The weird thing about potential external drive compatibility is that you wouldn't be able to do the whole "switch" thing.

I could see Nintendo only allowing SD cards as additional storage for that reason.

Yeah I was thinking this too. Only issue would be that SD cards are still relatively expensive when you get into the 128GB/256GB range. I wonder if they could do something like being able to have several different SD cards for different digital games/patches. Like you buy 1 64GB SD card and it has your digital version of game x, y, z, and you have another SD card that has games a, b, and c. And then you could just swap them out, with each card being tied to the console. Probably not though, curious how they'll handle storage.

Edit: For clarification, I'm not saying these are the carts Nintendo sells. It would basically be the same as people storing their games on external HDDs, just with SD cards.

Except there'd be no point to USB ports on the dock if it didn't allow external HDD. What else would it be used for? Transfering...stuff to your PC? In which case, why would there be multiple ports? I think it's very safe to say HDDs are supported

Does the fact that its using cartridges mean a small or (possibly) nonexistent installs? Is there a significant advantage to playing off of internal memory vs carts in terms of bandwidth speeds? Would be nice to save the HD space for digital games and not retail games that must be installed.

GameCube controller adapter!

That'd be implying that Nintendo isn't gonna make us fork over more dough for THIS:

Now that I've thought about it, Splatoon and Smash Bros are nice to have on the Switch (and I may end double dipping if I can find them for like 15€ or so), but there's definitely one Wii U game I'm willing to double dipping at full price if they remaster it : Pokkén Tournament.
I already have the game on Wii U and put a few dozen hours on it, but it really feels like there's so much potential on it. Visually the game could really use the additionnal power to be less blurry and with more details on the backgrouds.

And moreover, more characters would be awesome. Even with the upcoming DLC characters (Darkrai, Scizor, Empoleon) there's so many good candidates. Like, imagine if they put Greninja on it and that he could transform into fucking Ash-Greninja.

This is maybe the Wii U game that would benefit the most of a Switch port.

Which is super cool, the potential for more retro games using the joy con controllers would be neat.

I still am not a fan of the joycons, or rather using each side of them as their own controller. What was sacrificed by making that possible doesn't seem worth it to me when what you get is two really small controllers that have awkwardly placed buttons. My hope at this point is that they sell replacement sides with a solid D-pad and different stick positions. Know that is what the pro controller is for but I think the normal controller could have just been designed better from the start, and as I said, the sacrifice from making it so they can be used as two separate controllers just isn't worth it to me.

This is probably the only disappointment I have so far though and am really excited about the rest of the system. Well I guess I will also miss second screen for UI/map elements to keep the primary screen more clean, but will just have to accept that going forward.

My goodness, what...what is that?!

Hopes and dreams.
It may look awkward, but remember that any joycon sides can also connect to the smaller middle piece. That is also why people should be wary when designing their own since the middle piece has it's own handles/the new sides have to just slide into it.

That and local multiplayer would be a way smaller hassle to set up since each player has their own screen and console.

Hopes and dreams.

No, this is Hope and Dreams.

And this is a nice transition to introduce a topic that I had in mind for a long time : a few months ago, Toby Fox said on twitter that he was interested on a port of his game to Wii U, and even that he already talked to a Nintendo rep. The only problem was that Game Maker (the engine he used) wasn't compatible with the Wii U, and that he hadn't the time to reprogrammate everything himself.

It was in February 2016, since now some indies already have some devkits, maybe an Undertale port for Switch is on the works ?

Regarding backwards compatibility

NES: No issue
SNES: No issue
N64: No issue
GameCube: No issue - Joycons have analog triggers. Custom controllers. GCN adapter
Wii: Dock to have sensor bar support. Joycon behaves as wiimotes. Games requiring sensor bars only works when docked.
Wii U: Games can work on handheld mode with the touch screen if needed

GB: No issue
GBC: No issue
GBA: No issue
Nintendo DS: Side by side on handheld?
Nintendo 3DS: Side by side on handheld?

Was this discussed yet? A Twitch streamer was in the Switch trailer and talks about his experience.

https://www.twitch.tv/dickhiskhan/v/96441430

Over 200 people were cast for it. And it sounds like it was released very very quickly after it was done.

Posted for the third time now. Yes.

Joy Cons don't have IR sensors = can't work as Wiimotes.
Wii U games use two screens = can't work.

While that would work well for single-player, you can't really use that widespread for tournaments. The point of the GameCube Adapter is to allow up to 4 GameCube controllers at once (or 8 if you have 2 Adapters plugged in).

Yeah, if they design a middle that fits it would be perfect!!

The end game.

I certainly hope it is. I want Cube-cons in black please.

The future.

And what a future it is.

They will probably force each player to use their own screen in every game if posible.

Since the Switch succeeding Gamecube thread has closed, what is it about the Gamecube that people want in the Switch? Personally, I can't stand all the peripheral crap consoles have now. Xbone and PS4 feel very bloated by their features. Gamecube was elegant in its simplicity. Switch on, put disc in, play game. I'd like this to return for Switch. Make it start up quickly, have very basic media features and Miiverse. That's it.

I think another thing people want back from the GCN era is for Nintendo to stop using archaic technology in their consoles. Seems like their doing that with the Switch.

Something is bugging me about the controllers and possible bundles. If they don't bundle the grip with the console, what is the point of it when the Pro controller will be available?

One of the people in the Switch intro video did a Twitch stream telling about how they got a part in the video, the console, controller, etc...

https://www.twitch.tv/dickhiskhan/v/96441430

Hmm, he says the controllers are very comfortbale. And I'm assuming he doesn't have small hands, so that's great.

Are this many people really unaware of how TV/movies/commercials handle filming TVs? They're never actually filming anything. Take a camera and point it at a TV. It looks like shit. If it's a CRT it's gonna look like shit AND strobe. They always superimpose the stuff playing on a screen in post.

Usually they green-screen it though so things like that layering issue don't happen, but the rumors say the Mario bit was added last minute so I guess it's sort of understandable that they missed it in a rush.

How is the glow of the display added? Is it real or done in post?

Sorry if this has already been asked/answered but can the console be charged away from the dock with a USB phone charger or something proprietary like the 3DS charger?

That's my thought. And like I said in a previous reply, it's literally the first thing shown in the trailer. That has to be the standard couch pad

Yeah, if they design a middle that fits it would be perfect!!

My hope currently is springing eternal. Especially since the joycons as currently designed are my only big worry with the system so far. I mean there is a precedent of sorts with them bundling the last smash with a device that allows you a better controller option for the game but we will see.

I don't think they will release the base model without both Dock and Grip, considering how central they are for Nintendo Switch marketing. Maybe later down the road, when they will be in dire need of releasing the cheapest Switch possible.

Agreed with the first part. The "joycon" as a whole will be the standard controller bundled with the system and I don't even see a time when the full thing isn't included with the system unless they make a new version of it and that is included instead.

So much potential for customized joycons. Soooooooo much potential.

"Yo, I just got that new Captain Falcon Joy-Con!! It is the shit man!!"

"Yeah that's nice, for beginners. Donkey Kong Joy-Con. Get on my level!"

"Those are both nice, but not as fresh as my Splatoon Joy-Cons."

So much potential.

I've not purchased a handheld since PSP but fuck it, I'm getting this. It's nice having a thought that I could be playing games with high graphical fidelity without any touchscreen shit, but yeah I do hope the battery is half decent.

I find that most Nintendo games are shit so don't give a toss about them but Capcom finally using new Monster Hunter assets, after reusing PS2 ones for over a decade is exciting. And Dragon Quest on handheld of course will be very awesome. :)

Have there been any shots that give us a close look at the BOTTOM of the console? I really hope Nintendo isn't using some stupid proprietary power adapter again. Type C USB would be the best, but micro USB would suffice.

I don't know about that. With the whole family of devices comments from Iwata (granted he's gone and they could have changed directions from that as he also said no hybrid) I could see different skus down the line.

A cheaper portable only sku (especially for Japan) that's just the tablet, JoyCons and a charger cable.

A cheaper console only version (especially for NA) that's just a new, small console box packed with a ProController.

The current likely launch combo of tablet, dock, JoyCons and controller grip.

Something like that makes a lot of sense to me, just not the first year or so (other than maybe the portable only in Japan--I could even see that SKU at launch since the console market has shrunk so much over there) as they don't want brand confusion. But more options could generate some more purchases down the line to people not buying the base sku as they won't use one mode or the other.

Joy Cons don't have IR sensors = can't work as Wiimotes.
Wii U games use two screens = can't work.

DS games are playable with one screen, and advanced motion control can replicate IR. Maybe not 100% But close enough.

All games are doable with the joy cons. That's how good it is.

Forgive me since I haven't read all 159 pages and I'm sure someone mentioned this, but it's kind of weird that it looks like the Switch charges from the bottom. So if you use the kickstand you can't charge?

Not at all. DS games are playable one one screen because they're DS games. You can't squish Wii U games down to one screen, that's nuts. Especially since it would have to be the console screen for touch. The functionality is simply not there. It's not gonna work no matter how you slice it. The only way for Wii U functionality to work is a two-screen-mode.

Wii has a chance if they can pull off the workaround. Wii U is definitely out unless there is a two-screen mode.
