XCOM 2 |OT| Be Aggressive! Be Be Aggressive!

Almost soloed like half of the map with last sniper alive but then the last enemy mindcontrols him. FUCK. He was my best soldier too.

Had his dog run over by Blizzard's CEO
I wish I had recorded the complete bullshit I get in some of the missions, my hit chance for this one mission had to have been like 20% at most.

Wow, enemy just hit my guy through 2 walls, lol.

need a mod that strips out all the pre and post battle cutscenes. I don't need to see my soldiers leaving and returning. Just load into the map and let me play the game.

The overly long comm chatter during rescue missions, or the dumb pauses after actions. Everything slows the meat of the game down considerably.

surely bladestorm is not supposed to go off when you get bound by a snek. makes very little sense.

ah she's running around in permanent bound animation now. coolskies.

I've taken to spamming right click. It appears to skip anything that doesn't seem to be a disguise for loading times.

Much to my chagrin I found it auto-cancels the "Begin Mission/Return" dialogue. Oops.

Yeah, this is probably my biggest complaint with the game. Turning off the action camera helps a bit, but there's still so damned many dead spots where you're just waiting on the game to get going.

As for base leaving/returning, I think that's mostly a smoke screen to hide loading times.

New retaliation mission is crashing on me now. I load it, makes it to the screen, game crashes, tries to restart, then error 41.

I don't want to play it a third time, and I've had no problems until now.

Help? I googled error 41, but I doubt my antivirus is causing this issue.

Finished
the first Avenger mission
where you destroy the Alien EMP.

This game, despite slowdowns in some really specific areas, is soo fun and a lot more challenging at this point.

Rangers with Blademaster are the absolute best.

Running around cutting down
Mechs and Sectoids
with ease is so satisfying.
Sectoids
are so fun to cut down, since you take down all their health in one slice so that you can
kill all the reanimated zombies and save mind-controlled squad members.

Also it seems
Vipers
are extremely under-powered. Just by having a flashbang you can effectively disable them and still
let your squad member have a turn.

I'm liking it so far, but there are plenty of animation glitches, massive frame drops where you wouldn't expect it, and it's disappointing to see soldiers still stick their guns through brick walls and take unlikely shots.

Not sure I really understand the Avatar thingie either.

I made my dude, no idea how to send it in.

I guess I have to keep the awesomeness of Falk "Falk" Falk to myself.

Oh and yeah, my i7 and stoutly overclocked 980ti is getting hammered by this game...in the base area o_O? Luckily gsync takes care of a lot of my problems with unstable fps, but man lol >.> this is with shadows on high and using fxaa

I don't really care much because this is xcom after all and not doom or something, but still kind of crazy.

Don't. GAF-COM must be as awesome as possible:

-----

How to join GAF-COM:

  • Create your character using the Character Pool -> Create Character tools in the Main Menu.
  • Export your character, selecting it and using Export Selection. Create a new Character Pool with your GAF name, and select it, appearing a confirmation message. This should create a 3-4KB .bin file with that name at "Documents\My Games\XCOM2\XComGame\CharacterPool\Importable"
  • Send that file to the email address you'll see here --> <-- when quoting this message, including in the email the next information:
    GAF username:
    Full character name:
How to use the Pool:

The address is hidden in EMAIL tags tho, for spambots and to keep it only for Gaffers.

This game is freaking brutal. Getting my ass kicked on the second mission. Glad to see I miss all my 70% shots, but the AI is 95% accurate.

Is training psi-soldiers worth it? I'm already struggling to get enough facility space for everything I need. I'm up to +400 supply per month, and next weapon tier is already ~10 to 15 days away. All of my supply is spent on necessary things like weapons, armor, facilities and different soldier / item upgrades.

So how do I get my soldiers to be able to have attacks only graze them? Seems fairly unfair if only the aliens can have attack graze them for like 1/3 the dmg they would have gotten otherwise

Dodge stat from armor or PCS.

And yeah this game is crazy janky. It's bizarre coming from Firaxis. It's just a general feeling that the whole thing is held together by duct-tape, and so many concepts (especially the entire Geoscape) that are very poorly explained, and interface elements that should be dead simple that still confused me for hours, like the hacking interface.

That said I'm completely enthralled by it. The meat of the game is just incredibly good.

This game is friggin awesome.

So much more aggressive than the first game though, I'm hauling ass most of the time to get from one side to the other.

It's better though I guess, much snappier and you have to think a lot more about your turns.

Building the prerequisites for the psi-soldiers just seems like a pointless distraction that will only slow me down?

Psi Soldiers are amazing. I have a max level Psi Operative with the top level Psi Amp, and she has a 70% chance to permanently Mind Control any Gatekeeper, and a 90% chance to Mind Control Andromedons and everything else that isn't a MEC or Sectopod. Seriously I bring one on every mission just for Gatekeepers.

They also get Inspire to give a squad member an extra turn and Insanity which gives gives a random debuff (including potentially Mind Control) and can be upgraded to give Rupture, which makes an enemy more susceptible to damage. You can use Fuse to blow up any enemy's explosives, even if they're mechanical, or dead. Null Lance is deadly as hell, and I'm just now training them to get Void Rift.

I think on my next playthrough I'm going to go for the Psi Lab a lot earlier and see how viable that is.

Dodge stat. Which I think might be abusable as you get get 56% dodge pretty easily later on. Might be able to push that to near 70.

Spend two turns creating the perfect ambush.
Grenadier kills the entire pod with a single grenade.

Grenadiers with explosive talents are so good it's a little crazy. They are the one class I can't imagine doing without.

Got a bunch of stuff I need to build and upgrade now before I even think of attempting more story

This game makes me feel so stupid. Played hundreds of hours of both X-Com and XCOM and yet I have no clue what I'm supposed to do in the campaign.

Shit keeps popping up everywhere, I fly there, "scan" or whatever, and it feels like I'm hardly doing anything (in terms of the geosphere but also in regards to research and developing soldiers).

Meanwhile, that
Avatar
thing is almost complete so I feel like I probably should attack that
Black Site
now the game keeps telling me about. Well. I wasn't even remotely prepared for that.

Guess it's time to consult a guide and figure out what to do on the map screen, lol.

You get resources/scan stuff. Sometimes you get a guerrilla mission as an opportunity arises and tbh you shouldnt wait too long to start to attack the Blacksite..atleast imo. OFC you can play so that you get the 20d timer.

Is there anyway to fix these audio issues:

-no soldier VO
-no tutorial VO

I sorta fixed the soldier VO by switching audio sources, but the tutorial VO remains silent.

Speaking of the tutorial, it's extremely sluggish. Sometimes it takes almost 2 minutes before I can issue an order.

My system is more than capable. I even got game up to 60fps.

Thanks for the answers about the graze mechanic.

Another question, does using explosives have an impact on what you can retrieve from a mission? in the first one it would destroy equipment if iirc.

Thanks. Think I mostly have to figure out what kind of progress the game is expecting from me at what point. All the resources / scanning stuff feels a bit distracting in that regard but I probably just need to get used to it. Constantly flying around just feels a little... weird.

From what I can tell, if you kill something with explosives that's carrying loot (like a Stock or Repeater), it destroys that equipment. Which is dumb because there's no way to tell if someone is carrying.

Yeah not sure who thought it was OK to have this.

My favorite part is how fucking far they can run and that they can melee attack elevated troops! I had a guy on top of a shanty house and the fucker destroyed the house causing my guy to fall to his death. What an asshole!

i'm finding this way more difficult than enemy unknown, like, i am losing 1-2 guys on basically every mission

Faceless being able to attack you on the turn that they're revealed is some bullshit. On par with cross country stun lancers.

I think they went a little too far to fix things, since if you played XCOM EW well, the melee enemies couldn't even survive to reach you most of the time.

I had the same issue. Apparently your game is missing audio filles.
Try verifying your game files. Downloaded two files for me and everything was fixed.

Quickly losing steam to finish the game. Late game is very, very annoying.

Rant:
- You run out of tech way early. There are very few grades of weapons, which was one of the main criticisms of the first game. We'll all be running around with plastic looking plasma weapons for most of the game. Why? Could we maybe have endgame weapons that don't look like alien dildos.

- Fly to a site, spend .1 seconds scanning it before getting interrupted. After happening a couple of dozen times I am very, very sick of the world map mechanics. At least let me pick up my start of the month supplies for one single time without some absolutely critical going down on the other side of the globe.

- I've stopped caring about customising my gear, since I'm not unlocking new stuff and the endgame weapons/armor look hundred times worse than the starting stuff. The armor designers are obviously Mass Effect fans. I'd love to equip the starting armors again, but since the wound system was designed by Satan that would just result in more frustration.

- Retaliation missions have become "Run through the Chrysilid minefield and hope you've spawned near enough civilians". But hey, at least the civilian AI has improved since...no, wait. They still stand still next the enemy, even after being shot at. I've failed my last 3 because there is no way you can sprint to the opposite end of the map while either fighting or avoiding the enemies. RNG at its finest.

- I'm installing the timer mod after I post this. Instead of having a reasonable timer system, where the timer is only present on missions where they'd make sense, and the timer only starts once detected, they have this static timer limit which doesn't scale as the game progresses.

- I don't even try and maintain the Avatar project anymore. I don't even get why it's there. You can't stop it. You can't keep up with the gains, even when hitting every event. The game never explains the Avatar tracker fully, and it advances seemingly without anything actually happening. The mechanics are so poorly explained and obfuscated because I doubt they want to player to see how bullshit it is.

- Andromedons are plain cheating. Hit one with a 14 damage attack while they're at 2 hp, and they only take 2 hp before going back to full hp.

I'm exactly where you're at man, I feel the pain and having less fun late game.

that moment when you discover that a wall full cover apparently doesn't exist and you can get shot by someone you can't see because the wall's on fire but didn't tell you but still blocks YOUR LoS

Is there an overall strategy for how to play this game? Like, not the nuts and bolts of moving your soldiers in the missions, but the actual choices of which missions to take, which areas to contact, which things to scan, which stuff to build and research?

I mean, I know the overall objective is to get to the Blacksite missions so you can move the Avatar Project meter down a notch, but those missions are really hard, even on the easiest difficulty.

I think they went a little too far to fix things, since if you played XCOM EW well, the melee enemies couldn't even survive to reach you most of the time.

They're bullshit right now. Not only can they attack before you even have a chance to prepare, their attacks have a decent range so they don't even need to get particularly near you, although they can still move across a large number of tiles.

Feel like such a scrub on this, made it onto my first actual mission and I'm just getting my ass handed to me every time. Mission requires me to extract all operatives and complete the objective, but it's fucking impossible to keep anyone alive when they go down in one shot. Also it takes half the turn counter to make it near the objective which causes me to get my operatives in poor positions.

What am I doing wrong?!

I dunno man, between Lawnmower Man specialists disabling everything in sight, crit-happy rangers that can stealth/scout and KILLZONE SNIPERS I dunno if I can do without any of the classes.

I guess I've played half a week without Psi Ops now though so maybe I can do without Psi Ops.

Skill trees are defo a lot more interesting than EU.

Did you play XCOM EU? Regardless, recommend watching some people play the game with commentary (Beaglerush as always) - the tactical layer is just about as complex as a roguelike in how all the little mechanics you may not even realize makes a difference, makes a difference.

Sorry to piggy back here but for those that do have Psi soldiers, how are they?

They seem to be pretty resource intensive to get a hold of and I'm wondering how the payoff is for that.

Oh that ain't right. They get a unit that heals automatically, teleports after taking damage, is immune to flashbangs and mind controls your soldiers and has a ton of dodge.

No I never played it myself but I've watched a friend and I get the general gist of it, just I'm really getting fucked over by the dice rolls it seems, missing most of my shots while the enemies can land shots through walls and floors from a mile away which is pissing me off. Game is really throwing me in the deep end, hope I can get through this as I'm enjoying it.

Not sure if you're doing anything wrong, the first missions are weirdly difficult. I could only get passed the third mission by save scumming through 7 attempts. It's been much easier after that.

Faceless being able to attack you on the turn that they're revealed is some bullshit. On par with cross country stun lancers.

Those things are actually making me consider waiting a bit now (played 7h), too see if they if they're gonna do a balance patch soon.

The game is great, but a bit unbalanced.
