speaking of his guitar playing, did he actually play the guitar during his super bowl halftime show, or was it playback? at times it sounded like the guitar kept playing when he wasn't even touching it. pretty sure even he wasn't that good.

To my knowledge, Prince never mimed playing instruments in his 40 year career.

Yeah, Prince was the very definition of a multi-instrumentalist.
I honestly used to just think he was a singer when I was, like, 12; the Little Red Corvette music video kind of helped cement that impression of him for me, mostly because he only sung and danced in it.

Fuck all these summer blockbusters, I just found out they are playing Purple Rain at AMC 24 in Hampton. I'm there.

I just watched "Purple Rain" again for the first time in ages and it's seriously one of the coolest yet campiest things I've ever seen.
Like, that scene where Morris orders Jerome to throw some random lady in the trash had me rollin'; it was so mean and unexpected. lol
I'd love to see it on the big screen.

Yeah I think the guitarist was some Japanese dude in a 80s metal Rising Sun T-shirt or something.

lol
Nah that was Dez Dickerson, a black guitarist from Minneapolis who just happened to be wearing a japanese rising sun shirt.
He was the one singing "Modernaire" in Purple Rain; you can also hear him really clearly in Little Red Corvette (specifically on the "You must be a limosine!" part)

cliched answer but just get Purple Rain and then go back to his first album and go chronologically through his discog from there.

Thanks mate I know it seems weird to discover an artist after his death but my music tastes changed a lot from my youth etc and I always wanted to dip in to prince but didn't know best place to start

Oh man. Just had to leave the room. Was watching Prince on the TV sing Purple Rain and my 3 year old daughter started singing "purple rain, purple rain". Losing it now.

Nah, it's just an internet meme. I believe the actual quote has Clapton pointing people towards Rory Gallagher.

Kinda like how every libertarian sentiment in the last 15 years has been attributed to George Carlin even though he almost never said any of that shit.

Thank you.

And yeah, I am sick of all the shit being attributed to Carlin that isn't him. There was one in particular that seemed very, very NOT Carlin, but I can't remember what it was.

Still devastated.

I wonder how long the Youtube free for all will continue? I hope they leave it all there. More people need to discover or rediscover Prince - it's just a shame that this had to be the cause.

Now, here's the best version of Purple Rain, from Milan in 2010. If you don't shed a tear during the solo, when he's clearly channelling some sort of otherworldly guitar god, well, there's not much I can do for you.

RIP

My sister got married yesterday and played two Prince songs for people to get down to. Those were the only two songs that all 50+ got up to dance to. It was pretty awesome to see everyone so excited to dance to his music.

RIP Prince.

The origin of the quote is actually Jimi Hendrix being asked that question on a talk show, and he answered this with the name of the guitar player on that talk show. The fake Rory Gallagher one got a life of its own though, and I absolutely love Rory.

I have the 1985 concert from Syracuse. That is the definitive version. Every other version pales. 18+ mins. Long intro with Wendy on guitar. Then prince with the tan strat. Then more Wendy. Then prince with his signature guitar. The solo at the end is other worldly. 6 mins of brilliance

Prince was legit amazing on all instruments but the only people I've seen who really think he was the greatest ever guitar player seem to:

1. Not play guitar themselves

2. Never have heard of Clapton, Hendrix, SRV, Segovia, etc.

I both play guitar and have heard all of those guys you mentioned

prince is one of the greatest guitar players of all time

he's in that top tier being one of the very few who could make his guitar do whatever the fuck he wanted

Prince is easily on the same level as those guys. Greatest guitar player is a silly title as people have different opinions on what makes someone great. Malmsteen can sweep his heart out but I would rather hear a prince solo for example. Dude knew what to play and when.

I honestly find it kind of insulting that he included clapton in that list but that's just me haha

dude shouldn't ever be mentioned in the same sentence as prince. dude peaked with the bluesbreakers and cream.

This isn't even a case of "OMG, this guy died so let's glorify him!". We had this same argument in a Prince thread last year. Dude was one of the best to ever strap on a guitar then and he still is now.

Agreed, been nice to see the trickle of tracks and even though it's probably not what he'd want I hope it lasts.

Couple of (lesser known?) favorites from his later output:

If Eye Was The Man In Ur Life

Black Sweat

Future Baby Mama

1000 X's and O's

Once U Know from Art Official Age gets an upload that'd be up there as well.

I remember watching MTV ALOT when I was a young teenager. Like constantly back when they used to show videos.

I recall seeing the videos for 'Get Off" and "Cream" and my mom walking to my room.

'What in the world are you watching!"

Lol, good memories.

Man, I know you didn't mean to come off this way, but I've seen this sentiment before and it comes off as not only ignorant, but also condescending.

I love all of the artists you mentioned (and honestly, Clapton doesn't deserve to be in the conversation), but what makes Prince unique is the fact that he could shred with these guys but simply chose not to very often. He could never be pegged down to one genre, and he could play every instrument with a rare proficiency. If he wanted to be a guitar God and do only that, he certainly could have- But his desire for creating his own brand of music never tied him down. How many artists can say that?

Yeah, it's sad that that's a pretty common reaction.
It makes sense though considering how black people's contributions to guitar-driven genres are generally ignored or trivialized.

The annoying thing is...you can easily tell how good he is if you just listen to something as early as "Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad?" or "Bambi".

Edit: lol zero_suit, yeah you're right; I actually felt guilty leaving out "Bambi".

Inside a lot of musician circles, his contributions weren't considered trivial at all.

I read an interview with Clapton some years ago where he was asked how it was like being the worlds best guitar player, and he replied "You have to ask Prince"

you dont even have to play guitar to know he's better than clapton

Are you a guitarist? Jesus, these comparison games get old. Prince was not the most proficient, and neither was Clapton. But both of them bring a flavor that I'm damn glad to have tasted. There's always a guitarist that can do something another one can't, but at the end of the day I'm more worried about their contributions and songs than how fast they sweep arpeggios or how many notes per second they play.

Edit: Whether you play or not wasn't my point. A lot of guitarists bring a mentality to playing that is absolutely counterproductive.:)

Now that this news has had a few days to sink in it's really starting to hurt knowing one of the biggest parts of my childhood and adulthood is gone.

Never thought I'd be doing avatar tributes to Bowie and Prince in the same year.

Sucks.

Music professor grew up in Minnesota, started talking about Prince and played the Purple Reign intro in class. He started crying and so did everyone else.

While the impulse to analyze and rank things has certainly served us well, every goddamn thing under the sun doesn't need to be slotted into a list!
