COD: Infinite Warfare: Seamless ground to orbit, mission choice, customizable jet

Yep, that's the best since MW2 or Black Ops. The plot is simple (and that's good for a COD game) but interesting because of the setting (realistic enough), really good cinematography once again, great job with the storytelling (ONLY ONE PROTAGONIST FINALLY, NO MORE BRIEFING), and this is so goddamn fun. Every level is fun, they are sometimes more open, you have lots of exotic gameplay, level design is brilliant.

And yes it was gorgeous.

There were actually little subversions here and there that I liked, like how when you join Sentinel it does that flashy computer briefing thing, but on what of the missions it actually pulls back to see them in the briefing room.

I think as a narrative AW suffers a bit because it doesn't build up enough Mitchell and Irons relationship, but I think Spacey actually does a rather good job with the role he's given and you can sorta understand why he's doing what he's, even if it's megalomaniacal. There's also references to Irons plan beforehand, with how the Detroit refugees have had their DNA sequenced so they will be spared by Manticore.

This sounds like what destiny should have been to me. Of course it probably still plays like a typical call of duty experience in terms of controls/gunplay.

Makes me wonder if this model will evolve going forward and call of duty 2017 is like a big expansion pack with 2018 COD being a second expansion pack.

Transitions to orbit and set points on the planet can only be so seamless if you can't fly around the entire planet. At best that's going to be a loading screen that looks cool and doesn't quite feel like a loading screen. What Destiny failed to do, in other words.

As for the spaceship combat... I'm really nervous about that part. COD has been sprinkling in these helicopter/jet missions since what, Black Ops? They have all been kind of terrible and incredibly shallow. Air based killstreaks in multiplayer have also controlled really terribly. I haven't gotten around to playing Battlefront, but I've heard the complaints about how shitty the flying portions are, and I have a really bad feeling that the same thing will happen here. Done right the concept could be really fun, but the flight mechanics need some real depth.

As for the non-linear nature of it... let's face it, that trailer was filled to the brim with standard COD scripted animations that we all know and love/hate. I see Black Ops 2 style levels of open gameplay at best. Not that that can't be fun.

As for multiplayer, I guess they haven't really talked about it yet? The space fighter thing doesn't seem to fit there. Another reason I think the Jackal will be super shallow.

In for at least legacy edition day one. Even if it ends up being a disaster COD4R will be worth it for me.

You didn't have my curiosity, but now you have my attention.

Intrigued. Highly. Sounds like things I loved about Black Ops 2's branching campaign are inspired here.

This touches more on the elements mentioned in the OP.

I think in previous Call of Duty games, you had vehicle sequences and maybe underwater combat and various things that you engage in, but for us the exciting thing has been to create all of these sequences as a holistic experience, so now you’re playing as one character and he's a pilot, and you get to fly his fighter jet and you get to customize it. You get to command your ship to go to a particular location and launch out in your fighter jet, jump out into zero-g, fight along the surface of an enemy ship, breach the side of the ship, and engage in boots-on-the ground combat inside the ship. Once inside, you can scuttle it, steal enemy intel from it, and get the heck out and back to your ship and order it to another location.

And so much of this is without loading screens, totally seamless, so it’s a much different experience.

At that point, he is now tasked with this underdog challenge of fighting off the remaining settlement defense force fleet and protecting Earth. When you get aboard The Retribution, you can talk with various crew members, like the officer who controls all flight deck operations or the one who handles your loadout and armory. There’s your navigator who will take your ship wherever it needs to go to. By talking with these people you can mechanically engage with all the upgrades and mission choice and all that stuff, but then also emotionally you understand the weight of your responsibility as leader. The Retribution has thousands of people aboard and your responsibility is to them, your crew, while also to the mission and the billions of people back home, and it’s this very difficult, emotional challenge that a leader has, which I think is going to be one of the unique, interesting parts of Infinite Warfare.

The core loop of Call of Duty is ducking behind cover, gun in hand, and shooting guys. But there are variations on that between these moments. Zero-g is one of those variations that will allow you to go from flying your Jackal to boots-on-ground, fighting in a ship. We talked to our military consultants – we have two Navy SEALs we work with and one naval bridge officer – and asked them, “Okay, we’re fighting in space, what are the things you need to quickly get behind cover and move across the space and close distance?” and all of that. So we talked to them about what they would want and we worked out a core series of abilities that the player has, like thrusters that allow you to quickly move across space, like a grappling hook that allows you to attach to the surface of an object using your mag boots, which are another element. We also have non-axis aligned combat, so up isn’t always up, it’s whatever the surface you’re standing on, however it’s curved, that’s up. It’s all relative. The goal with the environment is to give you the means to move as quickly as possible from surface to surface to get inside a ship and do what you need to do.

We're basically Commander Shepard, but if Shepard was in still in the Alliance.

I wondered how long it would be until we started seeing more earth fighting to space fighting transitions in games. So many games had one or the other, interesting that it's COD that figures out how to do both (I know, I know...Dust 514 but come on.)

Heh funny to see two ex Naughty Dog guys there.

A lot of ND devs landed at Infinity Ward over the last two years, wonder if it will show in the SP portion.

Nice to see them try something that sounds ambitious, at the very least on paper. Should be a good balance to the remastered MW1 campaign. And even if IW SP ends up being disappointing, there'll always be Sledgehammer's next title to look forward to (I still love that campaign).

The more I hear about this, the more exciting It sounds.
Oh man. The fighting on the asteroid spinning out of control while having to remain in the shade when facing the sun during its rapid day/night cylce since its 2000° because of the proximity to the sun sounds insane..

Sounds like a crazier version of Haestrom from Mass Effect... which brings that connection again. :)

How come cod hasn't had a love interest in the stories yet? Be cool if they did it eventually. If this one had one and it was similar to Armageddon it'd be pretty fun.

Black Ops 3 sort of did, but the strange twist makes it all weird.

Also I like how on the stream they said that it's a war story, not a sci-fi story and that it has more in common with WW2 war stories than anything else.

They can barely do normal human interactions right. AW and BO1/2 are the few in the franchise that were carried by the characters.

EDIT: I forgot about Kane in BOIII. But then again, I'm trying to forget all about that campaign.

Really can't wait to play around with the Jackal, it sounds awesome (and will help fill my dogfighting itch if Ace Combat 7 isn't around this year).

The character in blops 3 seemed to be into you but you friend zone them. I'm not looking for some godlike story, I just enjoy the Michael bay summer action flick campaigns.

Oh I get you. Maybe in this game? Hard to say.

Honestly looks like this is the most effort IW has put into a SP in awhile. Funny thing is that, it almost seems like it would lend itself to a coop campaign, but it's kind of nice to see them pull back on that and emphasize that it's a SP only experience.

On a side note... I hope this thread can stay more positive... The other thread circle jerking about MW and how this looks shit and such is really bumming me out. It really feels like no one cares that they're trying all this really cool stuff. It kind of sucks, cause I would love to actually talk with people about all of these features without getting back handed comments about how terrible it is already.

Yeah, I'm interested in the changes in this game as well. I don't think the seamless orbit transition will be as big a deal as they make it out to be (glorified load screen sounds about right) unless the game is really open. But still, nonlinearity is good. BLOPS3 had skill trees iirc, and if they kept developing nonlinearity and skills, and added some non combat approaches (stealth like in BF Hardline) we could have a pseudo-Deus-Ex type game in our hands. One can only wish :p

I feel you man, it's really obnoxious how most people are attacking Infinite Warfare. Before the reveal all I really cared about was MWR but I've slowly come around to IW. I understand if you don't enjoy the newer stuff but damn it's coming off as straight vitriol. It feels like it's mostly people who don't care for cod who're doing it too.

Just started watching the live stream but has there been any mention of a voiced protagonist? Voiceless main characters always bugged me in IW Call of Duty's.

Black Ops 3 skills were cool and useful, but honestly didn't help the game much. Still, it was a step in the right direction, even if the rest of the campaign stepped back.

Yeah... It's just getting tiring... It's not like people have to like it, that's the thing. It's like you said, it's coming off as straight vitriol and that's depressing. No one wants to have a mature converstation in the other thread.

I have no doubt in my mind, that come the BF announcement. This will only get worse and worse.

He talks. You actually hear him when in the trailer, they go into space and the other characters asks Reyes if he sees the ships. He's in the second teaser: "We can still fight back," and also:

So thankfully, we're no longer a faceless, voiceless, protagonist.

My only problem with Ghosts was that it was just boring. I enjoyed the single player (it's quite up there in my list of best COD campaigns) but I'm mainly a multiplayer guy with the series.

I don't know if it was because it was just too safe and it did nothing new, I can't put my finger on it because it was an alright shooter. But man, was it a drag to play. First and only time I felt like that with the series online.

I'm hopeful for the SP, they have done a good job up to this point.

Out of curiosity, I looked up a plot summary of Black Ops 3 and...yeah, let's hope this one has better writers, this time around.

They always promise a lot. Activision are masters of marketing. They know what people want to hear before release. It will be a standard 6h linear fps campaign with some gimmicks that will have no impact on the actual gameplay.

Nice. Watching more and more of the stream has me coming around.

Yeah. Also based on the screenshot I edited my post, I really hope they follow the AW route of having third person cutscenes. I always like those. Though I loved AW... Still hated how Mitchel stopped talking ingame and only spoke in cutscenes.

It could be voiceless again, but that would be jarring in this case due to how much they hype up the leadership aspect (I'm looking at you BF4).

AW wasn't exactly voiceless as Mitchell spoke in cutscenes, but Ghosts played it straight. Infinity Ward usually does, and in a small way I kinda hope they do just so they stop embarrassing themselves with in-game dialogue (looking at you BOIII).

wait what?

I mean this feeling of a CoD game looking interesting to me is alien enough but that doesn't sound like what is actually going to happen in the game. Need more info.

I always felt BO2 nailed the in game dialogue. Seeing Section talk both in third person and in game on top of decent dialogue. AW was good but lack of in game voice took me out of it. BO3 is another story.

Half-brother! I loved the story, even thought the twist at the end doesn't make sense it makes for an interesting sequel(which we'll never get:/). Like I said earlier in the thread I'm not looking for an Oscar worthy story, I'm looking for a summer popcorn flick with crazy stuff. For me IW has yet to let me down on the story front so I'm getting hyped for the IW story, plus some people descriptions of colonists attacking earth similar to gundam and battlestar galactica sounds fun as hell.

On the mp front I enjoyed my time with the ghosts, while there were definitely flaws to it I still had fun. Off the top of my head the flaws being too big maps (got righted with dlc), ground uavs and some other stuff I don't remember since its been so long. But there were fun things in mp, map specific killstreak rewards which gave the maps some much needed personality(Michael Myers and predator), the horror themed map, the return of dogs in some form. It gets a lot of unnecessary hate imo and I have no idea why.

Hopefully Infinity Ward rights Treyarch's mistake of removing knifing from the game. The hit detection, ttk and netcode (my preference of course) has always been good Infinity Ward CODs so I'm pumped this'll be a fun one assuming nothing gamebreaking gets added.

I'm half and half on this. Sometimes it felt so awesome to get a cool knife kill... On the other hand, it always felt like the range was too long. So the gun putting was nice at times since it was still decent but it did also lead to melee being used far less than it had in previous games.

I will say, that despite me hating what they've done with the supply drops. The idea of getting a sword skin for knives in Black Ops 3 is kind of awesome... Just wish you could get some without the supply drops.

Definitely sounds cooler than it is guys. Until I see it, it defo is scripted bull.

I mean, outside the "seamless" aspect. I can't really see anything being unrealistic. The real test will be E3, if they want to get people onboard, they need to show it in action on stage.

As of now, I'm actually pretty excited for this! Loving the sound of the jet and loot elements. I still enjoy COD because the campaigns are allows fun and they offer multiplayer with bots. This is the most excited for a new one I've been since Black Ops II.

Readying this I really hope the trophies are going to be such a grind like they were in Blops3 (talk about not respecting your time...)

My biggest issues with the BOIII campaign were mostly that the levels were just WAY too long, they needed fat trimmed from them really bad.
