Thurrott: MS to announce a new standard Xbox controller and maybe Xbox Elite at E3

I really hope they consider adding a gyroscope. They're basically the odd ones out now and I think it's really easy to underestimate how useful that actually is for aiming in games just because it's not what they're used to and there's a stigma attached to motion controls.

I'd love to know how people convinced themselves asymmetric sticks are better.
I don't think most if any had to be convinced of anything...it just feels better to us. 3D games where you're constantly holding up to move forward simply feel better with the left analog stick in the upper portion of the controller to me. A compromise that works is with both sticks on the upper side, like Ninty's Wii U placements.

So I guess I should hold off on getting an Xbone controller for PC then? Since my wired 360 one broke, I was going to get one, but I guess I'll wait until E3 to see what's up.

It's time to bring back the true GOAT controller.

for the love of god NO.

That thing sucks.

"Xbox One Pro" wouldn't be bad.

It's not a great name but I really can't think of anything else that would be as good as that.

"Xbox One Elite" would have been perfect but they've already used that for a previous SKU.

I mean "Xbox One" isn't a great name to begin with, so they have to work with what they got. Any adverb(?) after its name is just sort of awkward to say. It's just a mouthful.

"Xbox One Pro" doesn't sound any worse than Xbox One Elite" to me. Both are decent names. Actually, I think Pro is the better name. One less syllable.

I'd love to know how people convinced themselves asymmetric sticks are better. Is it because it makes it feel like you're closer to the symbol buttons on the right? The dpad used to be there on older controllers so it feels reminiscent?

To each their own I guess but I've tried multiple occasions to see if they feel any better. I tried with the 360 and while the triggers etc felt a mile better than the Dualshock 3, it just felt impractical especially when it came to camera control alongside movement. The XBoxOne controller feels solid but the stick placement still kills it for me personally.

Anyway hopefully the new default is similar to the customisable Xbox One controller (Elite?) in terms of the quality and swap out nature of it.

I think it just depends on the game. For example, I think asymmetrical works a lot better for action games like Devil May Cry and racing games since those types of games don't usually require heavy use of the second stick and, with action games at least, use the face buttons as the primary input. But symmetrical works better for 2D games and fighters, especially since for me, I'm using the d-pad for those kinds of games, not the analog stick.

Shooters, I don't think it inherently matters. I can go either way with no issues.

Xbox pad stick position is the best position. Nothing comes close. I had to buy a x battle adaptor and a wired 360 pad before I could even play my ps3.

The xbone controller is pretty bad with its shoulder buttons. Probably won't bother with any elite console since I haven't been impressed at all with their initial offering. The only thing that might tempt me is if it's a good deal more powerful than the new ps4, which I don't really see happening

When they added 3.5mm jack they also fixed the bumpers.

From NX thread.. sounds pretty interesting 👀

I literally am parsing this from a group text. My buddy works IT for a chip plant in Upstate NY. He claims (and I have zero reason to not believe him) that there is concurrent production happening for NX and a MS thing, I have no specs or details other than there was mix up between which slides were for which and the ones made for NX were intended for an "xbox one upgrade"

Not very interested in Neo but I can't lie, I'm super interested to see what MS does and if they'll announce a new XB1 at E3.

I've been waiting to jump in to that ecosystem and with Cuphead, Crackdown, Sea of Thieves, and Gears on the horizon I would def. be all over a more powerful, "new" XBox One.

Chip could be anything and doesn't mean it's the SoC.
That last sentence is confusing.

It's just saying that there were slides for a presentation (like PowerPoint) and instead of showing the NX slide they showed an Xbox slide that referred to an upgraded Xbox.

come on now. You don't really think that, do you? LOL

With PC having 2 major VR players, their direct competition having a VR platform, their own ties to Oculus and rumors of a higher speced Xbox why wouldn't it be a plausible outcome? Naturally an Xbox One Slim wouldn't have the juice to power the Rift but if we are already into the land of Xbox One.Five then why count out Rift compatibility?

Slide, I guess, means the chip design that is printed on a silicon wafer. What he's saying is someone at the chip fab was supposed to stamp out NX chips for Nintendo - they'd have their own design of course. But the chip fab got it mixed up with MS' XB1+ chip design and printed out a bunch of XB1+ silicon wafers on Nintendo's coin.

PowerPoint no? He got the basic chip briefing as part of making the silicon but the slides were wrong?

Edit: awww beaten. Ah well, to the point I'm curious where/if Microsoft goes with an upgraded xbox. I would love a test of upgraded vs slim in the marketplace.

For the controller I think they will standardize the Elite. Maybe selling a stripped down version then sell all the paddles and sticks as an accessory pack to keep costs down.

Maybe include screenshot / video buttons too, and possible Mic for voice / Cortana commands.

The console I think will just be a Slim, with maybe a 'silent' clock increase made possible by the node shrink.

I think MS will go full next gen in 2017, with both hardware, games and marketing strategy etc. XB1 will be forgotten like a bad smell and never spoke of again!

14nm, ~6TF, HBM2.

Haha, not going to happen. However, 4-5x the power of XBO at a similar launch price is completely plausible if they can ditch ESRAM and use the same size chip on 14nm.

Yeah, seems unlikely. Although what are EG.it like on reporting compared to EG.net? The latter are pretty rigid on not reporting rumours until there is plenty of evidence to back it up.

Lol no convincing neccisary. After years of playing PSOne, the most comfortable position to rest my thumbs on a PS controller are where the Dpad and Face buttons are. Xbox came and put a stick where PS' dpad is, placing the LS in the most comfortable position... And the position I was already accustomed to for controlling movement. Which is great because that stick has become THE primary form of input.

On the right side, one is constantly switching between face buttons and joystick. All are equally important, and the face buttons are where space requirements dictate.

I'm more confused as to why anyone would want both of their sticks towards the inside of the controller. That location relegates then to 'secondary' positions... It's clear to me that analog controls were an after thought to Sony. I remember playing madden when Sony got into the analogue business and people were still using the dpad, primarily.

Just expect nothing at all. The only thing I'm expecting is a smaller console and not much else. I think by now anything else would have been leaked. Who knows. Better to just keep those expectations very low.

Currently listening to the latest Sams Report (the same guy who wrote the article in the OP over at Thurrott.com):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j9Tzo62onJI

Not yet at the Xbox part. Will update here if there are any news.

Is that actually Eurogamer?!

I did not understand if via upgrade or if they spoke of changes that will operate on the fly, before the release. it will be extremely powerful from the start, i think 5-6 times PS4 Neo, then something in the order of over 10 TFLOPS or so. "

Come again .....

EDIT: Damn, quoted the wrong person, should have been the Eurogamer article. Point still stands though, what?! lol

I won't believe that story until more reports agree with it. Also, selling at a loss? Yea, I don't know about that. We shall see though. Next month baby.

Currently thinking about opening a thread about the eurogamer.it rumor. I have some evidence for a dedicated event as well and also heard... Something else that would give some credibility...

They are sourcing some place called xrays and it reads like made up BS. I personally wouldn't but hey what do I know :p.

I'm fairly neutral in this battle but the argument that a stick on the upper portion of the controller feels better is sort of ruined by the fact that the right stick, which requires the most delicate movements, is placed in the less-than-ideal position.
