Xbox One S Thread: The S is for Sexy

There are millions of whiny 5-year olds on Earth, and I AM THEIR KING.
Guys, I am trying to convince myself to buy it; I play in a 4k monitor.

Is the framerate performance gain only for titles when played in 1080p? Is the performance gain also for 4k?

Are there performance gains for Quantum Break while playing in 4k?

It upscales games to 4K so no performance drop.
Quantum Break tears a lot less and holds 30 far more often.

All I needed to hear. I will be packing up my second Xbox One soon, and moving the Elite to the living room; I do most of my gaming on the bedroom.

Got my 500GB S in the mail today and am currently setting it up. All these patches are going to suck on a 1Mb/s connection, but it is what it is. I have a question about the sounds the system makes though. I know it's supposed to be a relatively quiet console compared to some others, and so far it is, but it makes this sort of constant quiet fluttery noise (best I can describe it) that I don't usually hear in other consoles. I'm used to just hearing a steady fan noise or something similar. Is it the same for everyone else?

Jumping in to say I have the same issue, and it seems there are a good amount of people online with this as well. I'm currently kind of on a holding pattern... it doesn't bother me because I wear headphones almost all the time while gaming, but if it gets worse I'll think about requesting a replacement.

Yea my fan has a whir to it as well, the only reason it doesn't bother me is because it's only audible within a ~1 meter range. Farther than that it's inaudible.

It sounds "tickly" to me and it's consistent, but it is significantly quieter than my PS3 Slim and even more so to my 360 S

Mine does the same. Your only real option is to sit far away or put your console in a well ventilated cabinet. It really is a cool looking console.

Oh yeah, I'm just trying to give my 2cents since it was a bit jarring listening to it the first time since it doesn't sound as "airy" as other consoles.

But I do love it and it's well ventilated

Hey BoneGAF, I might be getting an S for Christmas and need some advice on something. I already own a PS4 and will continue to buy third party titles there, so I'm really getting this thing for exclusives and backwards compatibility. The thing is, even in my 360 days, the only Xbox exclusive that I had interest in was Halo. I was younger with narrow tastes and ignorant to trying new things though. I've really thought about what games would make me feel justified in getting another console, and so far I've come up with:

Halo 5 I've actually played this at my sister's house and I really like what I played.
Halo MCC I'm aware that it's still broken but I've never played Halo 2 and really want to.
Sunset Overdrive Also played this at my sister's, loved what I played.
Forza Horizon 2 I've heard really good things about this. I love just driving around in games like GTA so if I can do this here as well as race then sweet.
Forza Horizon 3 See above
Forza Motorsport 6 Just so I can have a basic racer really.
Sea Of Thieves Rare. Pirates. Shared-works multiplayer. Want.
Ori and the Blind Forest This always stood out to me as an interesting and unique part of MS' lineup, and because of that, I feel like I'm being called to it.
Dead Rising 3 I like the idea of open world zombie games (Dying Light was one of my favourite games of 2015), and this looks like quite a bit of fun. Being able to improvise your own weapons seems like a really fun idea.
Gears Of War (not any specific one) Basically a friend scolded me for never playing a Gears game before and now I feel the need to try one.

Do you guys think that is enough to warrant getting an Xbone in the near future? This only includes games that are either already out or are coming out in the near future, and I'm thinking about Crackdown 3 and ReCore. I'll get Gold as well so I guess I can expect a good lineup of freebies as well as being able to play my 360 games without having to pry the tray of my broken 360 open to put a game in.

Also, does anyone know if the Halo bundle is coming to Europe or if there will be a 500GB Forza Horizon 3 bundle?

Thanks :)
More than warrants mere interest, obviously you have looked inot it a fair bit. I'd say go for it.

I'm an owner of both systems, and after reading a few 'I need convincing' posts in this thread I will just collectively reply that I think it's a great system to own, period. The exclusives it has are terrific, but also I urge you not to think of it only as an exclusives machine. You'll quickly find that the performance compared to PS4 issue is overblown, so you shouldn't be afraid to take advantage of sales on 3rd party games, free games with gold, etc. I think it's holding onto the belief that you'll never touch an Xbox game outside of exclusives that holds many people back, and in that case you're only selling yourself short.

I have a very dumb question.

If I connect my controller with a usb cable while using regular AAs, the battery will still deplete normally right?

It might blow up. It might try to charge the non-rechargeable batteries.

Don't non-rechargeables catch fire if you try to charge them? Or do you mean the controller will know not to charge them?

The controller will only charge them with the charge kits (there is a special handshake of sorts).

Inside of those kits are rechargeable batteries, but the casing itself tells the pad it's cool to charge.

The annoying thing is that this means it's not plausible to get the pad to charge my eneloops via USB.

Oh you are actually serious

http://news.xbox.com/2013/06/06/xbox-one-controller-feature/

The article mentions that the controller turns off its wireless radios to conserve battery when wired.

It doesn't try to charge the batteries, it just shuts off the wireless receiver.

I was going to try really hard not to play the rumored Forza Horizon 3 demo since I know I am buying it anyways, but it being the very first HDR enabled game, it is a bit too much temptation to give it a shot to see how HDR impacts the game. I hope HDR is enabled in the demo so I can do proper testing.

I played the shit out of FH2's demo and didn't regret it or felt like I was burned out on it one bit.

Amazon has lowered their prices today on these, assumingly to match the Target deals.

Not the 500GB one yet though.

So the 1TB is going for $314 with Madden.

Thanks guys, looks like it's settled. :) Oh and I totally forgot to put Rare Replay on that list, I definitely want that.

If you only play one Gears of War game, make it the third one and play it on your 360 for the more consistent framerate. GoW2 has its moments but GoW3 has the best story and it plays the best.

Hmm? I'm nearing the end of my play through on Xbox One and outside of a handful of drops it's been fine.

It's alright but it's a little better on 360 if he doesn't mind sticking a library card into his disk drive to pry it open (I had to do that with my Xenon before I got a S).

The S is already getting discounts? Here's hoping for some good Black Friday deals.

I guess I'll have to see at the time haha. 4 could end up being a good way to launch into the series, or one of the others could go free on Gold.

I think they've all been free on GWG already. If you preorder 4 you get all the 360 games as a bonus which is a pretty good deal.

edit: Don't even need to preorder it, just buy the game before the end of the year and they're yours.

I'm almost tempted to get one of these just for the BC and 4k Blu rays. I'm thinking we will see some nice Black Friday deals. I just want to play red dead.

If you haven't already, consider downloading Killer Instinct. One of my favourite games on the system. As someone who hadn't really played a fighting game before, KI does a fantastic job of teaching the basics in the dojo mode. Plus it's a free download, so you can't really go wrong just trying it out.

I'd recommend Rare Replay and Quantum Break too. Some people feel mixed about the latter, but I loved it.

Welp, I bit on the Amazon deal for the halo bundle, $269. I recently sold my day one edition for $185, so I figured its not putting out that much more. It will be nice to have around as a 4k bluray player and to stream 4k media.

Also this one can fit on my desk (finally an xbox console that can do that), so I'll hook it up to my monitor. I just built a new 6600k, 1070 PC. Not sure I really needed an S, but the deal was great and like I said, sold my previous one for a decent amount I feel.

I'll think about selling the S when we are closer to scorpio. For now, its too far out from next holiday to wait for scorpio only.

Caved in and bought one since target had them 10% off. Picked up Mad Max 4K Blu-ray as well and I loved seeing all the little details I didn't catch before.

It's a fantastic looking console and the controller feels great, too. Makes me wonder how the designer is going to top it for Scorpio.

Well the guy who designed the S is Andrew Kim, here is his blog which i've been following for years.

He certainly has an eye for design, so if he's involved with the Scorpio i'm sure it'll look nice.

Hey all, likely trading in my Xbox One for the S. Some quick questions that may Google skills have failed me on...

Is is just as "tall" (measurement from the base of the unit to the top) as a PS4? Less tall? My PS4 juuuust fits under the space between my TV and the cabinet it sits on.

Can I plug in my external HDD that I used on the Xbox One and everything will show up as normal?

Thanks!

It vents out the top so if you're setting it up horizontally it will need more space above it than a PS4.

Just 4 more days and Vizio replaces my current TV with another model to see if the blackout video issue stops.
Fingers crossed.

With that said ran some errands with my wife yesterday. One of them meant I had some time to kill in Best Buy. Besides being able to check out the PSVR in person which was a nice surprise, I of course found myself in the Television section.

It is going to take all of my willpower not to pick up a new TV even if my replacement Vizio works. HDR really does make a big difference. The only good news is the TV's I thought clearly had the better picture were all also over $2499 each, and that is just way out of the range I can realistically spend on a new TV. All of the new OLED LG's looked great (and forget about it, most of them were over $3000). I forget the exact model but there was also Samsung SUHD model as well. The KS9000 perhaps? And there was one Sony model that really looked great too. The 930D If my memory serves me correct. Truth is I was not paying too much attention as I just knew it was a rabbit hole I would not want to go down. And I am sure if I did start researching any of the models I saw there would be pros and cons for all of them.

Once prices start coming down, and once more content takes advantage of HDR, I will be diving in. For now I will settle with my non HDR TV, that is of course unless the replacement from Vizio does not work. Then I may be taking advantage of a interest free payment plan from Best Buy.

Cool. If it is shorter or the same size as a PS4 I'm golden as there's nothing but open space where I'm intending to place it.

Another question, does the connection of the controller drop as often as it does on the original model (which isn't often, but enough for me to notice and be disappointed)?

I have another general Xbox One question. I have terrible bandwidth, so I have to let the system download game updates overnight to make any progress. I'm pretty sure I did the Fallout 4 update the first night and it went fine. However, last night the system seemed to shut off after about an hour of downloading after I went to sleep. I let it download a bit before I went to work, and left it on, but again it seemed to only download about an hour's worth. I checked my power settings and it was indeed set to shut off after one hour of inactivity, but shouldn't a download override that setting?

No.

You also waste a lot of power by letting it idle.

Just put your console in instant-on and the download will resume.

I'm confused, are you saying there's a setting wherein it can download without being fully on? I really have no choice in the matter given my bandwidth. It's going to take several overnight downloads to finish everything, and that doesn't even include downloading the entirety of MCC.

I tested with Orochi 3, the games will download while it's "off" with instant on mode, left it overnight and it finished in the morning

Hell you can even hear the console humming while its "off"

Double-tap the Xbox button to open the guide.
Select Settings > All settings.
Select Power mode & startup. Make sure Power mode is set to Instant-on, and:
For automatic updates, select Keep my console, games & apps up to date.
To turn off your console when idle, select an option under Turn off after.
Make sure that your Xbox is set to instant on mode and it'll download games in standby mode. I download most of my games overnight because my internet is slow and it works fine. Keeps the console & installed games up to date too.
