NeoGAF's struggle with the meaning of "minimalism"

No bloated action. No distracting background or scenery. No edgy monsters crawling everywhere. Just our hero standing calm, reflecting on his mission ahead and ready to kick ass. You can just see the determination on his face in the visor.

At some point you can only count ones that have nothing but the logo which is quite boring.

I really love how the FF covers do it. For me, it means just the logo and maybe one striking image, i.e. FSR's backdrop or the Demi-Fiend's close up.

Not true at all, those elements need to be used in creative ways such as the Resistance 3 or Resident Evil 4 covers.

Speaking of which:

Always vastly preferred these over the butt ugly US covers. Though the mansion entrance shot on RE1's box is still better than this fairly unspectacular image of blood spatter.

It wasn't actually Olly Moss, but they did rip off his style. He wrote about it somewhere, saying that he was a fan of the series and would have just done an original one if they'd asked.

Oh, lame. I really thought it was him. Oh well, it's still really sweet art.

I really love the EarthBound / Mother series's japanese box arts. Very classy.

Look at how well that manual and cartridge complement the box! Hngh.

A couple of standouts:

I especially like the restraint on the spine and back of the GT4 one. It's easy to make a minimalist cover and then bog down the other parts with the same ol' design excesses.

PAL Final Fantasy for sure, the american ones are terrible.

And yeah, half the covers in this thread are not minimalistic at all lol.

I was thinking this same thing. Minimalist does not mean "lots going on but a limited color pallet".

I was thinking the same thing. Clearly people don't know what the hell they're talking about when someone says minimalist box art.

It's also clearly not what the OP was asking for if you look at the examples provided. A better choice would've been "minimalistic" box arts to remove the shackles of this very specific art term.
