Apple iPhone 6S |OT|

My iPhone 6+ keeps doing the auto shut off thing when it says I have about 10% battery.

Then I plug it in, and when it comes back alive it still says that I have about 10% battery.

Was there anything in the latest iOS update that changed the auto shut off stuff? Or what is happening to my iPhone 6+?

When photos, specifically Live Photos, are backed up to iCloud, can I then delete them from my phone? Doesn't seem like it. With Google Photos I can have it remove locally what it stored in the cloud, but Live Photos get flattened in Google Photos.

Either:
You're using the iPhone in a cold environment Or
You haven't recalibrated the battery in a while (fully charge to 100% then let completely discharge til it turns off and reboot) which Apple recommends to do about every six weeks Or
Your iPhone's battery is slowly failing. You've had it for over a year right?

Nope, iCloud is a copying service, so if you delete it from your phone it will also delete from there

Yeah had it over a year, I ordered my 6+ on the first day. Not using it in a cold environment. Don't really recalibrate my battery much. I thought this wasn't needed on the new phones? But I always charge to 100% before taking it off the charger. Last two power cycles it ran until it shut off at around 10% battery, then fully charged it.

What's your suggestion for backing up Live Photos so they don't lose their function?

EDIT: It looks like I can go to iCloud.com and set up the backup there - I did a test with a photo on my device and now that I have the .com set up, it looks like the photos stay. But I can't test the Live functionality because I don't plan on using a Mac.

Any app recommendations for storing gifs? Since they don't animate from the Photos app, I'm having a lot of trouble determining which stupid gif I need to drop into text messages.

Try Gifwrapped. iPhone/iPad selection app with the gifs backed up on your dropbox

I think you can add your own gifs to Gif Keyboard, along with searching their database

that would be the better suggestion if Apple's third party keyboard implementation wasn't still a pile of poop. Seriously iOS RAM management of third party keyboards driving me insane; it's still the worst, the main tech sites don't bother to mention or complain about it anymore instead just using the default keyboard and thus Apple doesn't seem to care about fixing it

I was reading about the GS7's Always On Feature and started thinking about the iPhone's rumored switch to OLED screens. To me there are a couple of reasons why Apple hasn't jumped into OLED screens just yet. One is obviously to find other suppliers so that they aren't tied down to Samsung. I also believe they're looking into fixing some of OLED's inherent weakness before doubling down on it: burn in. Now, the GS7's Always On feature shows the time, notifications, and other information all the time on the screen without having to unlock the phone. Because OLED screens inherently draws power only for "turned on" pixels, the feature only uses 0.5% of the battery every hour. This feature requires that the ticker move around every so often to avoid burn in. How does this relate back to the iPhone 8? With rumors that the iPhone will move to a no-bezel front screen and the integration of the home button and Touch ID under the screen, I believe (or maybe hoping) that the first OLED iPhone will have an always on feature. I personally hope that the home button does get integrated into the screen and have an always on "ring" that pulsates on every few moments when you have a notification. 3D Touch is another key technology that will enable the integration of the Home button.

Is there anyone using a data usage app? I'm thinking between DataMan, My Data Manager and Datawiz? Anyone using any of these?

That's the worst concept I've ever seen.

The back looks terrible with the centered camera. (The back camera is on the left for a reason) Shifting the front camera is so unlike Apple seeing as it's a FaceTime camera and should be centered.

You can't even see the camera in the top view. And the bevels are wasteful and would make it unusable and take up valuable battery space.

The screen is a bad Photoshop job. If the screen is going to be that close to the edge it might as well go all the way like some Android phones.

But smaller bezels on the top and bottom would be really nice.

I am finally considering an iPhone after avoiding getting a smartphone for the longest time. Should I wait for the 7 and is it all but confirmed for March? Also what data plan should I get? I probably won't use a lot so I am thinking medium should be suitable?

The iPhone 7 isn't coming out in March, the iPhone releasing in March is supposed to be a "Special Edition" version of the iPhone 5S that has updated internals. The iPhone 7 should release in September as usual.

When you say data plan do you already have a carrier in mind? If not telling us where you live can give an idea on which carrier would be best suited for your area.

My mistake, I live in the Central New Jersey area and was considering Verizon because I have and am very satisfied with their FiOS service.

As a first phone, can't go wrong with a "S" model. 5s or 6s or this 5SE that's rumoured. The S models are refined versions of the prior year models.

My friend used a hand me down 4s until last Fall (4+ years of use!), upped to a 5s, loves it too. The 4s was her first smartphone.

I also know two very non technology savvy 65 year olds that have been on a 5s for over a year and haven't called me once for tech help. That's got to be a good sign!

My phone has been unable to complete an iCloud backup since the 18th.
Plenty of storage space, it just always fails even when I manually tell it to backup.

Don't know what to do. :(

Have you tried signing out of iCloud and signing back in? That has always fixed it the few times over the years that my iPhones stopped backing up.

I will give it a shot.
The only things I've done so far are turn the backup on and off, and deleting the existing one from the cloud.

I actually find myself pretty underwhelmed with the camera on my 6s Plus. Any time I zoom in, especially in low light photos, everything looks like a blotchy mess. I actually thought something was wrong with my camera, but I compared it to a friend's and same thing

First time I've been disappointed in an iPhone camera. Even though I know it's technically better than previous ones, I guess my expectations were too high
Yep, the 6s cam has been a total disappointment for me as well.

Smartphone cameras in general have been underwhelming the past two or three years. We're playing with number and size of pixels but there have been few novel technologies. I hope the LinX acquisition turns into an iPhone camera improvement.

FaceTime camera is already nit centered on current iPhones. It was originally centered but moved.

I'd take it to an Apple Store, but it wouldn't surprise me if you're looking at a clean restore.

I assume you've already done a hard reboot?

Yeah I have.
And now I see lots of people with the same problem in this thread: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/7377685?start=180&tstart=0

Many there did full restores but it still gave them the error.
Seems like most got it working randomly after time had passed. I may just stick to PC backups for now like the old days.

Edit: Damnit! Now my Air 2 is doing the same thing. It was backing up fine yesterday.

recommendations for a to-do list/daily reminders app that'll sync between iphone and pc? I'd like to be able to add things on iphone and see them out and about, but I spend a lot of time on the PC so having them visible there is important.

Have onenote but it isn't great for me for simple things like to-dos - too much overhead

I have verizon and love the service. I can only imagine how much better it is since you live in the city of its headquarters.

You can't go wrong with just about any iPhone at this point of the game. With the 7, you will get a refresh with design but practically the same specs as the 6s. You can search the Internet of what cycle you want to be on (whole number or S) but after using an iPhone for over 3.5 years, I'm satisfied to be locked on the S cycle. It's more polished hardware, we usually get the best in software and optics upgrades and threads to be more future proofed for the long run. You waited this long to get a smart phone, might as well go the ditamce with this investment.

Check out Evernote and wunderlist. My favorite reminders app is Alarmed, but I don't think it has desktop support.

I use Evernote every day but haven't messed with the reminders function much.

So I dropped my iPhone 6 today and bent the casing around the volume button. Now the down volume button doesn't work. How much would it cost to fix something like this if I took it to an Apple Store. I'm sure it's beyond warranty.

Edit: ok, I went to the Apple Store. the answer is $300. How insane.

To be fair they'll probably have to replace the phone if the casing is badly damaged like that, and $300 isn't bad for a replacement.

$300 to replace the whole phone, yeah. When it's bent, it's bent

Yeah, that seems right. I thought they could just bend it back into place. I feel like I could probably bend it back into place. It's a really small dent that puts pressure on the button, I'm guessing.

they'll definitely replace the phone.

$300 for a new iPhone after dropping and breaking one? so awful!

heh. oh, sorry.

jts

...hate me...
Yeah well $300 may not seem bad for a brand new (refurb) iPhone but you're also giving in your old phone which 100% will get refurbished as well and later given out or sold as a replacement phone.

In the end it does boil down to $300 to fix a small case dent that obstructs the volume button. It's gotta sting.

Blessed 7000 series aluminum.

Today I handed back in my old iPhone 5S as it was a company device and bought myself a cheapo, abttered iPhone 5.

Have to admit I'm pretty much entirely out of the news loop for iphones, is there a new device drop coming or am I "safe" to get a 6S?

Fuck this shit!!

Automatic iCloud backup hasn't backed up for 4 days - and I've done NOTHING different to the iPhone.

50GB plan, the backups are only 10GB. I don't backup my photo library. Shit don't make any sense.

Try some of this stuff:

The app data thing was one I didn't know about.

I feel like that happened to me once....but for the life of my I can't recall what I may have done to fix it. Honestly I probably just backed up the photos and videos manually on my computer and did a fresh reset.

Thanks for all of that.

I restarted the iPhone and tried again with a manual backup. This time I set the Auto-Lock to 'Never' so I could keep an eye on it's progress and it backed up fine. I've no idea what broke the backup process and why a simple restart of the 6S made it start working again.

Does anyone know some common fixes out there for slow wifi speeds for the 6S, this is really weird, for reference my actual speed is 50 Down/ 25 Up.

Optimum Online/Cablevision is the ISP.

is it a combo modem/router? Are the 'actual speeds' what you are getting when wired in? Do you know what kind of wireless the modem and/or router has?

Thanks for all of that.

Glad to hear it. When in doubt, a reboot never hurts. :)

It's an Arris modem connected to a Netgear router. The speeds are from my desktop computer on Wifi, when you say what kind do you mean the Ghz? If so the router is 2.4.
