Starbound |OT| Boundless...

so is the game actually considered feature-complete at this point, and if so, has it lived up to initial promise?

From all the news I've gathered over the years, the only thing that they had to scale back on was the unique story for each species. They had to merge them all into one storyline.

A lot of the stretch goal promises were all met. Novakids are in. Fossils are great. Starter pets are cool.

If the promise was Terraria in space, they far surpassed that. The game has way more assets, varieties, and themes in the base game. It also has a singleplayer which is lacking in Terraria.

Um.... okay. I mean, if you already bought it, the only cost to try it again is time and bandwidth spent downloading it again. If you were put off by the beta's terrain / biome generation, they've vastly improved that element.

There were two large combat updates while it was in beta, it feels a lot better now.
maybe I'll watch a youtube video or something. the biome generation was bad but really just the tip of the iceberg.

Now that I think about it I think I remember reading about some of it, like enemies no longer trying to go 'inside' you things like that.
To be fair I don't remember exactly what felt off about the combat, I just remember being somewhat disapointed after Terraria, maybe the lack of special weapons.

Here's two videos of the biggest updates:

Colony Update

Combat Update

Combat definitely feels a lot better and balanced. Weapons have a lot more variety. Monsters attack in a unique way that it's more about learning what type of monster it is so you can dodge its attack pattern.

Should be a 1.0 release trailer coming sometime today. If you can't wait, here's the last couple videos the developers have uploaded;

Combat Update
Colony Update

Yeah, they've upgraded combat so that enemies aren't just launching themselves at you now. It's much better.

There's also a ton of special weapons now; two-hand weapons (including guns) all have a special attack, there's staves that do some really cool spell-like effects, the fact that you always have access to a jump / dash / sphere tech gives you mobility options, etc. A large part of that may also be that Terraria had static weapons whereas Starbound's weapons are all procedurally generated.

Check out the combat update video I just linked =)

Edit: Beaten on the videos by WaterAstro =p

Very likely the typeface was a little cramped and needed to spread out a little. White-on-black is naturally harder to read as well. I went ahead and added some additional space between the letters, does it look any better now?

Thank you! That is much better.

Yes! Now I can play again. Played the beta at launch for a good amount of time, but stopped playing so that the game would be a different experience when I returned.

I'll be at work during release :(

Thankfully, I have all the mods I really like ready to roll:

Perennial crops - Love not replanting all those carrots and potatoes
Improved Containers - Love being able to rename my chests and boxes with the added bonus that every thing stays inside when I need to move them around.
Craftable Seeds - Saves time on making a large farm. On release I will make one planet a farm biome.

I need to grab the mod that allows you buy pets so I can load up on dogs and cats.

I bought this the day it came to early access, played for about two hours and said "Yeah, this is my jam". Then I turned it off and decided to wait for the release version to get the best experience. Looking forward to jumping in !

I basically did the same thing except I bought the more expensive version off their website so I've owned this from the very earliest point possible. It's been a long wait and I don't have a PC right now so that sucks.

Man oh man. I bought this game when it released. And now its finally finished.

Its really hard for me to go back, but the game was really great back when I was playing it every day. However, as far as I can tell, there is still no regular online multiplayer. You have to have a server and all that jazz, which is never ideal for me.

I will hop back in and mess around with it now that its finished and see whats going on.

Multiplayer in 1.0 will be as easy as clicking your friend's name in steam and choosing "Join Game"

I bought it in august 2013, but haven't played since that year. I remember the OST was awesome but ended up being repetitive (same songs over and over). Have they added new songs since 2013 ? Can't wait to play on the GAF server, i only played it alone.

Would be great also if the characters/save games was saved on the cloud..since i use different computers during the day. Is that possible (automatically)?

Hope controller support is added in soon. Playing games like this and Terraria with kb is not enjoyable for me :/

You don't get to keep the stuff that you collected in the beta, right?

Not sure/ It depends, when exactly did you stop playing the beta?

If you stopped playing early on (withing the first year and a half), so much had changed, that when you update, your save data would be incompatible.

If you've only been playing recently (last 6 months?) your stuff "should" carry over, since they had updated the game so that future updates wouldnt kill anything. The drawback being that if they had added any stuff since you left, you'd miss out on it, since your character would technically be "ahead" in the game.

---

So yeah, on another note, I'm chiming in here, I'm running the GAF server (which I always nickname the "unoffcial GAF server" for no real reason).

I'm currently trying to setup a separate computer to actually run the server, to free up my main. I'm also going to be at work when the update actually hits, so the server will definitely not be up today (I gave this warning back in the original Starbound thread, btw).

I did already setup a Discord, so all interested parties please join in with that. It would be great that any other GAFfers who are running servers, join the Discord too. The idea would be that if one server is full, you can easily find out if the others are running/full through the Discord. Would be awkward to actually use Discord chat in the actual game, but you can use Discord to voice chat, and we can create separate rooms for the various servers.

The other reason I'd like the various server admins to congregate there is that supposedly, there originally was talk of some sort of cross server functionality for the game (aka, easy jumping from one server to another while in-game).

Note: THEY HAVEN'T TALKED ABOUT THIS IN AGES THOUGH.

It could have been shelved, but it would be nice that if that was actually introduced into the game at some point, we would have already built up a network of GAF servers. Just thinking of doing a little future-proofing.

Anyway, when the server pops up, I'll make an announcement in this thread, Retro will update the info in the OP, and I'll make an announcement in the Discord. If you've played on the server before, you should aware of the house rules about it.

TLDR; server is mainly there so you can casually play with others -or- build stuff and show off to others. That last part, I might add, Retro will make you feel very, very insignificant. Seriously. He has a problem.

Soooo... until the server gets put up, in the meantime, play some single player, build up your character.

Oh, about the Discord, quote this post to get the invite link, the link is valid for the next 24 hours, btw.

Discord is great. My favourite thing about it is being able to scroll back to get the chat history and catch up on things that happened while you were offline (or if you joined late).

For all of you AZERTY keyboard players, make sure to check every secondary keybind if you change W and A to fit your keyboard.

In the last Unstable version I played It didn't change them automatically, nor does it warn you that another function is bound to the key.

I got stuck in the intro when you have to defeat the tentacle that stands in your way because of it, cause my Q key (to go to the left) was also my 'Throw item' key.
My sword was standing behind the tentacle, and I had nothing to hit her with xD
