What is Treasure's best game?

Since Treasure is pretty much done making games at this point (a damn shame it is). I find it necessary to go back through their history and look at their greatest accomplishments.

As for my answer? Sin & Punishment: Star Successor

A fucking amazing ride. My God, where do I even start with this game? Do I start with its simple, yet difficult to master gameplay system? Do I start with the plethora of amazing boss battles? Or do I start with showing you an amazing display of high level gameplay footage? My first journey into stage 3 was the experience of a lifetime.

But who can describe this game better than Gaf's own sprsk?:

I finally got to play the game in a non work related setting.

9 hours later I need to take a shower and I don't really know where I am.

HOLY FUCKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK

I thought Uncharted 2 was going to be this year's thrillride game to play, but man, I was wrong. I was way wrong. Sin and Punishment 2 grabs a hold of your dick and won't let go until it's done with you. Every level is just jam fucking packed with the coolest shit you will see in a game this year, maybe even this decade (lol, sure why not?). Just when you thought Treasure has run out of ideas, they totally fucking flip the switch and say "oh yeah, now you've gotta do THIS crazy shit!" and you're like "FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK!!!!!" but somehow you make it through and you are left for only a brief moment thanking your lucky stars until shit goes absolutely nuts again.

Every encounter in this game, EVERY SINGLE ONE, is just so fucking clever. Fuck, I mean levels 3 4 and 5 may be my favorite levels in any game ever. 1 and 2 are awesome, but they are like the appetizer to the biggest, juiciest prime rib you will ever eat.

I just put the controller down, I can't really form a complete sentence, I wish I could spoil it all butttt ffuuuuuuck this game is soooooooooooooooooooooo gooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooood.

I will quote this post for as long as I live.

After S&P2, I'll give Gunstar Heroes the #2 spot.

Treasure is definitely in my top 5 dev teams, it's a shame they just disappeared off the market. They were incredible.

What is Treasure's best game to you guys?

I was coming here for this exact answer. Good job OP.

Really hoped Star Fox was given to them instead. Hope they'll bounce back and come back somehow for something great again.

I should really play that game again. I'm much more familiar with the first Sin and Punishment.

As for my favorite Treasure game, it's definitely Ikaruga. It's a great shooter that doesn't play like anything else on the market. Not too long, not too short. Unlike Radiant Silvergun, it can be played as a straight shooter or you can do gown the rabbit hole into the puzzle-style chaining system (RS punishes the non-chaining player).

And god almighty, Ikaruga bleeds style. So beautiful. I'm forever grateful that we finally got a PC port.

Guardian Heroes or Gunstar Heroes

Pie and Beans

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.
Gunstar Heroes or Dynamite Headdy.

Simple, filled with fantastic creativity, beautiful.

Gunstar Heroes is really great, but my personal favourite of theirs has to be the first Sin & Punishment. Ikaruga ain't bad either, though.

Since I've been replaying Radiant Silvergun and going through a lot of Treasure games, my list goes as follows:

1. Sin and Punishment Star Successor
2. Ikaruga
3. Gunstar Heroes Hard Mode
4. Gradius V
5. Guardian Heroes
6. Radiant Silvergun
7. Sin and Punishment
8. Alien Soldier
9. Astro Boy: Omega Factor
10. Bangai - O

It has to be Gunstar Heroes for me, i mean its still just damn fun to play. Ikaruga might be second. I did love Astro Boy Omega Factor too, but i've never revisited so i'm not sure how it holds up.

I'm not sure I have a favorite yet. I've played quite a few Treasure games, but I never really put that much time into any one game for me to consider the game "conquered". That said, I only very recently played Gunstar Heroes for the very first time and was kind of blown away by it. Also back in the day I used to play Guardian Heroes all the time with a friend, that game was just pure fun on a disc, loved the multiple routes, that added so much replayability.

Of the ones I own, I really need to put more time into Sin & Punishment 2, Ikaruga, Bagai-O (DS) and Alien Soldier.

/edit: oh yeah and Gradius V. I suuuuck at that game.

Ugh, don't even remind me. I love Platinum, and SF0 was solid, but damn, if Treasure was on board, my gawd.

Astroboy: Omega Factor - if you haven't played this, you should.

I will when SEGA gets off their ass and releases it on the eShop :p

Either OP's choice or Alien Soldier.

Alien Soldier feels like the culmination of 2D sidescrolling run 'n gun action, resulting in something that seems simple on a surface level but has such deep mechanics (especially for a controller with only three face buttons) and so many memorable encounters requiring the mastery of all of them. It's shame it didn't get much attention back in the day, because I do think it should be as remembered as fondly as Gunstar Heroes at the very least.

Alien Soldier has an issue where you kinda need to die to progress at times because the boss could be immune to what tools you have on hand. The Core Mechanics are pretty sweet and the boss fights themselves are pretty cool (Especially on Superhard) but that one feature stings a bit and is something that Gunstar Heroes definitely doesn't suffer from.

I like the idea of splitting Gunstar Heroes normal and Hard Mode.

Seven Force makes a hell of a difference.

I'm gonna have to say the original Sin & Punishment. I had a great time becoming proficient at that game, and it's short enough to play the whole game on a rainy day whim.

I have Star Successor as well, but I haven't put in the time it deserves.

I saw Sin and Punishment 2 in a Walmart bargain bin only 3 days ago, discounted to $15. It's probably been sitting there for years, too.

I hate people.

I don't really like Normal Mode Gunstar heroes, I'd argue it's probably one of the more boring treasure games to me (Then again, a "boring" treasure game is one of the craziest shit in gaming anyway. I got hype as a kid when Orange freaking rode the Blades of a helicopter just to smash your shit.). But Hard mode makes it a masterpiece.

Shit, what a fucking impossible question.

My vote is a toss-up between Mischief Makers, Astro Boy: Omega Factor, and Sin & Punishment Star Successor.

Ikaruga is one of my favourite games, period. It is absolutely phenomenal in all aspects of game design. It's still amazing to me that they were able to coax so much complexity out of such a simple concept. Plus, it has one of the all time great scores in gaming, perfectly synced to on-screen action.

Radiant Silvergun would come in second for me. It's just such a creative game, and its maximalist approach is a nice contrast to the restraint of Ikaruga. Some of the set pieces are incredible, and I love the feeling of boss fight after boss fight after boss fight.

Gradius V would be my third choice. It really shows what they could pull off on 'modern' consoles, and it really left me wanting more. I was a big Gradius fan from back in the day, and I really enjoyed how they kept aspects of the originals while updating the mechanics in some really clever ways. This one loses a couple of marks for the unskippable cutscenes though.

I wish all three were remastered and playable on the current generation of consoles, but given the last news about Treasure, I'm not holding my breath...

I brought it for $20. And that was after missing the chance to get it at Best Buy for $5. #partoftheproblem

I'm good on Hard Mode until Smash Daisku's stage.

FUUUUUCK THAT LEVEL

I've never really had this scenario happen to me, as I'd never have more than two of the same type or style of weapon equipped at once,.

I'm pretty good until that SHMUP level. Definitely my least favorite part of the game.

It's definitely possible to not run into that situation, but I think that Bosses should only heavily resist weapons rather than outright be immune to them. It somewhat limits creativity I feel. That being said, Parrying into the Flaming Charge is totally the best way to beat bosses. Love that tool and more games need it.

Maybe I just blocked it out of my brain...

I never played it :(

OP is on point. Star Successor is not only Treasure's best game, it's one of the best action games ever made.
