Final Fantasy XV Death Spell gameplay trailer

My guess is people aren't complaining about it because most people seem to think it looks cool.

If it wasn't for the effect, I wouldn't use the spell. It would be more fun for me just to kill conventionally with attacks and warps. But I'll definitely want to use it and have partially "decayed" mobs running around . Don't really care that it doesn't look like real decay, or if it's weird on mechanical enemies or anything like that. It would be cool if more realistic, but I guess I'm not that picky.

I figure it's like that for technical reasons more than anything else. If it, like stripped away layer by layer or something to that effect, it'd require the creation and loading of new textures which there really isn't room to do. Personally, I think the effect looks pretty cool/creepy. Sometimes, you get some weird artifacts (like on mechanical stuff) but, whatever. Don't know that the enemy doesn't re-inflate if you leave it alone for a few seconds, either.

But, anyway, as for use, I think it'd going to end up being an end-game only trash clearer for the most part. Everything in that video is significantly lower level than Noctis. I could totally see using it as I'm just trying to get through some trivial content or for farming and whatnot.

Yeah, it's goofy on mechanical enemies.

The larger magitek armor and the soldiers were definitely really good examples of what I'm talking about (though the proportions of the soldiers lead me to believe that any sufficiently humanoid enemy would look similarly silly), but there's also stuff like the crocodiles whose jaws shoot off in two different directions. All in all it seems like about half or more of the shown enemies look totally ludicrous with this sort of distortion.

The mechanics of the spell are nice, though. We needed a fully targeted spell, and the potential to not just clear weak or nimble enemies but weaken large bosses (death seems to apply a debuff if it does not complete) makes for a variety of good uses.

So just to be clear:

Even though I read that the content is now locked and they're not touching it unless needed to, are they still optimizing performance?

Looks great btw. I do hope they continue to improve on it as it's still 2 months before release date.

Yes, they can because they will probably release a day one patch.

There was also a formation in Episode Duscae people called Pride Rock w.r.t. getting one of the Armiger weapons.

Not for the final game that will be on the disk. Chances there will be a day 1 patch still

The Twtichcon presentation showed the Bandersnatch, as well as
Soldier Wasps(giant killer wasps that can swoop down and carry you away) and Mandrakes(plant-like creatures that have root-like bodies, giant flowers on their heads and move around like apes). Both, to my knowledge, are also new. There are also another type of crab enemy, but it seems to be a palette swap of the ones near Galdin Quay.

I think I saw the Wasps in Kingsglaive, right ? they were looking a lot like those in the movie...

I totally agree. I feel the effect looks really cheap, especially how the target can continue its actions after being slimmed down, and how it works on the magitek enemies. The effect reminds me also of when cg models glitch out by accident.

That said, the actual purple magical effects look cool in addition to Noctis' animation, just not feelin the shrinking aspect.

Agreed, I think the effect should not continue after enemies are slimmed down,
the aesthetics after a few sec of death spell look like a complete glitch.
Not to mention the collisions are going to be off.

The way it needs to work is that the death spell should slim down the enemies but if you get hit or your mp runs out, enemies should wobble and reconstruct themselves back to normal.

I dunno, I guess people will enjoy leaving some poor anorexic garula running around ^-__-^

Isn't this the pc version based on the prompts? Seriously odd that they're still showing that this late into development.

Also story spoiler:

Probably just easier to capture the footage on PC and then edit. They showed the Xbox live gameplay in most of these areas yesterday.

If they would have told me the xbox one was the pro version I would have believed it :)
That being said , now I don't even know what will the pro actually bring to the table.

The implication considering we now know that the ring is given strictly near the end game. Yes i'm aware we've known he'd get it for awhile.

We know the death spell is something we get at the very end of the game, but I don't think anyone said anything about the ring being necessarily end-game.

The PC version continues to look a lot more stellar though.

They said it during the stream yesterday.

It doesn't strictly imply that the ring is only in your possession late game. It's possible that it's just a non usable key item when you first obtain it and that you unlock its abilities later on.

There's already a big difference looking at this video and yesterday's stream footage.

I'm really not seeing that anymore. They've brought the console and PC versions closer and closer as they've targeted console specs over the past two years. There isn't really a big difference anymore.

Plot twist: yesterday's stream was on a PC dev kit.

What big difference? The only real visual differences is the death spell causing the gloomy lighting and weather to change like the Ramuh summon in Duscae, but the consoles will have that too. Xbox version from yesterday saw a massive improvement from the master build a month ago.

they said "the spell" was late game. we've seen a cinematic of noct putting on the ring, and we know Luna has the ring, and we know noct gets it. Whatever you gain from that isn't a spoiler.

If you want more cadence to your point, look at the esrb blerb about the game. lots of implications there.

It really doesn't. I'm not seeing a difference outside of time of day changes.

Other than slight lighting improvements, higher resolution, and ever so slight better draw distance you're right :)

I pretty much expect that pc build to be what we get for ps4pro users

The Nazgul whispers are what really make it.

I'm excited to see how good this game will look by November. They seem to be making some serious strides in the final stretch.

Increased LOD, better AA, texture filtering, and shadows. Besides the obvious better IQ and more stable frame-rate. But this is just the PC dev build a more cleaner and more stable version of the PS4 build they worked on. I wouldn't call it a big difference because it is not ,but it is definitely noticeable (even if the difference is minute). I think the version we are getting for PS4 and Xbox One is nice.

Also didn't Tabata say that if they do a PC version after the game comes out he wanted to build it from the ground up for PC? That will be nice to see what that turns into.

I am sure DF will have a big breakdown the differences between the Pro, Standard PS4, and Xbox One at launch. We will see how it all turns out

Anyone else think that this trailer was too violent?

I mean, making something explode from the inside out in a final fantasy game seems... iunno.. a bit much. This isnt Mortal Kombat. So why have that spell?

It's not like they are exploding in some blood splatter.

Not really. It's grim, sure, but lots of FFs have had a death spell. It really isn't graphic at all a la MK, but it IS extra creepy, that's for sure.

I'm curious about any lore associated with the spell. It looks less like a traditional FF death spell, and more like some kind of gravity attack, as if the enemy is collapsing in on itself.
