Media Create Sales: Week 41, 2016 (Oct 10 - Oct 16)

PSVR sold 52K units (PS Camera bundle 41K, stand-alone 11K). Sell-through is over 90% and supply was unable to meet demand. There are 2 PSVR exclusive titles released in retail [PlayStation VR Worlds and RIGS Machine Combat League]. Both have a high sell-through of 70~90%, but total copies sold was only 9,000. However, with over 20 titles including demos available [on PS Store] at launch, it is believed that early adopters mostly bought these digital titles instead.

Interesting. I wonder how long the interest can keep up. Honestly, I expected a really poor opening and a big drop into nothingness.

Everyone's favorite developer Level-5 has announced that Fantasy Life 2, the mobile sequel to the hit 3DS game which made everyone wonder how it was a sequel at all when it looks like a remake of the first game, will henceforth be retitled Fantasy Life Online, better reflecting the fact that it is not in fact a fucking sequel but a remake of the original game on an online platform. It is still slated to launch sometime this year.

Hmm that name seems a bit bland. Maybe they should add an adjective like Real or Legit....

not sure if serious
Of course not, just a little rib to all the other times people ask why Monolith Soft is not releasing Xenoblade and Xenoblade X on other consoles =P

I don't really think anyone can give an honest assessment of how well it could do in Japan right now. I mean, we can guess but it's kinda pointless. Markets don't automatically accept or reject products based on one or two factors. Some factors may be in favor, but in the end it comes down to what the overall platform has to offer and what the barrier of entry is. How much does it cost? What games are there? Are games being designed for it as a portable or as a console? What is the pricing on the games like? How well does it actually work as a portable in terms of practical use? All questions we have no answers to.

It's always going to be a combination of software and hardware. Would Game Boy software had done as well if it was on Lynx hardware, or would Lynx software done better if it was on Game Boy hardware? Personally, I think it was the combination of Game Boy software and Game Boy hardware that made the platform a success.

Looking at "Switch, I'm seeing Game Boy software on Lynx hardware. Of course, they're throwing their net wide, so maybe they can make a success of it by releasing "Game Boy" hardware later. Still, I think that it's possible to make a legitimate prediction of how Nintendo software will do on specific hardware. After all, the software is largely already known, it's the hardware that is new.

IMHO switch is appealing mostly to people who are already into Nintendo or handheld gaming and will struggle to introduce new people into console gaming.

So the upper ceiling I could see is 3DS+Vita+Wii U user base - number of people who own more than one from that list.

I actually can't wait to photograph my Lynx next to the Switch and compare sizes;-)

But yes, I agree that it was both the hardware and software that led to the Game Boy's success.

Soooo do y'all think the Vita audience and Vita-centric devs will migrate to the Switch?
I think there's a chance, likely most of not all will try to move to the ps4. The fact the switch is for all intents and purposes a portal ps4 (much more so than a vita) for these guys should make it tempting for them to at least try releasing software for It.

Whether they suceedd is another matter entirely

If the support is there and Nintendo's marketing in Japan is attractive enough I see the NS having absolutely no problems there getting huge.

Switch, PS4 and/or PC.
This being the Japan sales thread the latter two are niche. Earlier it was proposed that a hybrid NX could close the gap between the in Japan horribly unsuccessful home console market that dominates oversea, and the in Japan still healthier dedicated handheld gaming market that is getting irrelevant faster oversea. So far I have a hard time imagining Switch successfully fulfilling that proposed role as a bridge.

I can only imagine Capcom will put their full support behond the switch, because really what current success do they even have. If the let MH die on dedicate devices those are some pretty dire straits and the PS4 certainly won't be enough to support it.

MHS sold out again on Amazon.

New stock on Nov 5.

It depends if third parties are actually confident in Switch's success and whether it can serve whatever specific demographic the developer is aiming for.

I've seen quite a few people point out that Spike Chunsoft and From Software are on Nintendo's partner list but Spike Chunsoft developers first party games for Nintendo(Streetpass stuff and Pokémon Mystery Dungeon) and From Software develops the Monster Hunter Diary games. It might(/probably does) not mean Danganronpa and Dark Souls are Switch-bound.

On that note what's the reception to Switch been like on the Japan side of things?
I'm 50/50 on whether it will be more positive or negative

Wonderful 101?

yeah, I considered it, but w101 was 100% developed by platinum right?
And platinum isn't partially or fully owned by Nintendo like monolith or IS are. Nintendo just owns the IP.

I was thinking more internally developed games.

I can see why Nintendo will probably port like half their wiiu games to switch.

unless NX is garbage, I wouldn't be surprised if nuSplatoon is another million seller or in that area, even if it's a "port". So it's almost like, why not?

mario sonic at Rio as well. Though it had some legs.

Didn't some of those release digitally before retail? Not that it would've much of a difference.

Japan likes the wrong black swordsman.

In 17 years there's only been 3 Berserk games and the best one couldn't sell 100k, with one musou games do know this isn't very shocking.

What was our previous metric? This is considerably down from FF:E, was it Bravely?

Yeah I believe it was compared to Bravely Second. If those predictions are proven correct then it's in line or slightly better. Either way that would be pretty crappy for the game.

Although back then we were under the impression it was internally developed but I believe TOSE is heavily involved(but then again they usually are!).

On this note, were there any successes this year in terms of making either a new IP, a new licensed brand, or a new spin-off series in the dedicated space?

Monster Hunter Stories is certainly on the table with potential, but was there anything else?

Dragonball Fusions seems to have done well for itself. Had good reception and great legs.
