Video game memes that are based on inaccuracies or misconceptions

The Miyamoto quite. Tons of games get delayed over and over and still end up sucking.

You're not supposed to take it 100% literally in all instances. The quote is fine as it makes a perfectly valid point; it's better for a game to be delayed in order to give it extra polish than rush it out and it be forever bad (bear in mind that quote was made before patches were a thing).

Really? This explains why I always think of hyperbole when someone brings it up... I always thought it was real for other people, but then again, I feel the same with difficulty on water temple..

There are two parts of the game that are at odds with each other. OoT is open world, but it wants you to progress linearly... So if you take time to explore outside of the path the game wants, Navi becomes insufferable. If you were the type of person who always followed the "proper" way to play, you probably don't get bothered by her.

Re-read the quote:
"A delayed game is eventually good, a bad game is bad forever."

He isn't saying that a delayed will be good for sure, just that a delay might do the difference between a not so good game and a good game while if you stop earlier you just stuck to a bad game.

Yeah never understood the "X console has no games" thing. People conveniently forgetting that most people who own a specific console only play games on that console, and therefore play all the third party game there. Third party games making up the majority of any console's library.

Posted by people who have no idea how reviews or review sites work.

That people still bring this shit up annoys the hell out of me. It's even worse when they drag the Pokemon review into it, or use it to shit on Gone Home getting a good review.

How can people be so dense when it comes to how reviews work? Or how, like, time and people working at a company works, even?

EDIT: The Dishonored talk on the last page confuses me. Isn't 2 actually changing how much chaos you get for lesser enemies because 1 punished you too much?

I assumed the gif was partially about how one of the devs said something akin to "People want to be able to press a button and have something awesome happen"

True, and the gif may have made some sense if it was made before release, but its lived on and is still posted as if its reflective of the game.

Well, except consoles that get no third party games like the Wii U. But I agree with the sentiment.

The Final Fanfasy X laugh memes

People desperately try and act like there's something noteworthy about that scene but it's frankly an unremarkable "just force yourself to laugh without pause" thing. I don't believe anyone who says they know the scene was ironic but consider it poor on a technical level on a production side. Please. You saw the video and thought it was bad voice acting on a normal scene and can't backtrack well.
The intention of the scene is pretty clear, even in the videos that went viral. It's just that there is not a large enough difference between the game's baseline quality and this particular scene's quirkiness. If the acting and writing was better, I think the added contrast would have made the idea work better.

Some people claim that there were first person shooters before Halo, but this is false.

Halo invented the FPS.
This is true. Robert P. Halo was a visionary.

...

Good call, Corpekata.

I don't know why laughing scene defenders assume the mockery originated from a misunderstanding. It's a simple scene, after all. People mock it because it is bad and features a memorable line reading, not because they misunderstand it.
No, I think a lot of people do misunderstand it. A lot of people saw it in a youtube video featuring just the laugh taken out of context and not from playing through the game so people laugh at it as if it's completely abysmal voice acting.

The US Saturn launch gets referenced in a lot of new hardware talk like current NX threads.

A bunch of people seem to think it was announced and launched on the same day, when in fact it had already been on sale in Japan for 6 months at the time.
All that happened was the already publicised September release date got surprisingly moved forward to the E3 date with the collaboration of a few retailers, with mixed results.

That "too much water" was some random, completely stupid complaint that only IGN would make, rather than being a frequent complaint about Ruby and Sapphire for a decade.

Uh, no, it was indeed a frequent complaint about Ruby and Sapphire for a decade. Whether or not you agree with it is irrelevant. Plenty of people complained about that.

^^ Woosh this guy too.

That's the definition of "sequentially". You know, "one after the other"? Also making the quote accurate.

You're missing the point.

The meme is that Navi bombards you with "Hey Listen!" When the latter is actually optional and only happens if the player acknowledges Navi.

You're criticizing his semantic use of the word "sequentially."

I never got why that became a meme at all. People have taken the piss out of Hoenn for its water, trumpets and overabundance of Tentacools for years. But suddenly when IGN says it, it's the dumbest thing ever.

Plus 7.8 ain't even a bad score for ORAS

A recent one: "It's better than nothing" is not actually a thing that Keiji Inafune said.

I came here to post this. It exasperates me because not only was it not something that Inafune said, it was being said in response to someone asking if there would be any expansion content for Mighty No. 9 or if we'd just have to hope for a sequel. It wasn't some statement about the perceived quality of the game.

Totally misunderstands the Catalyst discussion at the end of ME3, which is too bad because there are plenty of actual logic issues to criticize.

I agree. It was slightly annoying to see this "issue" being a large focus of complaints out of so many legitimate ones.

OP, that doesn't make that meme inaccurate. I knew that, but the game doesn't explain this at all. So if you do actually press A at that moment, it restarts his rambling.

As a kid who could care less for stories, I remember running into this and being annoyed by ol' Hooter Hoot myself.

"MGSV doesn't have an ending"

ffs it has 5 endings, all with full credit scrolls:

GZ ending
Skull Face ending
Truth ending
Quiet Exit ending
FOB/Nuclear Disarmament ending

I like the fact you bolded decade. Thats exactly why the IGN remark is considered stupid. Hoenn's main feature that differentiates it from the other regions is the WATER. you'd think theyd pick up on that the first time around and realize "Hey! Wer're going back to Hoenn, I should expect water here!" But then you have said goofy quote happening. Its like saying there's too much caves and mountains in Sinnoh for crying out loud.
No one was surprised, obviously the design would carry over from the first game. As it turns out though, being a remake doesn't suddenly negate long standing issues with the region's design, issues that caused to widely be considered the worst region in the series by most fans.

A popular misconception is that the Tidus laugh being made fun of is, in itself, a misconception of the scene. Everyone knows it's supposed to be a forced laugh, smarty pants, that doesn't make it not funny.

The "What do you do in No Man´s Sky" questions were ridiculed to oblivion and became some kind of meme, but ultimately they were legitimate worries. The game´s launch absolved them.

Your right. What happens is you walk towards the platform you want to jump on, press the jump button and your mech don't jump and instead fall to the ground because jumping is disabled while the game is loading the battle screen. Much better, right?

Right.

"Join the Army, they said", didn't really originate in Company of Heroes, but it's actually an Astérix running gag, dating all the way back to the 1960s.

this is kind of hilarious

you had all these people saying "What do you do? huh huh huh"

then the game comes out and suddenly people are fully informed experts on every single thing that could have possibly gone into the game typed up in painstakingly researched lists

Chocobo being renamed "horse bird" in Final Fantasy XIV 1.0

The devs just wanted to make a kanji for "chocobo".
They chose 馬鳥, which is literally 馬horse + 鳥bird, but it's read the same as the usual チョコボ (Chocobo). The new kanji was used in some instances, and the usual katakana was used otherwise.

Since kanji are inspired by Chinese, some people fantasized and thought it meant the game was developed in China and it was supposed to explain the problems of the game.
The rumour derailed so much, I'm sure there are people who think we could actually read "horse bird" in the english version of the game.

Ooo yeah, good one.

I hope Andromeda has BioWare settling on an identity for the series going forward because the constant changes from 1 - 2 and 3 hurt the trilogy overall, even if I still love them. It could have been better if it was planned from day 1 because I understood the conversations and the "plan", but maybe its a case of being exposed to similar storylines in sci-fi.

Out of interest what other logic issues are you on about?

This ended up being referenced in game for the Heavensturn 2014 event, which was the year of the Horse. NPCs from the far east visited to convince us that their horses were superior mounts to our "horsebirds".

EDIT: The Dishonored talk on the last page confuses me. Isn't 2 actually changing how much chaos you get for lesser enemies because 1 punished you too much?
The bigger issue I had with Dishonored 1 is that the lethal abilities were a lot more fun to use, and while "punishment" might be a strong word, the game discourages their use. I wouldn't have had nearly as much of a problem with the chaos system if the non-lethal route was as satisfying from a gameplay standpoint.

It's a mostly well-designed game, but I found that one aspect of it to be misguided.

Long story short, you'll get different effects of chaos depending on the NPC's moral standing (If sympathetic, you'll get more chaos. If guilty or murderous, you'll get less chaos).

While its true that non-lethal playstyle were limited compared to lethal playstyle in the first game, both playstyles will be given equal treatment in the sequel.

The whole discussion is about whether Dishonored truly punishes you for playing lethally when the whole truth is just giving you a darker ending (I wouldn't call a darker ending a bad ending).

This one works for two Nintendo franchises with similar names, Pikmin and Pokemon. You always read about how Captain Olimar and the Pokemon trainers turns their creatures in to slaves to do what you demand from them when in reality that's completely untrue for both of them.

In Pokemon's case all of them want to be trained and tested to their limits, that's a part of their natural instincts and having a trainer to help them accomplish that is the best they can dream of. The anime constantly reference this, and in later generations so has the games, yet this comment gets spewed out regardless.

As for Captain Olimar turning the Pikmins in to slaves, they are very fragile creatures, if you look up some backstory of them, you would know they were close to facing extinction because of all the stronger predator animals on the planet eating them up like the Bulborbs. The only way they could survive was through the help of a smarter man organizing them properly, which is why all of them immediately flock to him as soon as they're grabbed up.

So many people say they hate Xenogears' Tower of Bable section because "I'll try to make this really hard jump, but then I get into a random battle WHILE I'M IN MID AIR IN THE MIDDLE OF THE JUMP and then after the battle I fall straight down."

That is something that literally never happens in Xenogears. Never ever.

Boom. Mic drop.

The specifics of the Xenogears complaint are wrong, but the core of it isn't. In Xenogears, whenever the game starts to prep a random battle, for some reason you lose the ability to jump. In the Tower of Babel, this lead to you getting ready to hit the jump, and then you not jumping at all for no reason, and entering into a random battle afterwards. On the disc versions of the game you can hear the disc spin up and you can avoid the jump, but on the PS3 digital version or an emulated one, you have to prep jumps by forcing a random battle beforehand. It's a legitimate complaint and makes some tricky jumps way harder than they have a right to be.
