I've been following the game's development for years, and one of the coolest things about that is seeing how those awesome creatures with all those fluid animations and art basically start as boxes and circles


Oh, and found this cool scene from 2014 that shows off the interaction between you and different lizard types pretty well

So are there other places that are more up to date? I'm not a backer but I checked the KS page and the last update was in December. It seems like they're still hard at work on it though.

Edit: Oh I see their Twitter is alive and well. Cool.

I need this game in my veins.

It looks so damn creepy yet epic, depending on if slugcat can make friends. So I seen a blue headed lizard trying to run from white headed lizards trying to eat it, if you saved the blue headed lizard, will it not be a dick to you? Or will it be ungrateful and still try to eat you?

Getting this on Steam.

Edit: Can you still get Alpha gameplay at all? I'm really wanting to try this. But I might just have to wait for when it eventually comes out which I hope is soon.

The available alpha is quite old, at least a year, only a few regions, no music or sound effects, less advanced AI and only a few species. But the animations, basic movement, basic combat and interactions are all there, and you can tweak the txt file if you want to, say, set up a lizard battle royale or flood a pool with 500 leeches

The OST will be the 10 layers that act as the dynamic music, plus 130 regular tracks

As for the other question, yeah that's the idea the dev is going for with the AI. They have personalities and they remember, and not just the lizards

So I bought the humble bundle preorder and now I have the Rain World alpha. Neat! Except here's a big problem:

They show a goddamn X-Box controller and its commands, so I have to basically figure out the controls on my own, in a limited amount of time before the rain comes. Why the hell is this? I'm basically just randomly typing keys and see what they do. Is there anywhere that has a keyboard control layout I can look at so I can actually see how to move around? Also going from sneak mode to regular running mode feels super goddamn clunky on a keyboard, so I'm not surprised a controller is recommended. Especially if you enter each new area automatically in "stealth" mode.

I was pressing space to jump, I'll experiment a little bit. I was doing a bit of keyboard rolling and accidentally got a command prompt to show up and I was able to select various enemies. Not sure how to work it. Thanks for the info.

If you want to mess around, you can go find the txt file in the game folder, and can tweak things. How long the rain cycle is, which room you start in, spawn spears and rocks and different species. The room names/pics are in another subfolder.

Your moveset is quite versatile, but I don't remember if that alpha has the additional moves. Main one: if you hold down for a sec or two, you notice the slugcat kind of tense up in its crouched position. Then you can lunge in that direction. Lets you make extra far leaps

Thanks a bunch! Being able to pick up and throw objects was one I needed to know, which thankfully I managed to figure out. This Alpha does tell me though that I need to make sure I have a compatible controller when the game launchers proper.

Was browsing through the TIGSource devlog, and it's always impressive to see how much the game has improved yet how close the game is to the dev's original vision

Yeah, I certainly hope they improved the gameplay. In the alpha anyway it's actually making me regret my purchase. There's simply no way to effectively fight off the lizards without access to multiple spears, especially in cramped environments when you can't easily out maneuver them. If they decide to camp a pipe entrance to where your bats are they can effectively block progress. Don't leave the area? Starve to death. Take the pipe to go find bats? Instantly pop out of the pipe into a lizard's mouth and die instantly.

Incredibly frustrating. Thankfully I've seen the dev posts about them lightening up on the game difficulty, at least as far as the lizards are concerned, and they won't be as hyper aggressive or persistent.

Also in the Alpha if a pink lizard grabs you, you don't instantly die, but you can't escape its jaws either. So you either just watch your slugcat get carried off until another colored lizard decides to show up and have a go at you and actually kill you, or you turn the game off.

Well, fighting should always be a last resort until you're more comfortable. Just like how a mouse wouldn't try to fight off a gecko. Stealth, fleeing, and using your agility are your best options. Actually your best weapon is the ecosystem itself. Use the species against each other. You're smart, but you're still prey. Play the game with that mindset

I've played the alpha enough that I can take on lizards with ease. For example, you can pin a lizard to a wall with a spear. Poles are best to escape from them because you lead a lizard up then drop off to buy a few seconds. Green lizards can't climb. If you're being chased, lead a lizard towards another so they can fight

The current game is much more advanced. Lizard have sight so distance, movement, and water affects their vision
The lizard aggressiveness was toned down. You have more moves to make you more agile in general and in tight areas
 
And 80% of them want to eat you?
1) The AI has a personality/temperament variable so you might be able to develop a "friendly" relationship with a predator if you've saved it from other predators, stuff like that. So the world isn't so black and white
2) Off the top of my head, I can think of around 25 species, and at least 10 aren't predators. They tried to really diversify the ecosystem.
 
the dev's tig Source is also amazing and they get into the math and the how of the ecosystem. Also I believe they're using javascript in Unity which is awesome. Rain World is functional. edit crispy says c#
 
Cool update
The past weeks/months/lifetimes have been spent testing and improving the PS4 build with our porting team, Carbon Games. Things are looking REAL NICE

Its pretty crazy though: Joar is in Seoul right now, Carbon is in London, and Adult Swim is in Atlanta. I'm in Boston organizing everything, and never sleeping because as soon as one crew calls it a day, another timezone/day begins! But everything is moving along quite nicely.

For international peeps, it's official that we'll be releasing in a few languages: English, French, Italian, German, Spanish and Portuguese; which im very very excited about. I never expected things to get this big.

We plan on doing Asian languages eventually, but localization is going to take quite a bit for that and we'll have to redo our text system to accommodate, so it'll be down the line a bit.
Another cool thing now that content production is wrapped up is that I can start focusing on PR/media stuff.

For some that sounds like dirty words I know, but what I mean by it is putting together cool media to tease on the lead up to release. We're planning on a bunch of trailers showcasing different regions, gif campaigns that follow little narratives, "music videos" showcasing some of our favorite tunes in context, wallpapers and teaser art from Del.

Super super psyched to get into all of that! (Especially since the last few months have been a tedious bug-testing hellscape, haha!)

Damn, hopefully this game hits the 60fps mark on ps4. Those animations deserve to be fully appreciated. I haven't really kept to with the title, so I have no idea what type of game this is even supposed to be, but it's nice to look at.

Potential day one purchase.
 
I hope this game is good and does well. Marketing is so important. Makes me sad that Hyper Light Drifter isn't As big as it deserves to be. Don't want the same to happen again

The game is quite large, and the only way for me to do a proper test is to "speed run" the game and take notes on performance issues, shader problems, wonkiness. I say "speed run" it in quotes because the fastest I, the person who made every room and region and know all the secrets and shortcuts, have been able to play to the win condition (skipping 3 regions!) is 8hrs. And that is ignoring all the narrative stuff and endgame content of course
