Just started watching it, after hearing stratospheric praise for so many years.

Currently on 3rd episode. Its slowly hooking me up. I guess its still setting things up. But I am feeling potential already. Acting seems consistently great. The dialogue is sharp. I love the little funny scenes in between too. Will keep updating as I watch more.

Update 1:
On 11th Episode of Season 1 now. It has definitely grabbed my attention. The acting has been consistently great. It's really nice to see some characters evolve and change the perception you had of them. The smattering funny and camaraderie scenes is still pretty great. And of course, Omar is also great.
But it still doesnt have that- 'OMG I need to watch the next episode now!' feel. Maybe its not that kind of a show. I also feel lost sometimes in all the legal stuff. Rarely, but it does happen. Bo big deal, as I catch back up in next 2-4 minutes.
I am definitely sticking with it. It's a good show at the least, if not great just yet for me.

Quite simply the greatest tv show that has ever aired. Not just by a little bit either, by a large margin. The level of sociological depth on display is astounding. Its also the most perfectly cast show ever, only Better call Saul rivaling it there. Also season 5 is great don't listen to the cynics. Season 2 is GOAT.

I think Season 2 is the weakest one, even inspite of the zany central storyline from Season 5. First season takes a little bit to develop, you have to kind of watch on the confidence of knowing how great it is... those first 1 - 5 episodes are a little tough to get hooked, but then you get adequately hooked and the story progression is excellent.

While the Sopranos is my favorite show, I think the Wire is the best show.

Season 2 is the 2nd best season.

Edit: Congrats, OP. The Wire is one of the best tv shows and one of the smartest commentaries on US urban/political culture in mainstream media.

First episode didn't grab me completely, but somewhere along the first season I couldn't stop watching it until I was done with everything.

You'll be recognizing a bunch of classic gifs by the end of it. lol.

Just finished the first season yesterday and loved every minute of it and now I'm currently at the third episode of season 2 and man is it bad.I hope the third season is more like the first one and less like the second, cause the second one is just boring.

S2 starts off weak but you definitely do feel for the new characters. You're still on ep 2.

Greatest TV show ever made.

Those who think Season 2 was weak have no taste. Season 5 is the only season approaching mediocre quality. The other 4 all have an argument for being the greatest.

I'm actually on the third one,I edited my post.I hope you're right.I loved the first season.

Same thing happened to me.I had to watch the first episode twice, because I just couldn't watch it in one sitting, but after that,I really got into it.

Greatest show of all time for me. Love how every season takes a look at a different aspect of the city. Brilliant TV with brilliant and truly human characters that are really fleshed out. Wish I could re-watch it blind!

Season 2, while not at the level of season 4, is easily as good as the rest of the series and it gets far too much hate in my opinion.

Too many people watch it and compare it to season 1 and get frustrated because it is not more of the same. By the time they get to later seasons and see what Simon was going for, some of those people reevaluate, but others just remember those earlier feelings of disappointment.

I like how the city is the main character of the show, with each season focusing on a different side of it.

Yeah, probably the best TV show ever.

Season 2 is the 2nd best season.

Edit: Congrats, OP. The Wire is one of the best tv shows and one of the smartest commentaries on US urban/political culture in mainstream media.

I appreciate season 2 more and more every time I watch it. Right now it's neck and neck with season 4 for my favorite.

It's a great show, however it really shows its age in the first few seasons.

I'd also suggest that if you are a person who tends to watch shows with out captions on, turn them on. ESPECIALLY around season 3. My first time going through, I had to watch scenes over and over because I could not understand one of the characters at all.

The creator liked to think of the Wire as a novel, so the first few episodes of each season are like the opening chapters setting the scene for what's to come. So stick with it!

Season 2 is the 2nd best season.

S2 really clicked with me on a rewatch. I'd probably put it as my third favourite behind S4 and S1. Season 4 is perfection!

I'll second this, he does a great job at digging into the themes of each episode/ season.

String and weebey are awesome.

Bunk and Proposition Joe were my favourites.

Definitely the GOAT TV show. Kept me hooked from season one to five. Even the weakest season is some of the absolute best TV there is.

Been re-watching it in the past couple of weeks and that's my sentiment. S4 is easily the top choice for a lot of people, but personally I really felt for Frank and it's a lot more tragic know how it would end. Still, I think it starts off way too slow, relatively speaking; you are pretty much half way through the season before the units reforms. It also expanded the horizons of the show in a way that made later seasons possible, introduced Brother and laid the tracks down for S3, making that start a lot quicker. Also, Omar's courtroom scene probably one of the standouts from the show.

Took 4 episodes for me before it got its hooks in me. The whole series is fantastic, but Season 4 is on another level.

Best show ever

Absolutely agree. I think the shift to new characters/backdrop skews people's view because they want to see more of S1 storylines. By the time they realise the show isn't about that, their opinions are ingrained.

I mean, obviously not everyone has this happen, but I do think this is an element of it for sure.

Now what's the next step in your master plan?
I've said it before and I'll say it again. I judge people in what they think of the Wire. If you have negative feelings on it I think less of you for it.

How I envy you... I wish I could take it in for the first time all over again. You're in for an amazing treat. GOAT show, easily

And I wholeheartedly agree. Season 2 is so much better on a rewatch. It's probably my fave after 4/1 now.

Season 2 gets a ton of hate by first time watchers because it follows season 1 and is quite different. You go from gritty streets with shoot outs to corrupt cops and dock workers with a dysfunctional family thrown in. I've found most people come to appreciate the quality of it with each re-watch.

I thought season 2 was fine. I just didn't enjoy the arcs, and the focus on the docks and "The Greek" nearly as much as I enjoyed everything else on the show.

I just have season 5 to go. Is it as bad as people say? I feel like I've read that the storylines are kind of crap.

It's rough to get through. It's not so much that the story line is crap, it's the characters become so unlikable. Jimmy is pretty shite throughout the series, but for some reason in Season 5 he's just terrible.

Nah, it's still good just not as good as S4. There's a newspaper plot line which doesn't really work IMO, and the Mcnulty storyline turns into a complete farce which some people really don't like (I enjoyed it), but it's still The Wire y'know? The last few eps are outstanding.

I think it's just the newspaper and the McNulty plot that are less than stellar, but the streets are still on point. It also has some of the best moments in the series.

I started watching this last Spring and we binged watch it all the way to the end.

The Wire is the best TV show ever made along with Breaking Bad.

Damn good tv, I didn't feel the hype but I thoroughly enjoyed it. My favorite thing about the show is that it doesn't spoon feed you everything, somethings you'll have to connect on your own.

Edit: oh yea, it was cool seeing all the gifs in their original format.

GOAT, nothing even remotely close.

"Don't doubt me boy."

Favourite character changes on every watch but the last time i watched it it was Colvin

Omg, when he gets the security job at the hotel and can't arrest that guy. You aren't a police officer Mr. Colvin. His character arc is great. I wish he was in Season 5 more.
