You can do a lot of things to a lot of people in games and it doesn't mean your a real life deviant or killer.
I don't think Joe is a sexist by any means, it was at worst a poor one off joke from half a decade ago. He's called out women objectification in games plenty of times.
Just to be clear, i'm not saying years make you any less guilty for behavior you may or may not have done.
I'm saying i feel Joe never had any real malicious intentions towards anyone to begin with and was simply at a time period when we were much less sensitive about offending others with tastless and lowbrow humor. I can't remember how many times James said retarded in his older videos, and he did threaten to kill and murder virtual women in his earlier videos too. It was lower brow humor that just is far more easily picked up in today's climate. It should not be tolerated today by any means, but i think castigating people over their past comments from many years prior is stretching things when they have disproved certain assumptions to be made in the interim.

Well that's just the limitation of video games. Ultimately, show me any game that doesn't glorify violence when it has the opportunity to condemn it. Obviously war atrocities are a terrible thing, but outside of one or two instances find me a game that deals with those issues.
There are games that deal with violence, and they are a precious few at the moment... But as tastes change and gamers mature we should hopefully see better writing and a more receptive audience.
As it stands, we are still talking about a video from 2011. A world that didn;t have Gone Home, The Last of Us and any number of games that have driven the industry forward in that regard.
we can do some bizarre typing laughter here. but yeah, it wasnt the case here, but it most of the time, when not used by brazilians, can carry a racist undertone that isnt welcome. but it seems that wasnt the case here, gladly.

Someone in this thread made a good point though: What if he made a cheap, easy joke about a certain race instead of a certain group women? What if he joked about black people and then proceeded to knock out exclusively black people to "Smack My Bitch Up" instead of a certain group of women? There'd even be a perfect source for that in this incredibly racist character. The reaction would probably be different - even though it's still "just a joke" and "just a game".
So, yeah, I think it's a bad fucking joke and he should feel bad for actually spending more than 2 minutes working on it without realizing that...but, again, it's a 5 year old video.

Would it matter to you if the prostitutes chose the lifestyle in the game more or less than if they were thrust into it by force?
Would it matter more if he killed them in the game instead of incapacitated them?
Where do your lines get drawn in video games? Do you always choose the pacifist method to all fights? Do you ever dislike any group in any game or are you completely disassociated when you play?
These aren't trap questions but serious questions to consider.
I find the above content tasteless myself but I also don't necessarily hold every human being on the planet in the same regard. Choices I agree or disagree with alter that scale a little bit if I'm being honest. What someone is by choice has relevance, what someone is by circumstance much less so, though choice comes in many hidden factors. So, ask yourself where you draw your own lines because I'm pretty sure everyone else draws them differently.
I mean in GTA you kill prostitutes, but you also destroy cops like they're going out of style.... who only show up because you are accosting a city. Does anyone play GTA and just abide by the rules of the road? Maybe, but I'm pretty sure that is below a percent. Just a game. I've done far worse to characters in games for years. I figured out how many times you could shoot the scientists in Golden Eye before they die and made a habit of shooting every one of them in the crotch and feet, stopping right before the killing shot.

Luckily for us all those were (shocker!) not women. They were 1s and 0s on a computer designed to vaguely approximate the look and sound of a woman. Burning an effigy doesn't make someone a murderer (or express a predilection for murder at that).
I feel like soon we're going to need a card at the end of games a la the Hollywood "no real animals were harmed in the making of this film".

I don't think it generally reflects much on him so much as the time period when jokes like that were less offensive to hear. The absurdity of bringing up that kind of old footage from so ago to claim someone is a raging sexist, when he obviously has disproved that time and again even though he was never called out for being a sexist in the first place essentially proves the point.

Video Games are supposed to be all about fun, I personally don't see a problem with this review. The prostitutes are not real, nothing in the game is real, they're all fictitious. If anything, I didn't know Deus Ex could be played like Grand Theft Auto, Thx Joe!

The point i'm making is not about violence in video games, its about the assumption that because he committed violence against prostitutes in the game as a low brow joke and then made some commentary about it, it means he's a sexist who's against women because he made a low brow joke about prostitutes for a review, when he's disproved that in the years since with no provocation.
I think its a bad case of stretching an argument is all.

One you choose to become (or are forced to, but that's a different issue entirely) and the other you can't choose. To persecute a race is the same as persecuting someone for existing. To exist should never, ever be a crime.
To beat up prostitutes in real life is violence, assault and battery, but it's not nearly the same thing as racism or sexism. Oh, and prostitutes can be male, so it's not even sexism.
