Mind explaining how it productive? Or why this discussion shouldn't be in it's own thread? The video was about a new video game character being introduced, who happens to be a strong non-stereotypical black woman. I'm surprised majority of this thread ignored that and found something to be offended by.
What I gathered from this "productive" thread was that white people aren't allowed to voice black characters, but no one cares if they voice other minorities (i.g Delsin from Infamous Second Son). In fact, I don't remember a single post mentioning anything about Troy Baker voicing a Native American character, which is pretty amazing because Troy Baker's name was constantly in those threads.
I just don't understand why people are so selective with their complaining. Why is the trigger easily pulled for anything including Black vs White, and not Asians/Native Americans/Hispanics/etc? Why should a voice actor/actress suddenly be limited to voicing characters within their background/race?
I think the answer to that would end up being....quite disturbing tbh.
.......
The truth of the manner is, black people are always the sacrificial lamb when it comes to manners of racism, more than any other group, and that isn't fair to anybody. It helps create a false narrative that black people as a whole are more hyper-sensitive about racism than other groups and other minorities register no emotions toward discrimination they may feel, which is just inaccurate on both fronts. Or another way to see it: that black people are too weak-minded to see things on terms other than race. Which we know is false b/c at least a few black posters here have said this whole thing is a non-issue for them.
I understand the historical context of things, the very real issue of lack of black minorities in the industry, etc., but it's equally foolish to pin all of that, or even most of it, on racism. No one knows the particularities of how this casting decision went down, and in doing so are conflating it with events much different than itself (the Exodus shit show fiasco, for example). Anything to try and prove a point, but it's borderline parody by now.
It's almost startling close to treating black people like children; a sort of over-reactionary/over-protective nature forming either from internal white guilt, a need to appear "progressive" or actually wanting to inflict reputable harm to those they apparently want to help. Could be any of those.
I
will be fair in saying, however, that some others just genuinely seem wanting to bring up attention to a larger issue (which industry-wide,
is a problem), but it's odd seeing them piggyback off of ND and Sony, of all AAA companies, about that. Why not EA? Why not Ubi? Why not Nintendo*? I'd say they're a bit worst at diversity of black people in positions of their company, or representation of black people in their games. It just seems to be popular to rake ND through the coals nowadays.
I mean, it should be telling when the
Youtube comments are more focused on the content in the trailer (on average) than a GAF thread !!
