Battlefield 1 PC Performance Thread

I have a high end machine (GTX 1080), but I'm running this at 1440p ultra everything (no AA), 120% scaling, and -1.000 LOD bias (for some sharper textures) and the game usually sits between 90 - 120 fps. Insane.

Do wish DICE would provide some extra graphical wiggle room for people like me. The water shader is nice but super cheap and reacts very poorly to camera motion. Give the option to tighten that shit!

Mainly surprised at my framerates as Battlefront isn't near as well performing. Likely because it looks better. But still. The -1.000 almost always hits performance hard, and here I'm still soaring about 90fps most of the time.

How? Console command?

Nvidia Inspector. Using the Battlefield 1 profile (or any game for that matter), I set Transparency Supersampling to AA_MODE_REPLAY_MODE_ALL and that enables brute forced LOD bias to work.

Running i5 2500k@4.5ghz, 16gb ram, gtx1070.

Running High preset with 100% resolution scale at 1080p.

Game runs really bad. Beta ran much better. I only bought the game, because I was convinced from the beta that it would run fine. Otherwise I would have waited until I upgraded my CPU next year.

FPS dropping to 40 all the time during firefights, making the game stutter like hell.
DX12 seems to give a little boost, but not too much.

Anything I can do with the settings to shift some load from CPU to GPU somehow?

I got the same in an Operations match with an I5 4690k@3.9ghz, 16gb, and a GTX 1080.

I also found out that using a DS4Windows causes the same stuttery low fps performance. But thats not related to the Operations matches.

So its some kind of cpu usage problem?

Poor utilisation/scaling for me with 980 Ti's. Both GPU's utilisation jumps around from high 90's to 60's in terms of usage %. Then sometimes both cards are stuck at like ~75% as well.

I tried a few different settings in NV Inspector but no dice. The SLI profile is the same one as used by Battlefront and Battlefield 4 so I guess we have to wait for a patch/driver hotfix or something.

I'll test for negative scaling. Disappointing it isn't better. BF4 was a game that scaled great with SLI.

RX 470 nitro 8gb
DX12

90-100 fps on Ultra.

I get sudden dips bellow 60 fps sometimes though.

I did a test on a single map quickly but what I'm seeing with SLI on vs off is little to no scaling. SLI appears to have higher max framerates but also lower min framerates, the average is probably pretty much a wash. I think I'll just use a single 980ti for now. I'm not seeing a benefit for SLI at the moment, Definitely a disappointment. This is why I'm going to sell my 980tis and replace it with a single 1080ti when it's released.

What speed of main RAM?

Any tips for getting this to run better? Everything is medium, Geforce Experience optimized the game, but I get massive single digit FPS drops whenever anything starts happening.

I'm having great performance, using a 144hz 1080p monitor with:

gtx 970 SLI
i7 3820 @ 4.5ghz
16gb ddr3 @1800 mhz

Game is above 100fps 90% of the time, see drops between 75-100 sometimes though when playing Conquest. I'm loving it. Glad I didn't sell these two for a 1070 just to have a single card......waiting for next gen to upgrade.

To everybody having problems with more than capable machines: download CPU-Z and check the memory tab. See what it says for "channel". If you have multiple sticks of RAM and it says "single", turn off your computer and install them as dual channel.

I did that (I know better! Been building PCS for over 10 years) and now it's locked at 60FPS.

Or quad channel if your platform supports it.

Just realized this game has dolby atmos, my goodness even without overhead speakers it sounds amazing.

Why is this option greyed out for me? I can't enable it. I've tried changing the output confirgurations, etc. Nothing works. I'm using stereo headphones.

Running at 1440p on a gysync 144hz monitor. Been playing on ultra and framerate seems to be mostly in the 90s with drops as low as high 50s (seldom). It seems to run at high FPS but there is something off about it. i feel for as high as the framerate is it feels kind of stuttery. Anyone else seeing the same behavior? any way to fix it?

This game is running real smooth for me. I'm getting locked 60 at 4K with everything maxed except for lighting (high). Using latest Nvidia drivers and DX12.

i7 6700k @ 4ghz
Titan X Pascal OC'd by ~10%
24GB RAM

Why use DX12 with that rig? Pretty sure DX11 runs better.

Oh ok simple really then. I can assume it is not affecting anything as the game feels smooth as butter to play.

Fast Sync is simply triple buffering for Direct X. It's meant to get you the best control response by letting the game engine run as fast as possible, regardless of your monitor refresh rate. It then discards selected frames to deliver one every 16 ms to your display so it stays in sync.
You don't see the extra frames, but the game is processing more of your control inputs than it would if you didn't use fast sync. It's a bit like the responsiveness of playing with Vsync off but without the screen tearing.

HWmonitor showed the temp at about 43c. Most times I checked it it was reading about 50% cpu useage as well.

I monitored my GPU and kept the log. You can literally see where it locks up.

GPU Core Clock [MHz] , GPU Memory Clock [MHz] , GPU Temperature [°C] , Fan Speed (%) [%] , Fan Speed (RPM) [RPM] , Memory Used [MB] , GPU Load [%] , Memory Controller Load [%]

I've never had hard freezes like this in other games and I just finished The Witcher 3's expansions on ultra/high.

Look at that log. Your clock is dropping very low and load% is dropping to 0. Your fan is also shutting off at what looks like random times.

Do you have any GPU programs running like MSI Afterburner or anything from the manufacturer?

Yeah this is what is happening. Newest drivers didn't fix it. I have no idea what to do. I even reformatted and upgraded to Windows 10, that didn't help either. I didn't have this with the beta nor did it occur during my 10 hour trial of the game the week before the game came out. Game runs flawlessly otherwise.

4790k @ 4.8
16GB ram
GTX 980FTW
Windows 10

Temps don't go above 80.

Is your 980 overclocked? I had a problem where my display driver would crash in rise of the tomb raider on a 970. Wouldn't do it on any other game at the overclock I had but would do it on tomb raider. Turned it down a tad and it stopped happening.

I was reading that the DX12 version with new Nvidia drivers actually has better performance than the DX11 version. Have you seen comparisons showing something different with the latest drivers?

The DX12 renderer has some pretty bad frame time spikes, use DX11 is actually smoother.

Thanks dudes, will switch DX11. WTF is going with DX12? I can't name one game that has show significant benefits with it over DX11.

Run Display Driver Uninstaller and reinstall driver. If that doesn't work, try downclocking your GPU by -200 both memory and core using MSI Afterburner. If the problem is easy to reproduce, it should tell you pretty quickly if it's your hardware or not.

Ok I will try this.

I noticed I had the GPU Memory restriction setting to on, and VRAM was hoving around 3.5GB. I turned it off since I have a 4GB card, hopefully that will help.

The problem is that the crash doesn't happen until after about an hour or so of game play. So the only way I can know if it's working is if I am able to play for longer than an hour without a crash.

Yeah, it is, it's the FTW edition.

Using MSI Afterburner I noticed the temp limit was set to 80C. There were times that it would hit 79-80C, does that mean the GPU was shutting itself off? I set it to 85. I'll try this and scaling back the clock speeds too. Will do more testing tonight when I get off work.

Good performance on my end:

e5-1650 v2
8g DDR3 1666 mhz EEC RAM
GTX 1060
Samsung 850 SSD

Just slapped it up to High and get between 110 and 120 fps. I imagine I can probably tweak the settings more carefully later to try and get some stuff higher without compromising FPS.

Also, need to mess with my 1060 overclock as well, might be able to squeeze a few more FPS out of it that way.

I believe any game made before 1997 is "essentially cave man art."
3770k @ 4.2ghz
1070 g1 in oc mode
16gb ram
installed on sshd

3840 x 2160 100% resolution
All settings set to ultra
AA turned off

Games running fantastic in single player mode, regularly hitting 60fps

I run everything maxed out and get between 70-90fps according to rtss...

GTX 1080
i7 5820k @ 4.4ghz
16gb DDR4 @ 3000MHz
1440p @ 60hz

Why does rtss display the game running higher than my monitor can display? I am using fast sync in the Nvidia control panel.

Don't think it's a good idea for Fast Sync in this game, you need to be getting around 180FPS for that to not cause issues with a 60hz screen.

Struggling to get 60fps with everything on LOW on my brother's PC.

1920x1080
i5 4670@3,4Ghz
GTX 970
16GB
Game is installed on a standard hard drive

With the optimal GeForce Experience or the "Auto" in the game's options (mix of ultra and high) I get around 35fps. V-sync is on, FOV on max.

Is this normal ? (His PC might a mess)

A quick update on my original post regarding high CPU usage here:
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=220438557&postcount=330

I'm running the latest BF1 driver, but with identical settings. For whatever reason, I'm getting 60-70% (total) CPU usage on the same maps I was getting 95-100% on.

Again, might have been server side, may still occur on certain setups. The new Nvidia driver didn't noticeably increase performance, but then I was getting great performance before it.

I get pretty high temperatures as well, around 76c on a 6700k @ 4.5ghz. That';s with an HI100 v2 cooling it too.

Curious, should I be using DX11 or DX12 with an i7-3770? It's getting a bit long in the tooth I think, got it at the very beginning of 2013.

Tried both, using the eye test I'd say dx11 if paired with Nvidia.

Getting around 50-60 fps. Sometimes it's 45 sometimes it's 65.
But i have to say this. This game is looking gorgeous.

Maybe try turning the overclock down slightly or turn up the fan profile and make sure its set to use custom fan profile.

So for some reason the game doesn't utilize full core clock speeds unless it's stressing the system. When I play at 1080p, my core clock speed sits at around 1000 Mhz. When I turn resolution scaling up to 115%, it goes to 1300, and at 125% it goes to my OC speed of 1490 Mhz.

Even then, the speed fluctuates depending on where I stand and look.

970 btw

Is the server browser running kind of slow for you guys?

edit: Also any settings that are killer? Been having a 60fps experience with a 970 with everything on high but just encountered some desert map with a lot of fog that tanked my framerate.

Origin resources usage
  • QtWebEngineProcess.exe x3 => ~ 6 to 12% CPU, 124MB RAM
  • Origin.exe => ~ 7 to 10% CPU, 54MB RAM
Steam resource usage in comparison
  • Steam Client Bootstrapper aka Steam.exe => ~ 0 to 0.5% CPU, 22MB RAM
  • Steam Service and Helper processes => ~ 0% CPU, ~ 3MB RAM
Origin didn't use resources like that before it got that huge overhaul patch. Reason for sudden ~20% CPU usage increase found?

I'm running a 970 overclocked slightly and I'm on a mix of Ultra/High - Resolution scale at 115% and I'm in the 80's most of the time on DX11.

Damn, my 970 is not overclocked but it seems like I have LOD issues where if I look over a vast area of land my FPS tanks
