One would have to assume given the CPU cores that these new consoles will focus more on increased resolution instead of frame rates right?

software.

All very well to say they all play the same games....how exactly does that happen...

Console sw has always exceeded the perceived performance capabilities of the hardware due to the closed box, or fixed hardware spec, in which these games that take upwards of three years to create.....under this Scorpio model....you basically have the PC sw situation. And if that was a good thing...then why hasn't PC gaming dominated console's till now? Console model has proven to be successful,in the face of naysayers for years now.

You're ignoring a few things.

It's all forward compatible meaning that even if you just keep an Xbox One you can still play all the new games.

People don't like PC gaming because of the complexity and reliability it offers in comparison to console.

People buy consoles because they can bring it home, plug it in to their TV and just game.

We'll see how the market reacts. I for one see it as a mistake on both Sony and MS part.

Will probably pick up an Xbone S, but the scorpio... not to sure. The consoles can't even do 1080p 60fps consistently. Maybe shooting for 4k will allow them to do that finally, even though I seriously doubt 4k will be the standard, more like the exception.

4K gaming on consoles just doesn't sound realistic, they should be cautious promotion this sort of thing (unless they are going to pull of the old displayed at 4k).

4k/60FPS at the equivalent to PC ultra settings is absolutely impossible on consoles right now at their target price points. Even the GTX 1080 isn't doing that yet.

4k/30FPS at the equivalent of low/medium PC settings.. they could maybe pull that off.

I am just curious how some are going to simultaneously bash the Scorpio, while elevating the Neo, and vice versa, especially concerning the death of defined console generations...

Here are some average 4k framerate numbers from the GTX 1080, a 9TFLOP card:

Crysis 3: 39,8
Tomb Raider: 43,2
Witcher 3: 44,1
Metro Last Light: 52,7
Hitman: 46

Hmmm... what are the 1080p framerates for these games on XB1 (or whatever res they're running at)? Because Forza is already a 60fps locked game at 1080p on the Xbox One, so I'm not sure what sort of picture the chosen games are supposed to paint in comparison.

Vulkan says hi, guess what, PC uses that too

Just because you use Vulkan doesn't automatically make a game as optimized for any hardware offered on PC as a game built directly for a set of hardware on console.

Vulkan isn't just some miracle API that gets rid of the advantage of hardware optimization.

Prepare yourself for talks about the magic of optimizations

I don't know why people are getting flustered over this lol. As a soon to be 1080 owner this is awesome because we are going to have more games taking full advantage of the hardware. Anytime the console makers push tech forward it is good for pc gamers. That is why I was disappointed in the ps4 and Xbox one when they launched. Barely hitting 1080p was simply weak.

Vulkan is an API, not hardware

So current high end graphics card (GTX 1080) have around 9 teraflops right now.

The midrange one (gtx 1070) has about 6.5 teraflops

considering the Scorpio will be released in a bit less then 1 and a half year from now, 6 tera flops don't seem that impressive at first glance.

By that time nvidia will have their TI versions and stuff like that out, going beyond 10 teraflops.

the 360 has 0.23 tera flops, the xb one, 1.3 teraflops.

That means the upgrade from the 360 to the one was bigger then the one to the scorpio

Why are people loosing their shit?

Um...maths?

0.2 to 1.3 = 1.1TF difference

1.3 to 6 - 4.7TF difference.

You need to re-learn maths dude.

Vega or highly OCed polaris?

Mostly likely Polaris because of GDDR5x. Vega's defining feature is supposed to be HBM2.

I think Consoles going the way of PC is a good thing for pure console owners, but a bad thing for hardcore PC gamers.

I don't want a dev restricting my game on my PC rig to "Scorpio" settings when it can do so much more.

I see it the other way; I don't think the 5/6 year cycle was sustainable indefinitely. 3/4 Years seems a lot more reasonable.

The reason is was a 5-6 year cycle was because it gave the customers a chance to buy in when they felt the price was right and get a decent period of use out of the machines. It's from consumer expectations. Shortening it has not worked out in the past and it's been attempted (Sega). I may be wrong on this but they are undermining one of the reasons to still own a console.

Many people are idiots thats about the worst rationale for an argument ever .. Digital foundry just became microsofts best friend.

I play 360 games and xbox one games and soon ill play scorpio games all on one machine .. Kinda like a pc it has backwards compatibility lol cool as ...only a sony fanboy who forgot every previous ps had backwards compatibility as a feature would say thats a bad thing ( and yes there are a lot here) Hows ea noaccess going for you?

I can see you lasting long on here.

I think everyone and his dog knows the PS3 is complicated to emulate, hence the reason we have PS Now. I'm pretty sure when the next Playstation is released, you'll be able to play PS4 games as well.

Why bash them at all.

With forward compatibility it alleviates the argument of rapid generations.

We'll see. The concept is not new. 'forward compatibility' did nothing in the Atari era and actively hurt their business. Ditto with the TG16 upgraded variants a couple decades later. 3DO had a lot of other problems but they too had base spec improvements. ngage tried to take the phone model to the game market with a lot of other bad decisions clouding what you could take away from that. PSP had base spec upgrades but held it back for a while and the 3DS base spec upgrade is a minor success.

After finally returning making a profit with the PS, I very much doubt Sony wants to get in a pissing contest with Microsoft. Isnt gaming one of sonys only profitable divisions now?

Best case power I see is something that will turn a profit with one game sold. We should stop wishing for our favorite game companies to bankrupt themselves fkr our pleasure.

I agree. It is what it is. If MS ends up with better box, so be it. I would rather see a stable sony than a Sony hanging by a thread due to wrong investments.

I don't know why people don't think they'll be able to put out games at 4K.

You have all the indie games, and the big first party games can run at 4K/30FPS.

They never said it HAD to be 4K/60.

Also, I don't get the 1080 comparisons. Aren't Nvidia and AMD TFlops completely different?
