Sony Issues Manual Copyright Strikes Against YouTubers Just For Discussing No Man's S

Sony has been harsh with handing out strikes for awhile now. My audience kept bugging me to do a full playthrough of UC4 and I didn't feel like risking my whole channel for one game.

Also the internet can be a small place sometimes, months ago I had gotten an email from Steven Thomas asking what he could do to help his channel grow momentum, and I told him that doing the same exact thing as every other big youtube channel wasn't going to work.

Guess he decided to start over with a channel solely doing No Man's Sky, which is honestly very risky as you've built up a subscriber base for a game that isn't out yet... but it's certainly working better than his last channel did.

This kind of thing tends to benefit smaller channels in the long run as now a bunch of major sites are reporting on it.

Is this some attempt to deny the leak ever happened? Yikes. Hopefully there's a miscommunication of some sort like Sean Murray says, because this is just not a good move at all. Especially since the game is out tomorrow.

Okay I don't see why Sony would do that but is this guy a drama queen or what?! Crying over a copy right strike? Give me a break its just YouTube!

Check out the article. He goes in depth about how the strike took away his ability to livestream, and he had been planning to do something for charity which he no longer can.

He got Sean Murray's attention which is a good thing, but these copyright strikes can seriously screw you over if Youtube is something you do for a living (not that uncommon nowadays).

Buy the game. You are supporting Hello more so than Sony. Sony has been doing some really strange things lately. Wonder what they are thinking. The main one being Rocket League online play with Xbox players.

Anyone smelling PS2/pre-launch PS3 era, arrogant and pompous Sony coming back?

Good way to try and kill hype and goodwill right before a release. Especially a good way to step all over any marketing message that might be going out to push the release of the game. Nice job Sony.

Like I'm sure Sony didn't just say lets take down all NMS videos. This could be something like their legal team doing this. So I imagine it'll get sorted.

But I hate seeing stuff like this no matter who it's from. Nintendo imo is the worst offender. But youtube invited this stuff with the whole contend ID crap.

But some of yall are reaching. I'm only worried about the youtube channels getting their rights back.

Some in here are already starting the narrative "arrogant Sony is back" or this is going to somehow diminish goodwill of the game. Largely this will have no impact on anything after a few days.

It's almost as if it's abusing a broken system by wrongfully placing the YouTuber in a position they can almost assuredly not defend while also risking losing their account and potentially their livelihood.

I don't think the PC version is anywhere... it is not out anywhere.. so all the footage is from PS4.

But it is still stupid..

the video says simply discussing it got effected so I am assuming not all even are showing video of the game out early. It just seems bizarre someone can claim copyright on something thats multi platform.

Copyright Holders have way too much power on Youtube. This is really fucked up.

This is all because Google doesn't want to pay a team of people to manually review this shit. At some point human intervention is NECESSARY.

Why are you focusing on the multiplatform stuff. That's irrelevant to who owns what rights.

because they shouldnt be able to do that? Like wouldnt it be shitty if MS took down a videos about a game that is also on PS4?

It just seems like to much power to me.

But they shouldn't be able to do that because of fair use, not because the game is on multiple platforms.
If Microsoft took down a Minecraft video captured on PS4 and it isn't covered by the common understanding of fair use then they would be well within their right.

Again: You're focusing on the wrong thing.

It shouldn't have to be sorted. It shouldn't have happened.

The whole contend ID thing and this would copyright thing on youtube is crap to begin with. You're right this shouldn't happen, but that doesn't mean it wont happen. It'll likely get sorted out based on Sean's tweet.

I know corporate sony can be this stupid, but I don't think it has anything to do with Hello Games

they mentioned it earlier on Sean´s twitter.

... and I'm glad to see it.

You do know this is actually a job for some people right? As in their only source of income.

On top of that, a copyright strike can limit what they can upload, impacting that quite a bit.

Yeah okay that makes sense if it's his source of income, that would be really shifty. If it's just a show though that he does on the side, then its overreacting.

From the same GI article in the OP

Thomas says he plans on continuing with the stream, but he won’t be able to use YouTube. A copyright strike means that you can’t live stream on the platform.

“Due to this strike I am now unable to livestream on YouTube, which hinders everything I've planned for the Make-A-Wish foundation fundraiser,” he explained. “If this is not corrected I will be forced to resort to using Twitch, however I do not have a fanbase and have never livestreamed on this platform so there is a high chance that the funds that could have been raised for the charity will greatly suffer.”

Drama Queen? Fuck dat charity?

People keep saying it was "probably a mistake".

Sony also issued a manual complaint against his video detailing his Patreon and the charity stream.

I mean, that's not like an accidental Content ID flag. That's someone very deliberately slapping the video down.

It's not something the developer wanted to happen, and Sony's probably going to stop now that it's bad press, but I'd hesitate to call that a mistake. More like "a choice Sony made they quickly regretted."

Without more information, it seems like a typical overreaction to blame Sony as a whole. This is almost certainly one overzealous asshole and not a corporate policy.

the article says some have been taken down for simply discussing the game I am pretty sure that is under fair use and they shouldnt have the power to do that.

Let's hope they can rectify their deliberate yet clearly boneheaded decision.

Sony's behaviour regarding NMS has been garbage, but the unfortunate truth is that there's 0 incentive for them to offer cross-play with Xbox. A big selling point for consoles is being able to play with your friends. Since PS4 is the market leader, the majority of purchases based on social circles are going to land in Sony's favour. Sony loses that advantage if they allow cross-play with the competition, and since Microsoft is far more aggressive in pricing and bundles ...

Seems Sony acted on their own accord without the dev's knowledge. Sony, wow, good job.

Right and that's why I said specifically that this is a fuck up on Sony part. Jesus one of the major reasons this game is so hotly anticipated is because of the YouTube people and other sites proping it up. They'll get this fixed.

I agree about the Hello Games part. But a mistake? I highly doubt it.

Well I'm sure House or layden didn't say. "take down every NMS video." I bet this some legal team stepping in and doing this. Shit like this has happened before and it has been a mistake. Maybe I'm wrong but I've never heard of Sony doing anything like this before.

It just again shows that youtube's system about this whole thing is crap. I mean look at Nintendo they'll take a video down at the drop of hat. We all hate it but that's just how thins work under this system.
