Hey Nintendo, I am your life long fan and here are some of the series I care about more than Zelda:

F-Zero
Super Mario
Kirby
Rhythm Paradise
Mario Kart
Smash Bros.
Pokemon
Band Bros.
Animal Crossing
Mario and Luigi
Paper Mario
Donkey Kong
Wario Ware
Mario Strikers
Mario Party (before you ruined it)
Mario Tennis (before you ruined it)

Other series which I probably care equally for:
Advance Wars
Fire Emblem
Pikmin
Metroid

Yes, people like me exist. This presentation means nothing to me and I bought a 3DS and Wii U day 1.

This Zelda demo better have great amount of content. This demo has to sustain interest for 3 days...that can't be done if it is only has tiny portion of the game.

I would honestly be more excited about this game if it was coming this year. Next March or beyond is too long a wait.

this is embarrassing

and I think it actually HURTS Zelda, because they've got this weird narrative going at the same time. "Why are they only showing Zelda?" "Where are their other games?" "Is Nintendo in desperation mode?"

I think you are missing the point here. I don't think anyone says Zelda will be bad or people don't like Zelda, we just want to see other games except 1. As good as Zelda will be it cannot make up for all the other game which will be missing.

I guess my point was, Nintendo will still capture mind-share contrary to popular belief in this thread. Zelda will, or at least I should say that it has the potential to capture peoples (both gamers and the casual audience alike) imagination. People will not perceive Nintendo as missing in action because you'll still be inundated with content, be it on YouTube or Twitter. The other stuff will come later, Nintendo's E3 was just delayed imo because Nintendo will have an NX blowout this year, I suspect around September.

Haha, geez. This has really devastated some people. Nintendo should just quit already! They suck! They might as well give up!

How is this alienating their fanbase?

Well, I don't know, just reading this thread. When you give the silence treatment to your audience that has been used to Directs every few months and E3 hype (bad or good), i call that alienating.
Drip feeding the same 3 zelda images for 4 fucking years is alienating.
Keeping their mouth shut about Mother 3 on VC like it's a big secret when their has been rumours for years that the translation was done and ready is too.

Edging is only cool when you get to cum once in a while.

No Direct @E32016
"Fuck off they couldnt even make a Direct for those few games, they're quitting everything. Nintendoomed."

If Nintendo Direct @E32016
"This Direct sucked, even worse than last E3 one.Nintendooomed."

tbh i'm okay with this, given this situation and the fact they'll probably make a NX direct some months after this.Hooping Treehouse wont spoil the entire game
.They are gonna spoil everything, aren't they.

Kyle Bosman is going to be taking some anti-depressants tonight.
Seriously, well done to anyone who presumed NX would have a big onstage reveal. This is the Nintendo of today, it's time to smell those roses.

Nintendo is taking good business decisions, i better have this than make a direct with no games. I hope that all this works in a long term.

It might hurt Zelda because there are already people in the "Zelda must be the greatest thing ever if they're focusing just on it" mode. You can't realistically satisfy this type of expectations.

Zelda means more to me than all of those, and as we all know I'm more important than you in Nintendo's eyes (<3 Kimishima) so it makes sense that they prioritize my needs. This presentation means everything to me and that is what's important.

You know the really sad thing? They could still have a somewhat decent presence at E3 without even trying. Just focus on their eShop/Virtual Console.

I bet a lot of people here would be ecstatic over Mother 3 on Wii U and Pokemon Gold and Silver on the 3DS (following on from Red and Blue in February).

What about Gamecube on the Wii U vc? Or christ, even a couple more HD remasters people have been crying out for? Mario Sunshine and F-Zero GX?

If they outright said in the PR in the OP that it would be an event that focuses on Zelda, Sun and Moon and the above eShop releases, there would've been a somewhat pleased reaction, maybe even excited by some (I would have been).

But whatever, at this point, I'm kinda done with this company. There's only so many times you can be an apologist for them without starting to feel like an idiot.

The problem with this is Nintendo doesn't seem to schedule their dev cycles to align with E3, instead they announce whatever is ready to be shown at the time. Yes they might have another HD remaster coming later this year, but at this point in time it might not be in a presentable state and as such it misses out on E3. It shows they don't value E3 coverage as much as other companies.

Yikes.

Who the fuck is going to watch a whole day of Zelda, anyway. Nintendo diehards will likely want to avoid spoiling too much of the game, and everyone else will be preoccupied with other games on the showfloor.

This is baffling.

I agree with you for why the games are being delayed. But E3 is once per year and the perfect opportunity to show new stuff, not showing the NX at E3 or some new games is a huge missed opportunity. Showing everything at September just isn't the same.

Well at least on the plus side I save myself tons of money by not buying any Wii U games this year as Nintendo, plus I can tackle my backlog as I won't be busy playing new Wii U games. :D

I get having Zelda U being the only Wii U title shown but the 3DS line is pretty solid and we have Pokémon Sun and Moon releasing.

Still though it's cool that they are finally showing Zelda U, but it isn't releasing this year and is likely to be released winter 2017.

Hopefully there will be a direct in-between now and after E3.

The only two things they have said are:

1. Zelda will be the only playable game on the floor.
2. They are kicking off with a Zelda blow-out.

Not sure how this translates to "no other games will be promoted or announced". Plenty of 3DS software on the horizon, including unannounced projects according to Kimishima. Zelda will inevitably be the focus, because it's the Wii U's swan song (with not much else on the system to show). However, it's not all that reasonable to expect a no-show for 3DS.

It depends on what you want NX to be. I'm hoping for a 1st party box with weak specs targeting the mobile crowd, not a Sony/MS competitor chasing the western AAA multiplat gamer, i.e. E3's main audience.

Distancing themselves from E3 is a good move because their games don't have much overlap with people who tune in to watch the show, in the same way showcasing Nintendogs and Wii Fit at E3 is ineffective.

Why not just have Nintendo go third party if that is all you expect out of them?

oh yeah, this too.

I'm not sure what "greatness" people are expecting. It's just going to be a regular demo, everyone.

I really don't understand what some of you don't understand. They've reorganised their entire company after dismal sales of their last home console and are working towards making games for their new console. The new console isn't ready to be revealed yet. What's the confusion there?

I swear it's like some of you think console wars are an actual fucking thing. There is a company which is having a diminished presence at a press gaming convention at a time when they have nothing substantial to show the press. That is the entirety of this story.

This is what I'm thinking.

This game isn't like splatoon. I don't want to watch a whole day stream of it before I play. How much can they possibly show?

Ugh.

Kind of crazy to think that FromSoft has released Bloodborne and Dark Souls 3 since Nintendo released this teaser, and there's still another year to go before the game is out.

Nothing is better than me wasting my time with very little content (and almost all of it being what we've already seen) being stretched to fill a direct. No problems, they'll have new directs throughout the year as they always do to update us.

How does it personally impact some of you if Nintendo reveals the NX at E3 or a few months later? Either way the NX releases next year...

This is why I think that skipping E3 entirely would have been the better choice. At least then it would just seem like they have something else cooking. Now it just looks like they have nothing to show.

The last thing Iwata said to fans last year is that they were sorry for the 2015 presentations and would try better next year.

And now this.

Well we could always get some kind of Direct before right? We got the mini direct a couple weeks before E3 last year and we got almost more out of that than anything else.

But they're launching new hardware - in which a lot is riding - 3 months after the holiday. Plus there's still stuff coming out for 3DS like Pokemon, Rhyhm Heaven and Federation Force (teehee).

So shouldn't they be trying to drum up excitement for NX. They should be showing previews of games like Zelda running on NX.Then talk about Nx specs or show tech demos running on NX hardware.

This is totally a dumb move. They better pull out all the stops this fall with nx's reveal. If they treat it like a Treehouse event they are fucking done before they start.

Why do they need to pay if they want to phase out of E3? Just drop it and be done. It makes no sense.

Right that was my point, that reasoning makes no sense. None of these reasons so far make no sense besides them originally planning to show NX and games at E3 but the delay made them change their mind.

And that still makes no sense- even if it's not releasing until March 2017, why can't they show it off here?

I'm sure internally there is some logic to this decision but like I said I doubt we'll ever hear it.

So who else will skipping the treehouse stream? If all they are showing is Zelda game play, no thanks. I don't want to be spoiled...

So dumb.

This is a reaction to the negative reaction last year, surely.

They know that if they announce a direct, people will get hyped. They have nothing to fulfil that hype. If a bunch of spinoffs were received so poorly last year, this year would be a wipeout of negative impressions. Better to just cancel the direct and bury the bad news on a sleepy thursday in May.

This allows them to:
-Have a day of Zelda, which is, in essence, pre-announcement NX hype building, as that's the key launch title
-Spend two days at Treehouse showing off their smaller stuff (Color splash etc)
-Use youtube and twitter to get the typical trailers out

I for one am relieved we won't have the build-up and crash of last year's direct. And no shitty 'hype train image' threads this year either.

The negative impressions made by this will be fleeting, and the second Nintendo reveals the NX with its software they will be erased. This isn't a big deal, and it's Nintendo making a good decision. Better to admit it's not your time that pretend it is and be shown up for a fool.

EDIT: Humourously, as I'm on a Zelda blackout I'll barely be able to see anything from Nintendo.

As I mentioned previously, doing so would be relinquishing their floor place, which is a pretty meaty amount and they'll probably need that next year ;)

This is the first Zelda game of its kind though. Open world and HD. FromSoft already had experience making those types of games. They were in a mode to pump that kind of content out.
