Polygon: "Don't Pre-Order Dishonored 2!" (Because there will be no pre-release review

I'm definitely getting it day 1 since I'm a fan of the series. Personally I wouldn't wait to see a review of a stealth game from Polygon to determine my purchase.

Has there been any word on PS4Pro improvements?

The only thing I heard is that it will have a pro patch. 4k scaling and HDR.

Both Dishonored and Dark Messiah are fantastic. I'll be astonished if Arkane manages to bungle this game.

Still not preordering though. I'd rather wait a few days for reviews than get stuck paying full price for a mediocre game.

You can grab it for $35-$40 on PC at some places.

Well congratulations! You got yourself caught!
Reminds me that I still need to play Brigmore Witches DLC before jumping into this. After the lackluster Deus Ex sequel, I am looking forward to Arkane's take on this genre again.

You're in for a treat. Some of the best missions in the game imo. If the upward arc from the main game to to the DLC continues into the second I'm expecting to be blown away.

Brigmore Witches is pretty great. Plus you will find out more about Deliah. Key character in Dishonored 2.

Weird that the base game is one of my favorite games of all time, but I just couldn't get into the DLC.

I didn't like a lot of the missions and didn't like some of the new enemy designs. The world building and environments were pretty good, but there was just too much readable documents everywhere and it got tiresome. The difficulty didn't feel tuned either. I play Dishonored at the highest difficulty, but the new difficulty options made the AI feel wonky and frustrating. I also was just not that into Daud's story, so it kept me from being invested in the plot.

This is fucked up. They shouldn't be able to list preview impressions/E3 awards as reviews.... because they're not reviews. That's like blatant false advertising / lying to the customer.

GMG has codes going out now.

Pre-ordered!

I really hope no one listens to Polygon and people just do what they want. Poor polygon not getting review codes early due to a Bethesda policy. Hopefully Bethesda decides to not send them any codes at all for D2 and future games.

Uh, what? I mean, sure, do what you want, but Polygon has a point here.

It's not just them being cry-babies. This is bad for the entire industry. If given the choice between no pre-release review and a pre-release review, which would you take? More informed consumers are good for gaming, bad for publishers who might want to try and sell a bad product.

I'm not saying Dishonored 2 will be bad (it'll probably be great), but come on, think about it.

I don't like the policy but obviously Bethesda knows more than we do. It must have shown so far that their games perform better at release with this sort of review embargo. I don't think they would do this to potentially hurt their sales. Apparently it does more good than harm.

Also, everyone has a choice in the matter if they want to preorder or not. I guess a similar thing could be said about Polygon making an article telling people to not preorder. It's kind of lame that a smaller IP gets shit on by Polygon, but they didn't do the same for DooM. I do think that Polygon worshipers will take their advice, which will likely stop a few initial sales.

It does less harm to Bethesda and more harm to the consumer, who doesn't get the opportunity to make an informed choice based on coverage (reviews, forum posts, youtube videos etc) of the full product BEFORE the product is officially released.

"Polygon worshipers"? WTF? This is about making an informed choice and not having to wait until after the game has released so everyone can safely partake in the release day hype train without getting ripped off.

It's really unfortunate that there are so many of you cannot remove Polygon from the substance here and are defending a practice that in no way benefits the consumer, you.

Please let that be true.
DOOM was the start of all this bullshit being pulled by Bethesda and has nothing to do with that irrelevant video.

It's fucking bewildering.

But... it's dishonored...
And it'll probably be great! But this practice is designed to keep consumers blind in the long run and it's only a matter of time till they start using it to pull off shady shit.

Realistically, the reason this was probably implemented is Fallout 4, which had real performance issues that publications made very apparent. This new practice will hide those issues. Happy preordering!

When you think about it, this is the perfect time to implement this practice because the games are turning out well, but for how long? Whatever though, it's Polygon, lets roll the dice and buy possible dog shit because we can't accept good advice from an outlet that hurt our feelings at some point.

That sad moment of self-realization when I realize I would pre-order this game blind if I at least knew the PC version was relatively polished and well optimized, nevermind anything about the gameplay or actual game content.

What have I become..?

I don't mind Polygon and I think as a general rule not pre-ordering is a good advice, but you can probably understand that some people are ok with it in this particular case because a) the developer has a decent track record and b) some websites and stores had really good deals if you pre-ordered.

Ah, I'm the worst. I pre-ordered it.
But I loved the first game so much. Probably, next to modded skyrim, my game of the generation.
Please don't be bad or broken.

I'm gonna post some impressions of the first hour or so at midnight Australian time (exactly 2.5 hours from this post). Will make a new thread.

Thanks, hoping for some good news for polish and optimization on PC. PS4 Pro hype has me leaning in for a PS4 purchase but if it's anything like the first game and my recent positive experiences on PC gaming with my laptop (i7-6700HQ+GTX 1060 6GB), PC will hands down be the way to go... Just assuming that Arkane didn't run into any major optimization issues.

Why do people care what other people spend their money on or when they want to spend it?

Ultimately everyone can do what they want/spend their money the way they wish. It's your life, and it's your money so feel free to do what you want. BUT, supporting anti-consumer policies like the one Bethesda is so inclined to pursue hurt us all in the end.

If we, as customers, show them this kind of thing is acceptable, more and more companies will do the same, like they did with in disc dlc, micro transaction bullshit, and so much more practices that aren't consumer friendly.

I love how this thread backfired, lol.
Now it's the Dishonored 2 pre-order hype thread. :)
Well, in the case of this particular game, I think people can be confident in its quality.

The bigger issue is technical performance. It has never been shown running particularly well which is concerning and now PC performance reports are suggesting bad things.

So, yeah...that's the real problem.

that's How I feel. Bombcast did a section on this letter from Bethesda as well.
