Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 reviews and benchmarks

Planning on snagging a 1080 in the next week or two! What would be a good card to pick that has a good cooling solution for someone who is just going to play at 1080p that isn't going to OC their card?
I wanna keep a look out for that since they seem to be disappearing fast.

Pretty much anything with 2 fans. Stay away from founders edition unless you plan to watercool it.

I'm glad mine doesn't have any coil whine at all that I can hear, even at higher framerates.

And as someone else said earlier in the thread, Overwatch sure makes the card run hotter than most games I've played. Playing it maxed out at 1080p with 150% resolution scaling, which gets me around 130fps, and that brings the card up to 80C where it's usually around 72C in other games.

Just got a few questions about the Inno3D HerculeZ Twin X2:
  • Looking at the card, it looks like a reference PCB. Can anyone confirm?
  • Does the card turn fans off when idle?
Looking into getting one, as its the cheapest on the market but can't find anything about it. Don't really care about the cooler, as I'm probably going to rip it off for a waterblock, but it'd be nice if the cooler wasn't complete junk.

how are Asus graphics card warranties in comparison to EVGA? im thinking about going with the strix this time around.

Asus' warranty and customer service pale in comparison to EVGA. EVGA's the best in the business in that dept., Asus is probably the worst. Asus does generally make high qaulity stuff, though. Their products are great. Service stinks.

I don't know any category where the 980ti would beat the 1080. And from what I've seen the MSI Gaming X has had the highest benchmarks. But I would imagine the STRIX OC and FTW are very close.

The 1080 wins across the board due to brute force with higher clocks and GDDR5X. There's no real-world disadvantage for the 1080. I guess the 980 Ti overclocks a little better, but even a max OC'd 980 Ti isn't gonna touch to a stock 1080.

The number of units aren't important, the resulting peak throughput is important. The only metric in which 980Ti is faster than 1080 is peak memory bandwidth but this is completely compensated by a better memory controller (more advanced compression and larger L2).

And as for leading in performance / OC - it's a lottery, most AIB cards seems to be on the same level initially and your results will vary depending on what GPU you will get. The fastest card out of the box is probably Galax HOF at the moment but I'm not sure if it's even selling yet.

Cheers guys.

Despite initial hesitation I think I'll get a 1080. Partially because it's fancy new tech and I'm an idiot, but also because I should get my tax return in the next month or so and that warrants a nice splurge. I'll sell my 980 Ti too which should cover a good chunk of the investment.

It's just a matter of what card to buy. And then trying to actually fucking get it. No cards are available in Australia.

Gibbo from OCUK.
P.S. Gigabyte shipped us the first batch of WaterForce, only 5-10pc but due mid next week, that has to be one of the best cards out at moment on an extreme level with AIO

I hope we get this in USA next week!

MSY (on the NSW online part) has the MSI Gaming X and the Gigabyte G1, or at least they say they do.
I just ordered the MSI so I'll see what happens on Monday.
All up it came to $1202.97, pretty fucking dumb of me seeing as I only have a 1080p 60hz monitor.
Ah well, might go full stupid and get one of those X34P Ultrawides later this year.

I can't say enough about how amazing my EVGA Super Charged GTX1080 has been. I know it's a reference PCB. I was worried at first that the quality of the card was going to be held back because of the design. I couldn't be more wrong. It doesnt have all that fancy lighting and you get some really great plastic under your screws, but my card holds at around 2050mhz going no lower that 1985mhz when throttled. It's super quiet and plays everything I want at 100hz. 1440p ultra-wide. Yes, it was a bit expensive ($619 I think) but I have no regrets in paying so much for such a great card. 10/10 would stalk nowinstalk again and again.

Awesome, cheers man. Not sure if I should bite now, or wait and see if any higher clocked cards come along and get in a pre-order.....

Computerbase did a comparison of 1080 partner cards.

As I expected really, the Palit/Gainward model won:
1080_21ku2n.png

They are also not horrendously overpriced, so I really see no reason not to get one of those unless you don't have the space for the monstrous cooler.

Also, it looks like on good partner cards you get about 17% performance improvement over the reference cards out of the box:

Thanks for this, exactly what I've been waiting for.
Apparently the ACX 3.0 still kinda sucks or atleast the stock fan curve is too conservative in terms of temps :s

I didn't screenshot it, but the Palit/Gainward model also has some of the lowest in-game temperatures in that test.

And significantly less power consumption than some of the other models. They really did a good job on the cooler/PCB this time around.

Too bad they are missing the MSI Gaming X, probably the most sold non-FE card at least here in Northern Europe. It gets regular stock updates as well unlike most other cards, especially the Strix which is the card everyone ordered initially over a month ago but Asus has almost completely failed to ship cards here. Anyway, the MSI card isn't quite Gamerock/GLH quiet but it would probably be around the third most quiet after those two in that chart. I got one, anyway. Last week a friend of mine asked which card to buy and I didn't hesitate for a second to recommend him Gamerock as long as it fits his case. That's also the card I would buy now if I didn't have the MSI already.

Awesome. Sound is a total non-issue for me given I game with headphones, so I'm 100% about performance.

A cursory Google search makes me think those two aren't very easy to obtain in the US. Is that the case?

Zotac and Palit are nigh impossible to dig up in Australia unfortunately. MSI, ASUS, EVGA and Gainward are the usual suspects. Mainly as a lot (like ASUS) have local branches.

No idea who to go with...

(I copy the answer I sent to someone who asked me about my card in a PM)

My card has that at least. https://youtu.be/9r2kNjreCfE

When I first noticed it it was when I was running software to max the GPU to try and see how hot my card was. But I recall people talking about gpu's making noises when you use those kinds of software because the FPS was uncapped and the software I used was running well above 200+ fps. So I tried to run another software that pressed the GPU to the max but locked at 60 fps but the card made the same sound. Perhaps it was the fans on the GPU that make those sounds, maxing out the cards put the fan speeds at around 55% so I tried to put the fans at 55% manually all the way up to 100% and they were dead silent. (Without the software running in the background ofc). I tried to boot up Overwatch which has a built in FPS meter and shows the temperature on the card. The sound starts as soon as Overwatch starts, even before that card is hot enough to start the fans on the GPU and stops as soon as I exit the game.I get the sound even in the main menu in Overwatch. I play Overwatch with vsync at 60 fps as well. :/

Seems like it... I've got a Super JetStream on order as well and haven't been able to find any good reviews on it
As far as I can tell, the Gainward Phoenix, Gainward Phoenix Golden Sample, Gainward Phoenix GLH edition, Palit Jetstream, Palit Super Jetstream, Palit GameRock and Palit GameRock Premium Edition are all the exact same card in terms of PCB and cooling.

I'd take whichever of those is cheapest/most available.

From what I've found, at least on the Palit side, is that yeah, they're pretty much exactly the same PCB's, so much so that, the SuperJetstream I have, that isn't advertised with dual bios, has the same dual bios switch as the GameRock (advertised with dual bios). so only differences are flair on the coolers, and factory OC.

I think the Amazon nightmare is over for me. Ordered a couple Zotac Amp Extremes last night from newegg. I keep waiting for an email telling me it was out of stock, but it made it overnight, so I think we're good.

Not sure why newegg is letting people buy two of these, but limiting the rest to one per customer. But, I'm happy since I need two for sli.

According to this test, MSI is comparable with Palit Gamerock on load noise-wise.
They also mention the backplate in the Palit card tends to heat up immensely. Might be an issue to some.

Good news about my MSI Gaming X. It was actually the PSU that started making those clicking sound as soon as the GPU started to work. So I guess I have to swap it out. Phew!

Glad to hear this... I know the Super JetStream takes up 2.5 slots due to the extra large cooler so that makes it impossible to SLI, but it's great for people who just want a single card solution

I hope cards taking up 2.5 slots doesn't make it impossible to sli, or I'd be fucked. I assume it works just fine as long as there's space on your motherboard?

... and don't use any PCI expansion cards :p

Oops, yeah this too

I'm not an expert on this, but assuming your motherboard has the slots and your case can fit them I don't see why it wouldn't fit... someone else will have to chime in on if there is a mobo/case setup that will fit.

As long as your motherboard has the spacing (or two PCI slots in between) it should fit. Like this:

Yeah, I'm good:

I was laying in bed last night when I realized that Zotac was a 2.5 slot card and freaked out a bit. Luckily, I'm not fucked.

Also, has the Gaming X Always said this on Amazon:

Thought before it said it was out of stock, now it seems to just say they're aren't selling it. Between that and two customer service people just telling me to cancel my order, I think it's still going to be a long ass time before people get their MSI cards from them. I'm still not cancelling my order until NewEgg actually ships.

I love how Google Translate translates the Palit card's name as Game skirt

Also, EVGA ACX still sucks and EVGA FTW is dramatically overrated. People should just get a Gigabyte, ASUS, MSI, Zotac, or Palit/Gainward instead of waiting the rest of their lives for a EVGA FTW to be in stock.
