That's not even remotely a good reason. Gen 7 with a GSC style revisit of Kalos and a postgame story ala Delta Episode for Zygarde is far more sensible.

Says you. B2/W2 are the best pokemon games GF has done for me. Doing an even bigger expansion would be worthy of bigger fanfare.

There's also a sales reason. New Names generates more inherent interest than a X2/Y2. You signify these games are a bigger deal than normal and generate more interest. It's a move GF would totally make.

A new gen is possible, but there is more evidence of bigger 6.5 gen.

Official and correct rankings:

1. R/S/E
2. D/P/P
3. R/B/Y
4. X/Y
5. B/W
6. G/S/C

I don't see any reason that it has to continue though.

Yep. Ever since Pokemon Yellow, there was only 1 3rd version and it was just an expansion pack. That is, until we got B2/W2 which were large sequel games. Game Freak changes things up whenever they want. New names aren't a point for or against a .5 update.

Its a staple of the franchise. Part of its identity. I mean if they wanna throw that away for the fuck of it I guess, but it's an iconic part of Pokémons legacy. Would be quite the waste

Pokemon Grey was a sure thing because of Legacy. Legacies change whenever the times dictate and B2/W2 were better for it.

Those were a part of a new gen. New gens always break compatibility in that way. ORAS has some limitations for trading due to some small form changes and stuff, but adding completely new pokemon would basically break compatibility in the same way you would a new gen. There is zero reason to do that for a .5 gen. You get very little benefit.
I mean seriously, if they do add new Pokémon in Sun/Moon it's going to be at least several dozen. They aren't going to just add 10 to 20; as you said, there's no real point. It's either going to be just a few special mons like Magiana or babby Zygarde, in which case breaking compatibility is inconsequential because they can just be like "you can't trade/battle with these few mons", or enough new ones that people have no problem with breaking compatibility since it's a fuckton of new mons they're getting to play with to the point where almost everybody's going to immediately transfer all their shit over anyways.

I don't even expect Magearna in these games. It'll be the Zygarde forms and some new megas as well as a whole region of Kalo. Either gyms shift around and Southern Kalos gets some of them, or it's a big postgame location or South Kalos gets its own league. I also expect it to have different pokemon, but just a mix of current generation stuff.

I could also see us visiting Hoenn again, because the assets are already done, but that'd be a pretty damn ambitious way to go.

It has still never changed. Ever. Mainline Pokémon Generations get new name subtitles and thats all

Holding onto old naming conventions just cause seems like a silly hill to die on. Who cares what the name is? It's the content that matters.

It's been said before in this thread, but if some people will buy two versions at a time, that creates an incentive for them to make 4 games a gen, not three.

And at the start of 2012 there had never. Ever. Been a time when there was no third version. Now there is.

Person in 2011: It has still never changed. Ever. 3rd games are never sequels and are always just expanded versions of the original games and that's all.

I mean its not like I'm going to boycott the game over it but its a fun part of its iconic history. Things like that are not easily earned and takes a long time to become "iconic". Just seems a strange thing to throw away

Also i'm sure its pretty much a universal want, but we need to run into an older Red at some point. I mean like an adult version of Red.

That "icon" must be worthless now.

I'll never get to buy a third version then :( When black and white came I decided not to play them since Platinum got so much praise, so for the first time I was going to wait. Then we got the 2 slapped on the cover and two versions. So I skipped that whole gen.

Sales reason? Once again fulfilled by a new gen and better at that as it's a fresh experience out of the gate.

I'm also still waiting for this grand reasoning people believe this is "gen 6.5". In actuality, I think some of you just can't come to terms that Kalos and 6th gen in general was mediocre for postgame.

You mean 6 versions. Remakes are probably here to stay.

You've got me there. I haven't kept up on Pokemon in many years. Feels like coming home.

I haven't played since Gen I so don't feel too bad.

A full gen would sell more, but also cost more to make because you'd have to generate a ton of new assets.

Putting new names on a .5 generation would likely both drive sales of those games higher while still being cheaper to make.

Gen VI is awesome, and I agree that the online is the best. But I despise how slow the process is to actually getting into a match! You have to confirm like 5 times before each match! Also we really should have random 6 VS 6 battles by now.

Looks like some people are holding out that these will be a Kalos 2.

That definitely sounds more interesting than a new generation. I've been saying for ages that GameFreak could get more mileage out of going deeper with the regions, characters, and Pokemon they already have. For the last like 4 generations they've been rebuilding all of these 'assets' just to serve the same functional purpose.

I just hope it ends up on NX as well. At this point I'm done with my 3DS and wii U sans smash bros, ready to move on. I plan to get back into pokemon quite a bit but I don't want to do it on 3DS.

This won;t be for NX. Pokemon in general won't be on NX until next year at the earliest. If this is Gen 7 I wouldn't expect an NX Pokemon (outside of spin-offs) until 2019.

GameFreak is late comers to new platforms. This will 100% be 3DS. Assuming this is gen 6.5 and not 7, I would not be shocked at all if those games next year are still 3DS or cross platform at best.

I think people are thinking more of a Johto/Kanto situation where the 7th gen takes place next to the Kalos region and you can travel between the two. Pokemon Moon and Pokemon Sun does in a sense remind me of Pokemon Gold, pokemon Silver and the cover legendaries also have similar thematic. Every Gen after Gen 2 has had red and blue thematic incorporated into their cover design.

Yeah, Sun and Moon gives me Ho Oh / Lugia vibes.

Works for me. I'll take anything over the old formula of 'start from scratch but make sure everything feels the same as last time'.

"Cheaper to make"? You really want to go there?

Masuda seemingly hasn't directed a mainline entry since XY. I'm pretty sure whatever time was used since then would probably point more towards a new generation than gen 6 on pokeyroids.

We have the final mythical Pokemon coded into titles starring in a movie with a new Pokemon as the co-star. We also have a 3 year gap between XY's reveal and now. Which history will show you, will indicate a generational transition, not "third version/BW2-esque sequels" with a naming scheme bearing NO RELEVANCE to previous 3DS titles. Even OR/AS had subtle callbacks to Xerneas and Yveltal in title; Life and Death, Beginning and End.

It's honestly mind boggling if it's anything but a new generation.
