Been replaying MGSV lately... Man, it's so good! (Also: Your favorite weapons?)

Gameplay wise the biggest pet peeve I have is Triangle/Y being an action button for way too many things, I lost count how many times that screwed me over. Still, it's definitely the best in the series in that regard.

Nice post OP. Sort of make me want to fire it up again

The real secret is the game was always awesome, despite a few shortcomings in the story, and despite what the internet would have you believe. In a way I feel sorry for all those people out there that can't stand the game because the story wasn't really complete. Mass Effect 3 was pretty simliar in that regard. I spent 37 odd hours lapping it up. Just because the last last hour or so went to total shit, does it mean I should erase all enjoyment I had in the hours previous? I guess it just depends on whether you're a destination or journey type guy. Count me in the latter.

I sort of disagree with your sentiment on the open world suiting it though. Lots of nothing in between the interesting areas. It could have benefitted more from going the route of something like Dishonored or Alpha Protocol with large, open hub type levels to work your way through.

As for favorite weapons its been while since I've played so it'll be hard to be specific. I also mostly played non lethal, so rifles and the like, I'm not really sure. If I ever needed to shoot shit up in a mission I'd take along D-Walker. Or let Quiet kill everything. Othewise it was fun goofing around with things like the rocket fist and the inflatable dummies

Quiet's great if you're not planning on taking anybody back and want to go loud. Otherwise, I usually went with DD.

I remember working my way up to this guy I really wanted. High rank and a good set of skills. I grabbed him, and Quiet shot the guy in my arms. Damn you, Quiet.

This is why you get her a tranq rifle stat.

i've been replaying the PC version every now and then using the infinite heaven mod. you can do so much with it. random patrols in free roam, random skull attacks, change enemy preparedness and equipment, OSP, instant on foot deployment (no more long helicopter rides), and more. if any of you have MGSV on PC, get IH immediately

as for favorite weapons, i'm kinda boring and just stick with the standard tranq/assault rifle but upgraded. i used to use tranq snipers a lot too, but they made things way too easy so i've since stopped using them

This game just gives me feels, man

A nighttime thunderstorm in the lush jungles of Africa...

The warm glow of Afghan ruins, baking in the afternoon sun...

A soothing orange sunset at Mother Base...

Chilling in the AAC at night, bathed in the red lights...

I especially love Afghanistan. Not usually into arid regions in videogames, but it's so varied and gorgeous in MGSV!

Thread just reminds me of how this game had the makings of the GoaT. But it was not to be

The gameplay mechanics were fantastic, the AI systems in place, the gameplay loops, the permanence of player action, the mother base building, the in-game economy ... all good, but all with grave shortcomings in various ways. could've been truly great.

Only gameplay shortcomings I can think of:

- Vehicles could feel a bit better to drive
- Helicopter rides should be skippable
- Wish we could fast-travel between LZs
- Can't remember the names of most bases (lol)

At the end of the day, I'm still having more fun with this game, for many more hours, than any comparable title.

you can somewhat mitigate this one by simply cutting down on your heli usage. stay in the field as long as possible, extract from hotzones by land and just hop from mission to mission on foot until it forces you back to mother base for whatever reason. when you need to go back to the acc, do it from the pause menu and skip the pickup.

i played about 100 hours of the game at launch, then a few weeks later deleted my save and started again from scratch. what made me love the game even more the second time around is to focus on the missions and bonus objectives as much as possible, don't grind, don't go crazy with overleveled gear, only return to MB when the story forces you, and only go out of your way to do sideops if they give you a practical reward (mb soldiers, gunsmith, blueprints, etc). take your time in the missions, sometimes its more interesting not to make your move right away and let things play out for a while. exploring, and scouting and evesdropping gives you actual, tangible rewards besides a letter grade.

despite being really disappointed in a lot of things, missing content, the occasionally bizarre cutscene direction/dialogue , etc... its still one of my favorite games ever made. even the story comes off to me as being far greater than the sum of its parts, and in retrospect its an incredibly clever and fitting end to the series even as the moment to moment narrative feels disjointed and anticlimactic.

My favorite weapon was my custom built patriot replica.

Stupidly inaccurate but up close it just obliterated almost everything.

Game needed more OSP missions. That one late game mission felt super refreshing.

I liked the G44 Assault Rifle. This weird AUG-G11-FAMAS hybrid thing spoke to me:

gHpc8f5.jpg

haha I did both of these. Most of the guns were pretty samey so in the end I always went with whatever looked the coolest. iirc there was one semi auto sniper that you could outfit with a drum magazine that was fun to use

Good to see some MGSV love. Probably my game of the generation.

Still logging in every day, building my FOB.

Haha, Thats some commitment. I beat the game a few weeks after launch, mucked around with FOB stuff a bit and haven't played since. FOBs seemed to be getting a little too micro transactiony. As much as I love the game I'm not sure I was prepared to shell out for virtual insurance for virtual products.

Funny you should mention this. I've been playing MGSV again since 3 days ago. Game is superb. I love tranq snipe rifle.

I want to get Raiden so bad but I'm not patient enough to grind S ranks.

Would be cool if we do get a complete edition, Ground Zeroes feels as polished as TPP. I didn't notice how different GZ was until recently. Still felt great at the time.

Another question: What is everyone's favorite outfit?

Previously, I was shirtless, wearing the gray bandana, tiger-stripe pants and gold arm. Now I wear the gray arm and sneaking suit from GZ, since its description makes it sound the most comfortable. :)

What do heli flares do exactly? Call in the chopper at any location?

Man this game was so good, and I've been thinking of going back to it lately. It makes me wonder what it truly could have been if Kojima had the flexibility to do everything he wanted with it. The gameplay and the essence of MGSV is near-perfect.

The story though, what I was most looking forward to, was super underwhelming and ended so abruptly. It was clear from the
numerous recycled missions
that the last part of the game was rushed out the door. Such a bummer. But the game plays better than any stealth action game I've ever played, and better than any game that's come out in the last few years, period. So it's got that going for it.

Stealth suit is just too fly. Reminds me of Solidus a bit.

When I got in Demon mode I hated it. Olive green looked the best with it.

In hindsight, I really enjoyed the game for what it was. Had a convoluted story, but its outstanding stealth mechanics and equipment variety more than made up for that.
There was just so much flexibility on how one could approach a mission. Completely ghost it or go in loud. Totally up to you.

My favorite companion was D-Dog, especially when you unlock his equipment that can holster tasers. Quiet useful for when you were farming for A+ or above ranking soldiers for Mother Base. Sorry Quiet, but this little champ can take out multiple soldiers on my command, and doesn't have to circle the perimeter before marking all known enemies within it. In addition, once soldiers start to wear helmets, Quiet isn't able to take them out in one shot, which can immediately place the camp/base in alert mode. D-Dog can bypass the armor with a knife to the jugular. LOL

I'm actually one of those people who is looking forward to playing MGS: Survive. Come at me, NeoGAF!

EDIT:
I love how you can use the water pistol to quietly fry electronics like the comms equipment.

I didn't know you could do that! I remember knocking down a telephone pole while it was raining in Africa, and Snake felt out of the jeep unconscious from getting electrocuted

I'm not at home now so I can't get any of my screenshots, but after I had basically done everything I made some weapons that were horribly glitched. I should actually open Phantom Pain again and see if you're still able to actually make weapons like that.

Stuff like this:

Those were my favorite weapons.

The recycled missions would've been there regardless. They're entirely optional -- you can trigger new story missions by simply doing side ops instead -- so they're just a bonus.

I beat the game without touching any of them. I appreciate their inclusion, though, and will try them when I want a challenge.

You could also use it to stun the parasite unit (that or change weather to rain) to make the
airport encounter
easier.

And you can literally defeat
man on fire with it (though you have to shoot him a lot)

Me neither... So I opted to spend 5 minutes each day to log in, collect freebies, and deploy soldiers to get more staff. It's gotten me all 4 FOBs and at least lvl 110 on each staff team without spending a dime.

It's become second nature. I might do this until I stop using PS4. lol

Another question: What is everyone's favorite outfit?

i love the gz sneaking suit, and its probably my favorite variant in the series, but honestly i think my favorite outfit is just the default camo. i don't think any other videogame character has rocked a set of generic military fatigues as well as venom, and the red arm and scarf really make it work for me

I just learned the other day that you can press triangle while crawling to hug the ground even tighter and make yourself less noticeable. Might be playing dead.

this always seemed like something that should have been taught to the player in the prologue when you were literally playing dead in a pile of bodies

I'm torn. If you want to unlock the higher tier items, you absolutely have to treat the game as a kind of Pokemon, gotta catch 'em all, tranq head-shot and extract everyone kind of game.

And that sucks.

But, if you open an already-completed save and repeat the missions, you can go about using all the lethal weapons, with so many gadgets at your disposal.

And that's fun.

Basically, I wish the research and mother base expansion didn't require (literally) thousands of fultoned personnel and (literally) days worth of upgrades. No more than 150 total to max the game, with only a minority of personal you ever encounter ever being viable... Or, quite frankly, remove the staff acquisition element completely, and focus on building ties with a predetermined military force. The game could have been infinitely more fun and fully replayable if you could approach the game with all options legitimately at your disposal, without developing a necessary phobia of killing any enemies because they could be the tipping point for a rank 79 medical bay.

The way it is now, I have no favorite weapons, because I'm punished for using anything other than a tranq. gun.

This us my main gripe with the game. Litterally felt like I had to play the game a certain way to get upgrades. While the gameplay was so open and varied and awesome. But it was OCD with fultoning

My bright pink sniper tranq with zebra stripes, shit got me through most all of that game alone, that and quiet with her sniper tranq, we were putting fools to sleep left and right

I've honestly been considering replaying MGSV myself lately. I really think MGSV has some of the greatest gameplay I've ever experienced. I don't know if I will actually go back to it any time soon just because I have so many other games to play, but I did consider the idea of playing with a gimmick like "naked" missions where I can only bring a camo and that's it, anything else I need I have to find in the mission. MGSV's just such a strange game. In many ways it was a huge disappointment to me, but its gameplay is so absolutely fantastic that I almost don't care about the other shortcomings.

Favorite weapons... I really enjoyed the loadout I used for Metallic Archaea and Sahelanthropus, pure explosive nonsense because that was the only way I could figure out how to even deal with that awful Skulls boss fight. Brought in a grenade launcher (I think it was the Isando?), the FBMR rocket launcher, and the Zorn hand cannon while also stocking up on a ton of grenades and the battle armor. The FBMR was probably my favorite weapon in the game really, I did a few missions with "perfect stealth" where I basically sniped a base from really far away with rockets and then strolled into the deserted, nuked compound to get what I need and finish the mission. No actual alerts or being discovered, so I still got the emblems for being stealthy rather than for being lethal.

i actually don't agree at all with the general sentiment that the game is only fun when you have 'tons and tons' of high level gear to play around with.

when replaying, i found i enjoyed the game a lot more when i had extremely limited equipment, had to improvise more in the field, and needed to make more careful tactical decisions based on gmp and available resources. if anyone asked me, i'd say its only really worth extracting soldiers with the maximum grade in a category for your current heroism level, or those with skills only attainable in specific missions

I really enjoyed the loadout I used for Metallic Archaea and Sahelanthropus, pure explosive nonsense because that was the only way I could figure out how to even deal with that awful Skulls boss fight.

the skulls have a really, really easy counter when they attack that leaves them stunned long enough to unload everything you have. the airport is such a huge, complex area that its incredibly easy to split them up and deal with them mostly one-on-one

My only gameplay gripe is that you can't carry two pistols. I usually go with tranq gun, tranq sniper, assault rifle but I'd rather use a .45 than the assault rifle. I also think it would look better, Snake looks kind of goofy to me running around with two big guns.

I'll never not love MGSV even with all the damage Konami did to it and its other shortcomings, because like OP said, the game plays incredibly well and it's so much fun because of that. I just love how it all feels, and not just moving around, stealthing my way through bases, and capturing all the sheep I can, but the world and its atmosphere just feel amazing. Hell, I get nostalgic just thinking about the game sometimes.

Sadly, in most games, I barely change my weapons from whatever it is that I find myself comfortable with. I also try my best to stealth most of the time, so I barely bring anything that's lethal. Favourite weapon, however, is my custom RENOV-ICKX sniper rifle, just like my waifu's. Speaking of Quiet, I was surprised to feel a genuine love and attachment for the character. It was upsetting and painful to play through A Quiet Exit... Anyway, yeah, I love the shit out of my sniper rifle. Damn thing's gotten me through so much shit and it still amazes me every once in a while. Earlier this month, I was just messing around and went to infiltrate that big outpost where the Burning Man's body was, and this fucker saw me as he was climbing up a ladder (I thought the ladder was facing the other way...) and holy fuck, I managed to snipe him right in the head thanks to Reflex Mode. His head was barely visible, but there was the tiniest spot that let me shoot him. Fucking awesome.

Another weapon I really love--well, it's a tool, not a weapon, but still--is the Stun Arm. Rank 3. Fully charge that shit and watch Venom Snake do some beautiful anime magic. The Rocket Arm's cool too, although sometimes it's annoying when I keep going in circles trying to hit one soldier but failing to do so.

I also really enjoy messing around with Ocelot's revolver. I don't know if it's a glitch or done on purpose, though, but the thing doesn't have an image for me. Not when I'm on the field, have it equipped or otherwise, nor in the development screen.

Another question: What is everyone's favorite outfit?

Previously, I was shirtless, wearing the gray bandana, tiger-stripe pants and gold arm. Now I wear the gray arm and sneaking suit from GZ, since its description makes it sound the most comfortable. :)

I caved and bought the Snake Eater jungle fatigues. (Although, I was also testing whether the NA store's DLC would work on my R3 game--it did.) I love it so much. Even though I know it's not the best thing to use everywhere, I keep using it anyway. Sometimes, I also mess around and go on a mission Naked just to have matching outfits with Quiet, hahaha. Before either of that, though, my favourite's probably the Ground Zeroes suit since it looks so good and works similarly to the Diamond Dogs sneaking suit.

Hmm, I also noticed that Ocelot's revolver doesn't have an image on the R&D screen. But you're saying ti doesn't appear on the field, either? So does that mean you don't see it in Snake's hands even when he's aiming it? (I haven't tried it yet — I think it's still in development.)

BONUS QUESTION: What are your favorite weapons to use? There are simply so many of them! I'm trying to develop everything, but I don't know what to actually use. MGSV nails the feeling of firearms and provides a lot of variety on that front. It's a bit overwhelming, so I'm open to recommendations.

My favourith weapon was called Quiet.

Other than her, it was a non lethal sniper riffle, dont remember the name of the model, but u had to build some of the same model that was lethal, berore the non lethal version unlocks.
It was semi-auto you could shoot multiple fast shoots with zoom in with almost no recoil. Was custom made with silencer and all in black. I was a king in the night putting everyone to sleep with that one :D

Hers a pic:

BTW im still amazed how this game looks being open world, 1080p and 60fps on a PS4. Such a shame the FOX Engine will stay in konami hands for crap like MG Survive.

Oh, no, you misunderstood. I just meant the image, even when I have it equipped or if it's just in my inventory. It shows up in-game, on Snake's hand.

---

Since some people have talked about it, yeah, Quiet's really OP and I love that about her. It's ridiculous, yes, because we can just send her to an outpost and she'll take care of it all while we just Fulton her victims, but it's fucking awesome. I really enjoy that about the Buddy System, though. We don't control her, but at the same time, we have such a wide range of control over her actions. If I feel like taking on the entire outpost myself, or whatever she's left for me, I can just tell her to stand down. I can have her provide cover fire then quickly move her to another position so they can't find her while I'm also tranquilizing the soldiers from afar with my own sniper rifle. Then there's the Sinful Butterfly. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) Oh, and the grande ricochet shot, too! When I would do those side missions involving a chopper, I wouldn't bother with a rocket launcher and just brought grenades and Quiet with me. It didn't always end well, though, cause the choppers eventually got tougher and I would run out of grenades and didn't have the Sinful Butterfly unlocked yet... And I could never get the Sleep Grenade ricochet to work properly... *pouts*

D.D.'s fantastic too. I love the little guy, although it sucks that he grew up so quickly. It's so cute and awesome to be stealthing my way through an outpost with my wolf-dog and taking out two soldiers at a time. I felt awful whenever he got hurt, though... I'd go Rambo on anyone who hurt him or Quiet. I'm still not sure whether I like that they no longer let Buddy's die, though. I'm happy because I don't want them dead, but it also feels a little cheap. Then again, I still have a sense of urgency and protectiveness.

One thing I didn't like, though, which I feel is kind of dumb, is how dismissing a Buddy immediately bumps your bond with them down by one rank. I mean, Jesus, guys. I'm just trying to protect you.
