I actually work for Pluralsight. I gotta say as someone who spends a lot of his time on GAF it was surreal seeing the name drop in this thread. Worlds are colliding!

So can you tell us whether we should use Udemy or Pluralsight?

I bought this one during this sale. I haven't started it yet (I'll sit down with it this week) but just browsing through and watching some of the lessons it looks really in-depth. I've been working on learning Game Maker recently and this certainly looks to go into better detail then most tutorial videos out there.

These courses offer a 30 day money back guarantee if you're not happy with them so at $10 if you can afford it, it seems like a pretty good course.

I'll hit you back up again via PM and ask. SO for now I'll buy it.

Pluralsight is legit but it's indepth as hell.

Depending on your skill level, I'd recommend it. If you're just starting out, I'd do something lighter to get the momentum started.

Unity or Unreal for a new person to make a 2d side scroller like contra or something similar? Google points me toward Unity but there are some videos showing unreal being used for 2d.

Unity might be easier, but get this dude: it doesn't matter at all. Flip a coin if you must. Pick one and run the fuck with it.

Thank you for posting this, been meaning to learn programming but it's so overwhelming to know where to start...this is gonna get me on the track. Can't wait!

So which one of you is going to make the Champions of Norrath/Xmen Legends/Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance successor I've been waiting for for 12 years? Anybody?!?!

It does seem like a massive project for one person or a small team though otherwise I'd be tempted to make it my damn self. Long sprawling loot driven hack and slash RPGs don't really seem viable for a small dev team. Unless I am just completely off base with the time investment required to make all the necessary assets for such a project?

It's never gonna happen is it? T_T

Oh and cheers for the tip OP. I snagged some courses for Python and Arabic.

I have been doing a Gamemaker tutorial on Youtube in my spare time recently, I just finished the 10th ~20 minute video out of 20 for making a really vasic RPG. I am a complete beginner with coding and it's really fun learning new stuff. If I'm still in the beginning process of learning Gamemaker, would simultaneously doing this class throw me off?

It depends. If you want to keep using Gamemaker, then I wouldn't recommend this unity class. If you want to learn a different game engine, then sure.

Basically, you should be making a game with whatever you have at your disposal.

Gracias. I may just buy this to have in the future and focus on gamemaker for the time being.

These are the classes I purchased. I only have gotten 6% done in the Unity course. I was given a reference list about learning C and Java, so I took the time to look at my options in complimentary subjects/topics.

YouTube has quite a bit of tutorials and then there's a lot of databases out there that can help.

Kotaku and Joystiq use to offer those mobile app classes as a sale going on at times. It seemed like a great deal, so I got them at a good price.

Supposedly PluralSight has a better reputation for software dev courses than Udemy, however I don't know if it has a similar Unity course (I've definitely seen Unity stuff on there however)

You can get a free 6 month trial of everything they have by signing in to this Microsoft page

https://www.visualstudio.com/en-us/products/visual-studio-dev-essentials-vs.aspx

started my trial yesterday but not gone through any of the course materials yet

Quoting this to save people $10+

This is a way better deal.

Skimming over the course I already know everything in it, but the fact that it actually has you build a few complete games at the end makes it easily worth $10. I'll get it just for that.

I've bought a bunch of Udemy courses over the past year and from the ones I've actually taken (there's only so much time in the day for everything) I can definitely recommend the following:

Pixel art for Video games
Master Web Design in Photoshop
The Complete Node JS Developer Course
AngularJS JumpStart with Dan Wahlin
User Experience Design Fundamentals

These ones taught me some great stuff.

Thinking of picking up the pixel art class and the Unity class op suggested.

For anyone else that has/is taken these sorts of classes, do you guys feel it's worth the time? Would really just like something to give me that kickstart to get the ball rolling.

So for Web development what course should I go for

1. Web development bootcamp
Or
2. Ultimate Web designer and developer course?

Also two courses for ccna

There are so many coursed that I want to take note I am confused

Can anyone make a list of the best courses in Udemy? Partially all aspects of game design, from engine to modelling to programming, etc?

I would love to see what Udemy has to offer. Already bought the course mentioned in OP so thanks for that!

I think the dude was joking.

Just take the class. Jesus, if it's this easy to talk yourself out of spending 10 bucks to learn something new because you have your own notion on something, then I dunno lol.

I was more worried about spending time starting something I could have known from the beginning I'm unable to finish than I was about the $10.

Since they now have/are digital tutors they do have quite a few good unity courses. The issue is that some are c# and some are not. So unless you have the time to deal with both c# and Java it limits you a bit. I'm with them, but haven't been on in 3 months, but no matter how many tutorials they have the more games you make the easier it gets. So any tutorials that teach you something are worthwhile. Congrats though, digital tutors is great but before long you'll be fast forwarding everything as their tutorials can be a little slow.

I'm taking this course right now, it's really good. I've been writing JavaScript for 8 years now so sometimes it feels a little slow, and sometimes you get to something like an explanation of Singletons and you waste 15 minutes on the net looking for the actual Right Way because there's no way in hell this is it. And then it turns out it's as good as. Funny language.

Edit Oh yeah the entire reason I replied was I went to buy this course because it was on sale for $30, and I was 30 minutes too late and it went back up to $130ish. I ended up buying it at $8, and I've seen two more offers since. So don't feel like you absolutely have to jump on it now or you've missed out if the deal ends. It will be on offer again.

For £9 I figured I might as well give this a go.
Almost bought a few others in the sale as well (3DS Max, Maya, Android)...but figured I should see how this goes first.

Will these tutorials still be good in 10-15 months from now on or are they heavily outdated then, because they are using specific versions of Unity/UE etc.? Not the time at the moment to get really behind this but I should have in a year or so.

I think I might give this a go. I don't know if I'll ever take a closer look into game development, but having some knowledge in unity and c# can't be bad at all.

Is c# widely used or is it better to learn something more universal?

The Unity course has had a lot of updates to 5, though some of it is still in 4.6 (not practically a massive deal)

Thanks OP. My 15 year old Son wants to get into the gaming industry when he leaves school so this looks like it might be perfect for him. He has no experience other than, I think it's called Scratch?

Someone in the ot thread of this same topic said the website is filled with pirated material because there is no verification of authors is this even remotely true?

So can you tell us whether we should use Udemy or Pluralsight?

I mean yeah I could tell you... Pluralsight is the obvious choice :p

Honestly though it depends on what you're looking for. Pluralsight can get REALLY in-depth, for people who want to continue learning life long after they are already a professional. We have some beginner courses, but we're known more for the "hardcore" courses/learning. I'm not entirely sure how Udemy works, but it looks like its an open marketplace where anyone can upload courses so I'm not sure how good the quality control could be. That and the fact that we found some of our courses pirated and being sold there with our logo still on it rubs me the wrong way.

Not sure if anyone has heard of Digital-Tutors, but we just finished consolidating their 2000+ course library into our platform and it there are tons of "creative" courses. Game Design, Video, 3-D Modeling, etc.

Anyway not trying to get sales pitchy, it's just really cool to see the awesome company I work for pop up on my favorite forum. :)

for $10 im in. its an impulse buy at that price and will be a good way to sample unity.

I did notice the lesson page doesn't load correctly with IE though. Oh well ill probably dig into this in a week or two.

I can personally say that we've had a number of our Pluralsight courses published on Udemy.

http://thenextweb.com/insider/2015/...-pluralsight-and-still-hasnt-removed-it/#gref

However being an "open marketplace" as they are, its not like Udemy are stealing courses from us directly and publishing them as a nefarious plan. But it shows that users are pirating our content, slightly changing parts of it (but leaving our watermark on it!) and uploading/selling it without getting noticed by whatever QA controls there are.
