So I purchased a 3-in-1 power supply for the Genesis 1/Sega CD/32x today. Not the Retro Trio, but the one linked below, as recommended in the Sega CD
aka Brutal Bear
thread.

I also grabbed a PSU for my AV Famicom too. Should be nice to get rid of a lot of those giant bricks.
Always glad to spend a couple of nice words about those guys. Their adapters surely aren't the prettiest pieces of design ever created, but all those I've bought from them work like a charm.

I got the 3-1 power supply at home and can't recommend it enough. Fantastic product and now I don't have to juggle 3 power bricks to plug in my 32X/Mega Drive 2/Mega CD 2. Go for it :D You won't regret it.

Other than selecting the right ship and weapon combo, thats about it. My go to is the yellow ship, bottom right & red seeker power up most of the time. Use yellow for bosses and I pick blue for certain areas with a lot of enemies and tight spaces. Caves in stage 4 for example.

Thanks, only played untill stage 3 so far.

Yep, go yellow or else you'll have a tougher time with the game.

Thanks!

Btw, i just realized in the options i can change difficulty and number of lives. Any reason not to max lives and play on easy?

Edit: I have the 3-1 power supply from them as well, and i am also very happy with it.

Not as good as I remember, still not bad.

Wow, that second gif from Garfielf kinda reminds me of Ex-Ranza. How peculiar. XD

And this just came in:

I'm so fond of this game I wanted a copy in mint conditions for my collection (my old one was missing the reg card), so I took the chance it's still pretty cheap to go brand new and... First time I see a 'preorder' bonus from that era, lol.

Absolutely loving my experience with the Mega Drive thus far.

Currently own;

- Sonic 2
- Micro Machines 2 Turbo Tournament
- FIFA International Soccer

I'm kinda blown away every time I boot up the system by how much I enjoy the visuals, and how well the games I own hold up gameplay wise.

Sonic 2 reminded me that save states were very often not a thing, though. Took me forever to get past Chemical Plant Stage 2, only to be then greeted by Aquatic Run for the trouble.. then inevitably back to the beginning once I kept losing! Still, it's all part of the charm and the game is a blast.

Chemical Plant has possibly the best music in the entire Sonic series
Besides Flying Battery zone in Sonic & Knuckles, of course

I loved this game as a kid, and still hold onto the vain hope that the Sega Channel exclusive levels will someday find their way to the internet

You could always play the Game Gear version which has 2 of the levels.

Why hide this in a spoiler? The world needs to know :p

Garfield: Caught in the Act has great graphics and animation, but the controls are not nearly as good as the visuals, and the game has some iffy design decisions at times... it's definitely a graphics-first game. It is fun though, yeah.

Is it just some levels, or was it a whole game that was Sega Channel-only and has not been seen again since?

Woah, hold up. There were exclusive levels?

There was 3 exclusive levels, though, as Jake said, 2 showed up in the Game Gear version, and i think one showed up in a PC port or something like that. It was not a fully unique game, just some cut content.

Also, Hydrocity is pretty gosh darn good too.

Honestly, I did not know much about the MD/Genesis version, though I've been aware of it since EGM previewed it in 1991. I've heard this game mentioned more in recent years but never caught my full attention. I suppose that is because the whole steam punk theme is not something I normally gravitate toward Now, I know there was not only a GBA remake of Steel Empire, but a 3DS remake as well. Pretty unusual for an obscure, early 90s shmup from Sega's 16-console.

Never played Steel Empire, but I love that JP artwork. Looks a lot like Amano's work, hard to tell without any people though.

Sometimes I forget that the Sonic games are actually pretty hard.

It's just, I grew up with them, played them regularly, so I got so good at them that they feel easy nowadays - because I know where the typical hold-ups are in the stages (well, for the most part) and how to not fall for them. I keep forgetting that that's not the norm...

It's a pretty good game, although I wish the bullet sounds didn't sound so wimpy. If you wanted to try it and have a 3DS, it's available on the E-Shop. And yeah, the Japanese artwork looks great.

I'm finding Sonic 2 harder than I remember.

Honestly though I'm viewing it as part of the charm. I mean on a larger scale, many of these era games are just on a totally different design ethos to modern games, so it's incredibly interesting to go back to. I'm sure you could whizz through Sonic 2 in an hour if you knew point-to-point how best to beat each successive stage. But not knowing and finding that stuff out has been really fun for me. I have played Sonic 2 before, but having never finished it and not playing it for decades, it might as well be my first time again. And it's a fascinating and refreshing experience (albeit one that isn't at all easy).

I sat down with Biohazard Battle again briefly this evening and you're all correct: Yellow ship is definitely the way to go! I breezed through the first few levels, finally getting defeated by the level 4 boss. I didn't have time to go through level 4 again, so I turned it off, but I'm feeling much more confident on the game now.

Finding time to game is so much harder now! Especially retro stuff, which takes a bit more commitment. I need games I can play one handed while cradling my daughter, haha

Can anyone recommend a decent rgb scart cable for a Mega Drive 2 with 32X thats sold from the UK? So many options with varied prices but I'm unsure which to go for. Any UK Gaffers with a cable recommendation?

Man got to the final stage in Biohazard Battle, then one stupid mistake and boom. Threw off my entire shooting zone. Stage 5 Stage 6 is awesome as its a battleship stage, and those are always pretty cool to see in a shooter. I gotta dive back in though, since getting that close lets me know I can do it.

The underwater stage just isnt fair at all though lol. You guys were right about the amphibian ship being one of the better ones. I just usually pick the one that looks like a manta swordfish.

I'm guessing Teknoman and I are the ones who beaten BioHazard Battle this month.

Congrats Teknoman BTW.

Thanks, you too!

You know, this is probably one shooter that might be easy to 1CC considering how the extend system is more forgiving than most. I dont think i've ever earned a score 1up in a shooter aside from this, or at least not as many.

Unfortunately I used 1 continue on the run that I actually beat the game, but a win's a win.

Also abuse the hell out of your invincible damage causing status if you do lose a life. Cause as much ship damage as possible and it could be the difference between beating a boss or losing another life.

Damn! Made it to the Final Stage tonight, but just couldn't seal the deal. Addictive game, and I think a couple more play throughs would get me over the top. Whether I'll have time before August 1st is another matter.

The battleship level is probably my favourite, what a sweet stage. Also, Stage 4 can screw right off, especially that boss which is impossible if you don't have Yellow weapon.

I liked what I played of BHB but got distracted by Star Trek... then Castlevania... I'm terrible at focusing on one game at a time.

Quick question: Where's the best place to buy an Everdrive for the MD/Genesis? Thinking of getting a Genesis, since I only have a slowdown Pal MD. I'm wondering if it works on both NTSC and PAL?

Just get one from the krikzz store directly. It works on both NTSC and PAL consoles, no region chips in the carts themselves on Mega Drive, just coded in region checks in the game code itself.

Oh, and why not just install some switches in the Mega Drive? Then you don't have to buy a Genesis machine.

Thanks for the info, should I buy the one with a cart or just make my own out of an old useless game?

I really have no soldering knowledge, the most intimate I get with consoles is simply opening them and cleaning them out.

Depends on whether you got the tools to make holes in the old cart to fit the reset switch and card slot or not. Make sure you do put it in a cart before using it in the console though, cause the cart slot flaps might strip some stuff from the PCB if not :p

Bear in mind possible sync issues on some PAL sets as I experienced when modded for 60hz. And fixing that (pure csync mod) is...harder than the region mod.

So I guess I need the Everdrive v2, seems to have a lot more features? Does it come with a MD or Genesis shell? Aka does it fit in a Genesis default?

The ones I've seen have a Genesis shell and fit right in to the system. Depending where you get one from, you may also need to get a SD card to put the ROMs on.
