buy on "Walter Whites" house and they continue to do it anyway because it's oh so funny (not). People are just dicks.

From what the diagram appears, this bag "locks" in the venue (auditorium) and unlocks outside the venue/auditorium for you to be able to use your phone and the bag unlocks itself that way. There's no need for venue staff/"ushers" to lock/unlock the phone for you.

Not even close. The recordings are fucking with their business.

Then it's on him and the comedians to adapt to this new future where everyone has mini computers in their pockets rather than try and drag everyone kicking and screaming into the past.

I like this idea, but people aren't going to understand it, so it'll flop.

And people keep saying normal cameras and shit like that, but most people nowadays use their phones for everything. It's an ease of use kind of thing.

Or you know, you have kids.

People had kids in the 90's too and they managed just fine. This is a great idea, I went to see Silent Hill live and some asshole sat in front of me recorded the entire thing, his bright LCD blocking my view of the band.

... This is adapting. It's a free market, his show, and voluntary attendance. There's no dragging kicking and screaming. Chill.

Should movie theaters be ok with piracy just because video cameras exist?

I don't blame him either. Just saying personally I wouldn't put up with it.

Thanks for clearing that up, someone earlier in the thread said it required a manual lock/unlock. That makes it significantly less cumbersome, but no less a nope for me.

People had kids before cellphones. Even before pagers. Whoah
And?

Finally.
Had the luck of seeing one of his secret shows. First thing he says, no pictures,no recording. Ten minutes in, some asshole wants to take a picture. Fuckers can't control themselves. Then just say "sorry" . there's a line crossed. Either people are morons with their cellphones or they don't give a shit to a person's request.

And it's his material. If he wanted it recorded, he would get a stage and have it recorded himself , not needing help from some ass blogger looking for cheap hits.

Then comes the fact that it's poisoning his set. Not everything he say will be funny, but as usual, there's some ass recording shit trying to make a dollar off of something he didn't feel like sharing to EVERYONE.

I hope so. I think it's a good idea. Not gonna watch his material in potato quality anyway. It's just a damn shame that's the only way to watch it.

Being a Chapelle fan in general is very difficult.

Yeah. Comeawn ! Release some of them shows !

I saw when he was "recently" on some late night shows, and he still got it. He just needs to talk and everyone starts laughing. Amazing comedian.

[sad trombone noise] when you buy a ticket, you agree to this disclaimer that is posted at the top of the page

NO CELL PHONES ALLOWED, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE. ALL GUESTS WILL BE ASKED TO LEAVE THEIR CELL PHONES IN THEIR VEHICLES OR CHECK THEM AT THE VENUE.

No one gives a fuck that you want to record part of the show. Leave that shit at home/in your car

I vaguely remember getting excited about him taping a show that is suppose to be released as a special on HBO a few months ago. Have faith my friend

This is a poor way to adapt and won't work imo. All it will do is cause less people to go out to shows. The cat is out of the bag. People are on their phones 24/7 these days. At dinner. At functions. At bars. On dates. You might think it's dumb (I do too) but it's the way of the world. Telling people that in order to come to a show, you have to stick your phone into this sleeve that locks you out from accessing this thing that you base your life around whenever you want is just going to cause people to laugh at you and go somewhere else.

I would argue that charging $60+ for a ticket to hear your workshop your rough material is bad for their brand as well. ;)

Well it's not usually 100 percent rough material.

It's sprinkled in.

Besides, that's the nature of comedy. You really can't practice in your closet. You need to test with a live audience.

why don't they just put up a bunch of bright IR LEDs on the stage. Cameras would pick it up, but the people wouldn't see it

How does the case lock? How strong is the lock? What if you leave the venue and their case technology sucks and the case doesn't unlock as planned? Will they have some kind of tech support at the venue to help out with support?

Unless these cases are perfect, this sounds like way too much of a hassle for the average person.

And yet Chappelle sold out every single one of his shows, while requiring people to check their phones or leave them in their cars....

When I lived in LA comedians would show up at comedy clubs and do unannounced sets. This allowed them to work on material, but without having the expectation that come with an expensive ticket.

I wish people had recorded more of Richard Pyror's stuff. There are a few bootlegs out there, or what sound like bootlegs, but not many.

get some go again
I got a crazy idea Dave, how about you get a couple of cameras, tape your stand up and sell them to Netflix or some shit. That way your fans don't have to go to extreme ways to get some content from you. You also get paid.

Call me for more info on this crazy idea.
how about people let comedians go on the road and make a living that way and test new material along the way. he'll tape his show and sell it once he is done touring.
