2016 has been an absurdly fantastic year in gaming

I could fill out a Top 10 list out of releases from before August alone. Probably the best year since 2011.

We've been set for a while due to all the delays.

2014 was a pretty bad year because of delays, but the delays caused 2015 to be good, and delays from 2015 caused 2016 to be good, and 2016 delays are causing Q1 of 2017 to be insanely good.

Many key games are still to be launched, for me it will be fantastic if Dishonored 2, Final Fantasy XV and The Last Guardian all deliver.
So far I've really liked Uncharted 4, Dark Souls 3, Ratchet&Clank, Street Fighter V and Deus Ex Mankind Divided.
Mafia 3 was a total letdown recently though.

It's been "good", but fantastic sounds like an exaggeration.

Yeah, I'd agree with this. Still haven't played Deus Ex though.

The only thing that's really wowed me was Uncharted 4, but that was mainly for the narrative, and for how well it nailed the ending. The gameplay was fine, but nothing impressive.

Even with Doom, I have trouble seeing where all the love is coming from. It was a fun romp, but that's about it. I thought The New Order had so much more to it.

I only own a ps4 and a modest gaming PC and here's what I think

2015 had two all time greats for me with Bloodborne and Witcher 3. Nothing from 2016 comes close to those. In fact it's telling the best 2 things I've played this year, being Dark Souls 3 and Blood and Wine, are both related to those two games. Grim Dawn as well if that counts, but its been around for a while

I liked, but didn't love UC4 and still yet to play Doom which is very much on the list of things to do. As for coming up, FFXV could be pretty great, and TLG looks interesting as well, but to eclipse last year they would need to be pretty special.

I think it was 2011 that was one of the more crazy in recent years. Dark Souls, Arkham City and Skyrim all released close to one another and all demanded plenty of my time. There was other good stuff that year as well that I can't think of right now

No love for Mafia?

Its not a very good game. First six hours, great. Everything after that, the worst Ubi-style grind game ever.

Wouldn't have Mirror's Edge Catalyst on any great list either, but at least its joining EA Access later this year.

and yeah, Hitman definitely belongs on any list, its one of my top 3 GOTYs. Final Fantasy XV is also coming Nov 30th.

Ask me about the moon landing or the temperature at which jet fuel burns. You may be surprised at what you learn.

Have you played Overwatch or Dark Souls 3?

Forza Horizon 3 is quickly becoming my favorite racing game ever. It's that good. I still haven't played DOOM but I love everything I heard about it, so yeah you'd have a point OP if 2015 hadn't been even better. Bloodborne, The Witcher 3, Super Mario Maker, Fallout 4, Splatoon and Metal Gear Solid V? That's just insane even if you don't like all these games.

One of the best year ever, really. Beside AAA line up, we also got some amazing small games like Stardew Valley, Devil Daggers, ABZU, I Am Setsuna etc.

Also VR.

What a year.

Ratchet and Clank? Gears of War? Mirror's Edge? Weird list OP.

I've only played two of those games. 2016 has been amazing for me because I'm catching up on all the Virtual Novels I missed in the past 5 years.
Not sure why you're questioning R&C, it's an absolutely fantastic game.

2014 got sort of underrated and I think that's partly because DA:I won so many accolades and that game is very unremarkable IMO. 2014 had Bayonetta 2, Sunset Overdrive, Wolfenstein TNO, A Link Between Worlds, Mario Kart 8, Tropical Freeze, Child of Light and Alien Isolation. That's pretty good for a down year.

Surface of Me

I'm not an NPC. And neither are we.
Both Indies and AAA releases have been great for me this year. And there are still more to come!

Not only that, but 2016 was also a great year for post DLC support for games of yesteryear. Halo 5, Rocket League, and Rainbow Six Siege all had frequent and killer DLC updates this year. Halo 5 is still probably my most played game of 2016, with Overwatch a likely close second.

I've spent more time with Dragon Quest Builders than I care to admit. But let's look at all the games I've enjoyed this year so far.

Exist Archive (currently playing through it right now, but it's pretty fun!)
SFV (barring the bad launch, still a great fighter, if not my favorite)
Overwatch
DOOM (and I don't even like FPS games for the most part)
UC4
Assault Suit Leynos
Grand Kingdom
Odin Sphere Leifthrasir
Atelier Sophie: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Book
One Piece: Burning Blood
OmniBus
Shadow of the Beast
Bravely Second: End Layer
Ratchet & Clank
Dark Souls 3
Nights of Azure
Resident Evil Zero HD Remaster
Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth
I Am Setsuna
Hitman (once the fucking server issues got fixed and I got the PC version, things went a lot better)
Pokkén Tournament
Attack on Titan

That's like just half of it to be honest. And then I have fucking World of FF, FFXV, The Last Guardian, Dragon Ball Fusions, and some imports like Yakuza 6 to play? Fucking painful just looking at those games. Most of them I finished, but there are a bunch on that list I'm still working on. And I still need to buy like ten more games.

Jesus 2016 has been good to me. Personally, at least.

Overwatch is solid, but as someone who needs a carrot to chase, I find it difficult to stick with. They need to be faster with maps.

Dark Souls 3 is very well made, but after getting through the Dancer, I just feel burnt out. It doesn't help that I marathoned through DS2 and Bloodborne right before DS3's launch, but it kinda feels like just another one of those.

Nearly all my must haves have been either delayed (Gravity Rush2, Horizon, Persona 5, Nioh, Mass Effect Andromeda...), ended up nowhere near the level I was hoping they would be (Uncharted4 but particularly No Man's Sky) or as F2P grind (The Tomorrow Children)...

At least there was Deus Ex MD, Gravity Rush R, Dragon Quest Builders and Ratchet and Clank... And there is still hope that TLG will be something special. Still on the fence for FFXV, whether I'll buy or not.

Oh, I do have to try Doom sometime.

I don't like overly violent/gory games, so quite a few in the OP are out for me. But we did get DQ VII, so I guess it's been a good year after all!

Even though I didn't play much this year it definitely was a good year.

It was also the year I got back into visual novels.

Actually just took a break from Civ VI to try Doom's arcade mode and was thinking how wild it is that Firaxis and id released three of their best games this year, including XCOM 2. Felt nostalgic in the best way.

Between those, Dark Souls III and a few indie classics in Inside, Hyper Light Drifter, Stephen's Sausage Roll and The Witness, I think it's been one of the best years in recent memory. Not much for me from here on out, but it's not as if I need anything else to consume my life.

It's been a great year for me. Top five so far would probably be Street Fighter V, Raiden V, Caladrius Blaze, Dark Souls III, and Tokyo Mirage Sessions. All awesome games.

Uncharted 4 -> Doom -> Overwatch

May was something else, man. I haven't had so much joy playing games in years.

Eh. I only care for Overwatch and Dark Souls 3. Everything else this year was pretty boring. Looking forward to the Last Guardian though.

I haven't played 90% of these games.

Too much free time spent playing Mobas.

Without even realizing it until right now I am already back in...

Damn you.

:edit:

2015 is the best year for gaming though.

It has been good. Only 3 games stand out for me though, u4, hitman and blood and wine. Im sure dishonored 2 will be great.

I completely understand where people are coming from but this really hasn't been a great year for me. Ratchet and Clank, Uncharted 4, Forza Horizon 3, Hyper Light Drifter, and Doom are all I really cared about. I played the least amount of games in about 5 years this year.

Even though I didn't play much this year it definitely was a good year.

It was also the year I got back into visual novels.

Speaking of which, my 2016 game of the year, The House in Fata Morgana apparently didn't make the list. Guess that's not too surprising since hardly anyone has played it.

I guess Uncharted 4 and Odin Sphere:Leifthrasir would round out my top 3.

I didn't realise what a good year it had been for gaming till reading this thread. My mind has been elsewhere for most of the year so struggled to get into the few games I bothered to check out.

Other than Inside, Dark Souls 3, SFV and UC4 (which I loved initially but gave up on halfway through and need to revisit sometime) I've played/enjoyed barely anything new this year and games that would normally be on my radar haven't been.

Still yet to play Hitman, Deus Ex, DOOM - all games I would normally be extremely interested in.

Fiending for Dishonored 2 though. And South Park next year...

Final Fantasy XV should definitely be on the list in the OP. If this is the year that FFXV and The Last Guardian come out and don't suck (after 10 years each) that would be legendary!! Also, the launch of all the major VR players with a great PSVR launch lineup (with Robinson and Star Wars still to come :)).

I completely agree OP, and my top 3 for the year are on your list.

I haven't read this whole thread, but you missed Pokemon and Dead Rising 4 on your still to come list though.

not to me :/

my most anticipated games in the first half didn't live up to expectations(for me) like Uncharted 4 and Dark souls 3 and over all nothing comes close to stuff like Witcher 3 and Bloodborne last year or like Bayonetta 3 in 2014

After Uncharted 4 I bought nothing, but 2 small 3 hours indie games and I forced my self to buy TMS, because there was nothing else I was interested in.

The Last Guardian and FF15 better deliver.

Dragon's Dogma, The Silver Case remaster and Danganronpa on Steam
Granblue Fantasy English patch
Stardew Valley
KOFXIV
Rez Infinite
Thumper
PSVR
Yakuza 6, TLG, Berserk Musou, SW Sanadamaru SG Gundam coming end of year

As a Japanese/rhythm/indie games lover and console VR early adopter I can't recall the last time I had an equally great gaming year

As much as I love Overwatch, Doom, DaS3, and Deus Ex, last year was much better IMO.

I mean, Bloodborne for a start...

It's always like this but yeah, a year with the definite version of Rez as well as FFXV/The Last Guardian releasing within a few weeks of each other is definitely one to remember.

Persona 5, FFXV, and The Last Guardian have the capability of launching this year into one of those legendary years.

No Quantum Break mentions? Damn, it was one of the more eventful AAA games this year for me. Combat was lots of fun.

It's a fantastic year for games and I still haven't the time to play the ones I know I'll love like Deus Ex, Dishonored 2 and Hitman.

On another note, Team Fortress 2, my go to multiplayer game, just had the absolute worst year of it's entire lifespan with terrible updates and general incompetence from Valve. So yeah... Heh. That happened.

I feel like I'm going to have an amazing Winter with gaming. I've work so much this year and I plan on taking things slow for once.

I have already played Uncharted 4, which was amazing. Ratchet and Clank was solid too, definitely a must play if you're new the series.

I have yet to play DOOM which I'll be for sure buying. I'm currently playing through GTA V, which I'm enjoying the story. I still have Bloodborne & Until in the wrapper, and plan on picking up Witcher 3 + DLC & Inside in a future sale (PC versions) as well as FFXV around launch (got a cheap preorder).

How much goodness am I in store for GAF?

I have too much on my play to even think about getting BF1 or Gears 4 (future purchases for sure).

EDIT: SHIT and Overwatch I still haven't got for PC. I'm so fucked..

The Witness
Overwatch
Uncharted 4
Rise of the Tomb Raider
Deus Ex Mankind Divided
Oxenfree
Inside
Ace Attorney 6
Va-11 Hall-A
Dragon Quest VII
SMTIV Apocalypse
Firewatch
Abzu

A pretty great year. I'd still put my GOTY last year (Life is Strange) above anything on this list but this year has already been far deeper than last year for me with Dishonored 2 and Pokemon still coming. 2017 looks even better because the top stuff from this year (Persona, Horizon, and Zelda) all got delayed and there's so much other stuff coming too.
