Video game memes that are based on inaccuracies or misconceptions

My submission to this will be the owl from Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Supposedly, you have to listen to his ramblings over and over again if you don't carefully select "no" when he asks if you want to hear his advice again.

In reality, though, you can just press B and skip the whole monologue. For some reason, few people seem to be aware of that.

post more.

Navi does not actually say "Hey! Listen!" sequentially. "Hey" happens when she prompts you, and "Listen" when you press Up C and acknowledge her.

Tidus's laugh is actually a deconstruction of capitalist commodification of irony by way of a recovery of sincere expression.

Pressing "B" to continue dialogue and simultaneously select negative options has been a staple in Nintendo games since before time itself.

How do people not know this?

When I discovered the pressing B thing for the first time for the owl, I laughed.

The first thing that came to mind for me is this:

I'm not defending Alien Colonial Marines, but the context of this gif and what it spawned is missed by most. The section features a blind and limpid xenomorph, the way it walks and doesn't see the player is intentional and not a glitch or silly ai mistake like many judged it as.

Intentional or not, it's pretty stupid.

That "too much water" was some random, completely stupid complaint that only IGN would make, rather than being a frequent complaint about Ruby and Sapphire for a decade.

Yeah I always thought that was weird. I've seen that complaint so many times about that game and yet people always poke fun at IGN for making that same complaint.

It is, but that's not what I'm arguing. The topic is about memes with inaccuracies or misconceptions, and that gif was used a lot especially in arguments about the bad AI in the game, but the basis was lost in translation for many, which is what the topic is about. Was just the first thing that came to mind.

shenmue is about sailors for like 2 minutes and thats it but it's the main thing about the game when brought up.
People also mistakenly call it a "good game" or "fun" when it's not either of those things.

I think it's more that the animation is goofy as hell is why it's picked on so much

The IGN water thing is just fanboys looking to validate their hype for whatever latest game IGN was critical of and attempting to 'discredit' it. At this point I'd say it has to be a willful thing.

Yeah, that quote really annoys me. We also get games that have poor launches but eventually turn out to be great, like Driveclub or Slain for example.

It was also a quote made before patches and expansions were really a big thing. For those games, what you shipped was what you got, and if it didn't work, customers didn't give you a second chance.

Only ones I'm thinking about are ones like Mortal Kombat fans coming up with wild, inaccurate theories about hidden characters like Ermac and Skarlet and eventually they just decided "sure, let's put 'em in the game".

Honestly like one of the things I hate most about the series is having to dedicate moves or Pokémon just to explore areas as well as seeing the same Pokémon over and over every 6 steps, having to surf everywhere is a combination of all these complaints.

Another Zelda example:

Error from Zelda 2 is often cited as an example of "lol look how dumb those game designers were with their glitches and shit!" I mean, they didn't even finish his dialogue!

Except they did; Error is his name, and another guy named Bagu (Bug) refers back to him and you have to return and get an item from him.

"You know, Ellie, we really are The Last of Us."

isn't an actual quote from the game.

Can't believe how much that has been used lol.

To me at least, it is a shitty complaint. The water, oceans, and diving of Hoenn are a big part of its identity, and I think it's weird to have a tick against the game for being faithful to its original.

If you wanna complain about HM's being shitty and having to lug around too many being lame, sure, but the water itself? Nah.

Not sure if this fully fits in the premise of this thread, but the infamous "cake is a lie" meme becoming an overused joke was always strange to me considering the in-game usage of it was more creepy than anything. Maybe that's just me though.

The amount of water is why Hoenn was widely regarded the worst region in the series by a large degree, and thus was a huge knock again those games. Being faithful doesn't suddenly change the fact that the design was considered by many to be bad. It's a valid summary of a complaint that's been levied at the original games since they were released.

I agree with you and it was one of the more interesting and tense parts of the game, but if the animation was better and it, say, prowled along the floor seeking its way by using its senses it would be a lot more intimidating - as opposed to looking like it's desperately holding in a titanic shit while it looks for a toilet.
