So, forgive me my ignorance. I know fuck all about this. Is the LG mentioned in the OP still the king? Or are there better ones released at this point?

i picked up the Asus PG348Q and got damn this monitor is official..no lightbleed issues or overclocking issues...definitely recommend it if you can stomach the cost

Right after Samsung announces some killer monitors LG strikes back with a new line of Ultra wide monitors!

With the stunner, if I read this right, being a 21:9, 3440x1600, 144hz free sync equipped monster!

Sweet lord is G-Sync losing ground to Free-sync? I have an Nvidia card. :(

Adaptive Sync became part of the VESA standard. Display makers don't have to include it, but they really lose nothing by adding it.

Adaptive sync (AMD calls it free-sync) is an open standard, and included in the new VESA standard.

I hope that it gains more ground and it forces NVIDIA to allow adaptive sync on their desktop GPU's. They already allow it on their mobile GPUs.

The smaller one is 144hz, there's some misinformation about whether that one is 1440p or 1080.
I was wondering about that the other day, don't have the link handy but someone on Reddit found LG's German listing for it. It seems to be a 1440 screen...but only does 144hz in 1080. My guess is that 3440x1440 at 144hz is beyond the display connection/bandwidth limits, I think DP 1.3/1.4 can handle it but I'm not sure there's anything out there that supports it for that. Like I think Polaris and Pascal have 1.3 or 1.4 listed but I don't know if that's just for expanded color and HDR or supports the full bandwidth and higher refresh and stuff.

Hi guys, I have a 4K 65' Samsung KU6300 TV.

What custom resolution should I use to play in 21/9?

(I tried two random resolutions and couldn't find a good match in FIFA 17 in 21/9 mode).

Thanks for your help!

Your TV is a 16:9 panel. You need a monitor/TV with a 21:9 aspect ratio, otherwise you'd introduce black bars and lose screen real estate.

You could still do this, I think, by creating a cusotm resolution in your Nvidia panel/AMD panel in which case it should be something like 3840x1646 ish?

Is the monitor in the OP still the "king" right now? I am looking to get one.

edit: Looks like it's not. Curious if there is a monitor that is good for gaming that isn't crazy expensive.

I've also been thinking of going ultrawide for a while now. My current desktop setup doesn't really allow for dual monitors and going wider would allow for some more screen real estate. I'm not looking to spend a fortune on one (preferably under 800€) since I also need a new GPU, so these seem to be my options:

iiyama ProLite XUB3490WQSU-B1
LG 34UM88C-P
AOC u3477Pqu
DELL UltraSharp U3415W
Samsung S34E790C

I've done some reading and the Samsung seems really interesting. It's the only one of those with a VA panel, and based on reviews and user comments there don't seem to be many downsides - I don't do graphical work so color shift isn't an issue for me. The LG has a higher refresh rate and Freesync, but I'm probably going with an Nvidia GPU for now. So I'm not looking for variable refresh rates (I'd love to, but alas..)

Any comments, recommendations (or recommendations to avoid) on these models?

edit: And if it wasn't clear I'm looking at 3440x1440 specifically, I'm not going to drop vertical resolution from what I currently have (1920x1200).

Completed recently.

Kinda overkill though, most games except at everything maximum is above 100fps with the exception of The Witcher 3. GTAV ran at a ludicrous 180fps, Crysis 3 at 135-140fps, Doom 2016 even teetering on 190-200fps on certain stages. Witcher 3 kept it sane at around 90fps, 75fps on certain scenes with long distance vistas to render.

Running on the Asus ROG Swift PG348Q at 3440x1440 100Hz.

Just for fun, tried running on Nvidia's DSR at 6880x2880, and got around 70-75fps at everything maximum.

Question for an expert:

I manage to display a proper 21:9 custom resolution on my TV, as long as I don't go fullscreen.
=> I set a 2560*1080 resolution on my nvidia control panel.
=> Then in Fifa I select 2560*1080.

It should work, and it does if I stay in a window mode. But if I go fullscreen it screws the ratio.

DOes anyone know why, and what I should you?

an option that works for me is in nVidia's control panel is to enter the option for adjust desktop and position

then select that scaling is done on GPU and check the option to overwrite the scaling mode set by games and programs

I was pleasantly surprised to find that the Trails in the Sky games (really old small studio Japanese PC games from 2004) supported ultra wide natively. You get some funny things happening like seeing characters off screen before they walk into a scene and one time I saw a "huge fort" that when the camera panned around during the cutscene you could see there was nothing behind the front wall.

Still a really good implementation for such an old game that I was not expecting to have the option.

yeah, I noticed Ys Origins has no problems displaying at 3440x1440. It's amazing.

You can thank XSEED for that. Almost all of the Falcom PC games they've brought to Steam have been modified for variable resolution support. The three Ys Napishtim engine games (Napishtim, Felghana, Origin) support ultrawide too.

No new posts in almost a month, no news of VA 1440p 144hz gysnc DP 1.3 "dream" monitors coming out anytime soon.

Ultrawide confirmed to be a fad. I'm sorry, everyone.

Ultrawide confirmed to be a fad. I'm sorry, everyone.

Here's what tftcentral posted the other day:

High refresh rate Ultra-wides - Away from those high end requirements LG.Display are also investing further in curved ultra-wide IPS panels. Of note is the planned 37.5" sized panel following on from those already available today, such as that used in the impressive LG 38UC99 display. These 37.5" panels offer a 3840 x 1600 resolution and 24:10 aspect ratio. While current panels are limited to 75Hz maximum refresh rate, a 144Hz compatible version is planned for Q4 2017 (so a long way away yet). This is expected to offer a 1000:1 contrast ratio, 300 cd/m2 brightness, 8-bit+FRC colour depth, sRGB gamut and 2300R curvature. 3840 x 1600 @ 144Hz will require bandwidth support beyond current DisplayPort 1.2 interfaces which will be a large reason for the delay in production for another year. At least it is planned!
Unfortunately it also appears from the latest roadmap that the planned 34" IPS panel at 3440 x 1440 resolution and 144Hz refresh rate may be delayed a little. We originally had this down for production in Q1 2017 but it looks like it might have been pushed back to Q3 2017 now. Again this delay is likely due to complications with utilising more modern DisplayPort interfaces than 1.2. As a reminder, this panel will offer 1000:1 contrast ratio, 300 cd/m2 brightness, 8-bit+FRC colour depth, sRGB gamut and 1900R curvature. It has a 3-side borderless design as well. Lower refresh rate versions are of course already available and widely used in the 34" market. The delay is with the hotly anticipated 144Hz refresh rate version.

The 34" 2560 x 1080 resolution IPS panel at 144Hz refresh rate is already in production now thankfully, supporting FreeSync, and we believe already used in the LG 34UC79G (review coming soon when we receive a unit). LG.Display are also planning to combine this panel with G-sync for 144Hz support which will apparently go in to development in January 2017. These 34" IPS panels offer a 1000:1 contrast ratio, 250 cd/m2 brightness, 8-bit colour depth, sRGB gamut and 3800R curvature. They also have a 3-side borderless design as well.

I'm personally waiting on either a good G-sync VA ultrawide, or the X34P.

Q3 2017 for LGs 34" 144hz is tragic news. :| Even though I'd rather not buy an IPS monitor.

What about those sweet AUO 34" VA 144hz panels? Any chance they make it in Acer / Asus monitors early(-ish) next year? Wait for CES 2017 and pray, I guess.

So I downgraded/upgraded? from a 4k Gsync Acer to a LG 34UM68, I was starting to have to set settings lower and lower on newer games, and I wanted to play in 21:9.

It is a 2560x1080 so I do miss the pixels while using windows, and gsync, but I have no trouble maxing out games again; and the ultra widescreen is awesome.

Ideally I would love the x34, but I'm not paying over a grand for a monitor right now. I rather get a new 4k TV instead.

IPS is also much better looking than the TN panel I had in the Acer.

I was actually thinking of getting a 2560x1080 Panel as well, but the Z35 G-Sync monitor instead. Games would probably look nice.

Here's an album of some pictures,

I wanted a 1440 ultrawide as well, but the prices were way too high, and after a few days with this 2560x1080 I feel comfortable in sidelining 4k for a while.

thanks. that actually looks great. I was afraid it would be pixelated but its only a bit less ppi then my 24" 16x10. Now I just need $300 for the monitor and $200 for the video card :\

It's beautiful - very very happy with it.

Given it a quick spin with Gsync on and 100Mhz refresh at Overwatch, Skyrim SE (manually changed the pref. file) and Witcher 3.

All look great; but is there anything I need to do or know with this - haven't changed any settings literally just plugged it in...how do I know if GSync is on etc and recommendations on settings?

Is there a software or something that upscales games to 21:9? Need advice!

I don't have a monitor calibration tool (next on the list).

Happy to be part of this ultrawide master race now :)

That looks pretty sweet, what model is it?

Where's the gsync version though.

I believe Samsung have stated their gaming monitors will have G-sync models next year.

http://www.pcgamesn.com/samsung/samsung-quantum-dot-gsync

It's the ASUS ROG SWIFT PG348Q 34'': https://www.asus.com/au/Monitors/ROG-SWIFT-PG348Q/

Stupid expensive but screw it - i'm in my gaming prime and work from home alot more these days so why not have best of both worlds.

My nearly 2yr old GTX980 runs things smoothly but I'll upgrade to a 1080ti next year to enjoy silky smooth everything on this screen.

I got mine two weeks ago and I am still astounded by how gnarly it looks! (In a good way)
Check out Flawless Widescreen program at http://www.wsgf.org/

These will be your best friends in supporting games that don't have native 21:9 such as Skyrim. Overwatch unfortunately has shitty 21:9 support and you actually lose real-estate by setting it to that resolution/ratio :(

I recently just switched to Nvidia, So i'm a noob myself (recently got a 1080). AFAIK to enable G-Sync in games you have to have V-sync on in game as well.
G-sync is on by default (in fullscreen applications only) to turn it on for windowed applications as well you must change it in the Manage 3D Settings in your GeForce settings.

I know this isnt a freesync thread, but recently got the LG 29UM68-P, and cant get freesync to work for the life of me.

When using the AMD freesync demo, it looks like its working, it eliminates tearing completely.

But cant get it to work at all in Rocket League and DOOM 2016. So annoying.

So I got my PG348Q setup today. Looks good, have some IPS glow, but I'm used to that from the IPS monitors I've owned so not terribly concerned about it, it's a trade-off I make in my computer monitors compared to my home theater equipment.

What are the proper settings to make sure Gsync is enabled?

I went and did the "Enable Gsync" button in Nvidia Control panel and it looks like it turned Vsync on in the nvidia control panel global settings. I guess I'm supposed to turn Vsync OFF in actual games and then that should be it?

Less of a gaming issue and more of a desktop usage issue, does anyone know of any software/plugin/etc for windows that can make apps open in 1/3 screenwidth size in the center or is there a windows shortcut key to do that? I can't stand that Chrome and everything else opens full screen and spread all over the place.

Thanks guys.

I bought a 2560x1080 monitor earlier this year, too, despite knowing that I'd be upgrading to a better PC by the end of the year or early next year. When I got my new PC a month or so ago, I went with one with a GTX 1070 and was able to save some money over buying a 1080. The PC runs every game I've tried maxed at 2560x1080 and 60 FPS or better and it looks absolutely fantastic. Exactly what I wanted. I'm in no rush to jump to 4K and will see where things are in a few more years. By that point it might be time for 8K anyway.

Spent some time gaming this weekend, going from my TV to my ultra wide playing FPS games the difference is crazy. Love this monitor so much.

OMG, how the hell did I live without this ultrawide monitor??!! Wow, I love this!!! So glad I decided on this rather than the regular 16:9 variants - even though the cost was outrageous.

I'm actually surprised how good the PS4 looks hooked up to it via the HDMI input too.

Picked up the ASUS PG348Q yesterday. After using a 1080p TN monitor for so long....my god this is already my favorite upgrade of all time. Colors are mind blowing and battlefield 1 in widescreen is on a whole new level of immersion. Super happy with my purchase already.

Can't wait for this bad boy to come in https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001IWOBGI/?tag=neogaf0e-20. The default stand takes up way too much room and this will fix that perfectly. Found out about it in another forum. I Want it set up exactly like this guy has it: http://i.imgur.com/ogwm5bo.jpg
