Raspberry Pi Gaming thread - Cheap emulation and gaming projects

I got a Pi 3. Why won't GBA or NeoGeo roms load? NES and SNes run fine. Any info out there to help a newbie with this specific problem? I really want to play Metal Slug!

Any links with instructions? I'm having a hard time finding clear help.

Just google for "gba bios rom" or "neo geo bios rom", and depending on the emulator you use, you place them in your roms folder, or a special bios folder. Reason they're never included in emulators is because it's illegal to distribute them because of copyrights.

That Gamegirl will be good purely because of the 8bitdo partnership so you know it won't have shit buttons.

I'd be down for kickstarting this in a heartbeat.

I've kinda given up on my own raspberry pi zero handheld, the display went kaput after a few weeks and I can't be asked to to spend any more free time on it :(

Thanks, but I actually checked this board before asking here. :)

It doesn't have the model number I'm looking for though. Which is SDC10G2/64GBCR.

There is SDC10G2/16GB but that's for 16Gb, it says ''Doesn't work with Raspbian Jessie, weird random issues when making any changes to file system. '' Though I have no clue if the same thing applies for this one or if it'll give me problems with Retropie.

Lordy am I having a bitch of a time connecting either of my 8bitdo nes or snes controller to bluetooth. Works great when connected to usb though.

I tried restarting the rasp pi without connecting the usb and only turning on the controller when emulation station has fully loaded. The blue light is solid on the controllers, but the controllers won't do anything and can't get into Retropi. It says to press a button to configure the controller of press f4. However, I already configured the controller! But if I have the controller plugged in to usb and restart the rasp pi, I can get into Retropi no problem.

The controllers are recognized as being connected to bluetooth in the settings, but they just won't work. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

Edit: might as well just use usb. Don't wanna have a stroke trying to figure this out, lol

I went through the same before giving up on the 8Bitdo SNES controller. Works great for my phone though.

Instead I use a PS3 controller. The new Retropie 3.8 build fixed a freezing issue caused by the PS3 bluetooth connection and it works absolutely perfectly, except that when you use the PS3-specific bluetooth connection, it disables the default bluetooth drivers and I don't think you can connect with any other bluetooth devices.

I tried setting this up a while ago with a Pi 1, is it worth it to continue if I just want to play 8/16 bit games?

Realistically how far will a Pi 1 take me in terms of emulation.

Now that my kids are actually sleeping and I have time to myself, I'd like to take another swing at it.

I just finished up getting retropie running on a pi 1 model B. it works great for 8/16bit games and fba for most arcade games but you'll want to overclock to 1GHz. The process to overclock is just a simple menu toggle, just make sure you get some heatsinks on amazon they are only like $5.

Right on. I'll eventually just grab a 3, but I wanted to dive in tonight, scratch some itches I've been having lol.

Does anyone know off hand what type of HDMI port a Pi 2 B has? I was under the impression it was HDMI mini, but that doesn't seem to line up with what I've seen online.

I got the Atari 800 emulator working last night and was in nostalgia heaven. There are a lot of great games on that platform that aren't anywhere else.

I need to tweak the controls a bit and I'll be very happy for a while.

For the life of me I cannot get my Xbox One controller working on a Pi 3 running retropie 3.8

All the advice I can find doesn't help.

Anyone have any info that works?

Has any of you went from a Pi2 to a Pi3?

I wonder, if I swap my SD card from Pi2 to Pi3, will it boot ok? Or I'll face lots of issues?

Something went bad with my PS1 emulation.

I was at the retropie main menu and tried plugging in a 2nd PS3 controller and syncing it by pressing the PS button, worked fine. Showed up as controller 2.

But then none of my PS1 games would launch. Every other emulator works fine.

Currently trying to figure out why...

Edit: aaand I got it, deleted the PSX config files in /configs/psx, then went to Retropie Setup and used "install individual emulators" to re-download lr-pcsx-rearmed, which gave me fresh config files.
I tried just doing a reinstall of the emulator, but it didn't overwrite the old configs. Had to delete them.

Got everything set up in my old Raspberry Pi 1 but everything kind of runs like ass.
Everything being NES/SNES/Gen.
I don't remember it being choppy before, I'm just using default settings. Any suggestions?

Not that it particularly matters, this was super easy, might as well order a 3.

Pulled the trigger on a 3 and a case, should be here Wednesday.
Was looking to order some controller adapters, but realized I have a bunch of bluetooth stuff sitting around already, like 2 DS4s, a DS3, and 2 Wii U Pro controllers.
Ideally I'll use the Pro Controllers, do they have any issues with RetroPie?
How far can I run decently on a Pi 3? PS1? DC?

PS1 works pretty much flawlessly.

DC is often choppy and slow. Then again the only games I got to even work were Maken X and Ikaruga.

Excellent. I'm also assuming that the reason the other things I was trying out last night was running like ass was because I left it at 1080p, WHOOPS.

Is there a list of recommended cores for RetroPi? I know on retroarch for 3ds there are certain ones that are favored.

Stuff is getting weird, now Mame (lr_mame2003) stopped running about half of the games. Also, when I went to update the retropie setup script, it's been reformatted and I can't find the PS3 bluetooth connect option. Where the hell did it go?

Probably going to reinstall 3.8

Plugging in a 2nd PS3 controller triggered all this for me, so be careful.

Just bought the 64Gb microSD, will try it out near the week-end.

Scraping all my games once again sure is gonna be fun. :lol

What's the opinion about RetroPie vs. Recalbox vs. Lakka?

I had RetroPie on my RPi2, I've bought a RPi3 and used Recalbox... the setup, including getting an SNES30 8Bitdo controller installed, was considerably simpler. Haven't done much playing yet.

I can't seem to get a Wii U Pro controller linked up, even after following what the Wiki says.
I do sudo bluetoothctl and then it freezes.

I bought a Pi2 a while back and finally got around to messing around with it. Installed Retropie successfully, and played a few random games, with everything running fine.

The only issue I've run into so far, is with the 8bitdo Nes 30 Pro controller. If I use it in Xbox mode, the controller works fine, except I can't map L2 and R2, which is an issue for PS1 games. If I try to use it in regular mode, I'm able to configure everything, and it seems to work in the menus, however when I go into a game, only the dpad and start button (which is mapped to A) works. Any ideas on what is going wrong?

Also when I pick different resolution options before loading a game (by pressing a button after selecting a rom) either it seems to look exactly the same or I get nothing on the screen. Is it best to just leave these settings alone, and edit settings in the Retropie config editor? Also are there any guides out there on what video modes/shaders/overlays are best for each system?

edit: Any tips on fixing the overscan? If I turn the option on there's a small border during the boot up splash screen, but regardless if I have the option on or off, the screen is a little too far zoomed in once I'm actually in Retropie.

You can turn off over scan in the settings text file on the pi SD card. It's the boot settings, I can't recall off the top of my head where to find it though. Sorry.

Hadn't touched my Pi2 in awhile since I wasn't too happy with the general input lag. I messed around with all the settings on both my Pi and TV to no avail. Plus my other consoles don't really seem to have any input lag issues so I just concluded that it was the emulation quality of the Pi. My parents just got a new TV so I decided to try my Pi there and wow -- zero input lag (at least not noticeable)! The responsiveness feels like playing on a CRT! Now I have to look at buying a new monitor or TV for my setup.

With all the hype around the new Doom, I thought I'd revisit the originals. Has anyone tried ZDoom on Retropie?

How are DS and gba games on this on a big TV? I basically just wanted to play srpgs and Pokémon but I am not sure what is capatible or how it would look.

Can't play DS games, GBA is fine look as you don't have some smoothing filter on, you can put scanlines on aswell if you prefer.

It looks just as good as SNES games. Minish Cap/Metroid Zero Mission/Fusion was meant to be played on a large TV IMO.

See, I wanted to enhance the crap out of DS, Gba and PSX games. Maybe play some PSP games like Trails too which I already own twice.

Haven't spent time with Lakka. Recalbox vs Retropie is a simplicity vs versatility trade off. Latest versions of Recalbox don't even need a keyboard for setup. But Retropie lets you customize more, add systems not supported yet in Recalbox. I stick with Recalbox because PSP and Dreamcast emulation isn't worth it yet for me.

It's config.txt, which I've been editing to try and fix the overscan. Any changes I make are reflected during the Retropie splash screen, but as soon as the Emulation Station splash screen hits, the changes are no longer reflected from that point on, and everything goes back to being just a bit too large. However, if I go into something like Raspi-config or run command editor, my overscan settings are reflected again. Unfortunately, the same doesn't happen when I go into an emulator. Any ideas on why this is happening? Is there somewhere else I need to change settings like this?

I had the same issue. Spent all night on it. Their forums weren't much help.

Just give up and remain using the USB wire. It simply won't work.

Hey! Sorry for the delay in getting back to you on this. I would have answered sooner if I saw this.

The problem with the 8bitdo is that there are two different modes when using it. "Keyboard" mode, then there's "joystick" mode. When you try to connect it by just pressing start, it goes into keyboard mode, which doesn't work with Retropie. So, when connecting, you have to hold R button with start. Yeah, I know, wtf, right? Well there's no other choice. It's a really minor hassle but plays great once you connect this way.

There is some additional programming you need to do to get EmulationStation to understand he controls, so use this link to help.

If you are still having issues, PM me.

I've done this and I still have issues.

When I connect to it, I'm using another controller. I am supposed to unhook that and reboot? Am I connecting to via Bluetooth while plugged into it with a USB cable?

I can get it to successfully pair, but doesn't control it after.

I have two issues:

  • Emulation Station gets stuck when I try to scrap game data. It says "Scraping in Progress" and stops responding to my controller or keyboard button presses. What can I do? I don't want to pull the power. It's still downloading data and updating the screen.

  • How can I change the system logos in the main interface? I prefer Super Famicom over Super Nintendo.

Follow the link. You have to add some script rules to force EmulationStation to accept the controls.
