Rise of the Tomb Raider 20 Yr Anniversary Edition |OT| Hello from the other side

I just deleted the patch, reinstalled the game, and loaded my last save.

The frame rate is a perfect steady 30fps.

However, with patch 1.05, the frame rate stutters and judders randomly.

I'm disappointed because now I can't go back to 1.04.

Now it's either vanilla un-patched version with tons of input lag, or stuttery version with little to no input lag.

WHY DO THEY HAVE TO BREAK SOMETHING WHILE FIXING SOMETHING ELSE?

I made a gif of version 1.0 vs 1.05.

Here's retail disc (1.0):

Here's patch 1.05
http://imgur.com/a/LeSGB

Both GIFs were slowed down to 50% speed to eliminate any potential GIF-induced stutter.

Those pauses you see in 1.05 are really there when you're playing the game. It's horrible now!

Edit: Apparently they're turned into videos on imugr... I don't do this sort of thing very often. Sorry. Please click the links to see the videos.

I'm also noticing that motion blur seems to turn itself off randomly during the game. I don't know if this patch caused it though or if it has been like that since day one.

I don't like it! Why'd they have to mess with it again? 1.04 was perfectly acceptable!

Edit: I just quit to the main menu and loaded my game again and the motion blur that was missing is there now! What!

Man, the narrative in this game is... awful. The first TR had some issues, but the survival narrative overall was quite compelling. ROTTR's narrative is just.... silly.

And it has a lot of similarities to the narrative of Uncharted 2, and I'm experiencing it in a post-Uncharted 4 world, so I'm not really impressed by the visuals and gameplay to the level that I was with Uncharted 4.

Yeah, no kidding. I'm on twitter and saying I want one on both Square Enix and the official Tomb Raider account. Some people might think this is lame to complain about something like this, but I want my regular cases for my games. I do not care for special cases or steelbooks.

Asian version is what you are looking for.

This game is awesome. I waited this long to play it because I knew I was getting a new pc this year and it has been worth the wait. Might be my goty- definitely in the top 2.

This shit better not be happening when I get my pro tomorrow. This is the first game I plan on playing.

I wanted to check this out on the pro, but the game crashes as soon as I press options on the title screen.
After a few tries I reinstalled the game, paused the patch and it runs fine.
Patched it and again the game crashes on the title screen...
I read that it is a known problem, but is anyone else experiencing this? Or am I missing something here...

Story wise this is probably one of the most boring games I have played through in a while. Didn't care about the characters at all and nothing felt original.
Like the mysterious and ancient organisation Trinity - sorry they are just a generic merc squad here. Whatever.

At least the tombs and tomb environments were cool. Still a bit short generally but it's on the right track.

So glad there is a document about
Lara trapping the butler in the freezer
in Croft Manor. Being too intimidated to play the old games properly when I was a kid (watched my uncle play) I mostly messed around in the mansion and being able to do that was so funny to me at the time,

So now that I have my Pro I opened this bad baby up. I honestly haven't touched the single player yet because Endurance mode is so much fucking fun.

Is it safe to say that playing at 4K on the KS8000, Enriched mode does nothing at all for me and I assume thats for 1080p TV's only?

I've switched back and forth so far between all three modes and Enriched Visuals seems to be the least impressive.

I'm having problems with crashes all the time on ps4 pro. Only game I'm having problems with. I have no idea what the problem is, but there was another person in the ps4pro thread having crashing problems too.

This game locked up on my pro not too far in. I haven't gone back to it yet. WD2 also locked up the whole pro when I tried to close it. I hope this isn't going to continue.

I started a new game tonight on my Pro and the opening cinematic with the narration as it's panning by the camp is stuttering. Once it gets past this, it seems to be fine. Is this normal or is there something wrong with my Pro or copy of the game?

Man, they nailed the input-lag with 1.05. Tried non-patched ROTR on Pro. Damn, that input-lag. LOL!

After patch, it's awesome. Undetectable at 30 fps. At 60 fps it's more awesome.

The game looks so bad on a 4K screen when you select for framerate, and it's so framey when you select 4K.

Hopefully the framerate thing was a bug in the last patch... it wasn't this bad before.

Totally understand the other complaints this game gets, but the combat and traversal in this game is fantastic! Though I feel the combat distributed a little oddly throughout the game. So far, there haven't been enough times where you have to take down a big group. And don't get me started on the Tombs. I've only been to about three, but each one is amazing fun. They really make you stop to observe your surroundings, and I appreciate that!

I initially beat this for the Xbox One.

Got the PS4 PRo and went ahead and got this again.

The input lag was really noticeable for me on the xbox one, now it's so much better.

Add to that the spectacular 4k mode and geez, what a treat.

I do notice some FPS issues, but it isn't something that kills my enjoyment.

What's most bothersome about the fps is that it was introduced in the latest patch.

I was all set to pick this game from Target on Black Friday, but I decided they still don't deserve my money. I'll spend it on a game who devs didn't decide to fuck me over for a year. Sometime next year for $15 or less.

I'm playing this in 4K and it looks great. The 30fps doesn't bother me as much as it does on 60fps because at least it feels more stable and I get better IQ.

There is one thing that is driving me up a wall and it's kind of hard to explain. There's some sort of sound effect that's part of the ambience that happens about every 15 seconds. It's a high pitch squeaking that sounds a lot like lock picking (or maybe a door opening?) in Fallout 3/4 and I haaaaate it. Hopefully no one else can hear it because it's so damn annoying.

I thought we were past this?

I did too. I have put together my shopping list for Black Friday and RoTTR was definitely one games I was most excited about picking up, but now I'm salty again somehow. Oh well Titanfall 2 will likely get another sale now. I was talking to friend of mine and he said that he will never buy RoTTR or any other SE games again. At least I'm not that jaded.

This game is just incredible. I love it so much.

I think it completely Trumps UC4 when it comes to gameplay & I prefer Lara as a character.

Playing this on survivor extreme is so rewarding.

They need to disable this auto-center camera. It's so fucking bad. Obnoxious.

How many versions of this release are there. Is the artbook the only one you can buy, or does it come as just the game only? I got some argos vouchers and can grab this sub £25, but need to be sure its artbook edition. Not clear from the game case?

Are there no OG PS4 owners here? How are you not hating the frame rate downgrade after 1.05????

1.04 worked great. Now it's crap and now there's a glitch that makes the motion blur get disabled until you restart the game

Yeah I think the climbing is better in this, but the gunplay was better in Uncharted (there wasn't enough of it though) even after the patch, the guns don't feel great in Tomb Raider. I love the exploration and Tombs, i'd spend the whole game doing that.

Am I the only person that finds Lara a bad character? Firstly, she's boring. Secondly, I watched her in cutscenes wondering who the hell this person is, because some of the things she did made no sense to me. These people trust her and know she is a good person but I'm not seeing it in this game. It's not about ludonarrative dissonance, it's the actual plot.
When she captures Anna, Anna says 'killing an unarmed woman? That's cold even for you' which puzzles me because Lara is supposedly caring. Then she shot her with no hesitation, I was pretty much done with her as a character at this point. That's before getting into her plan for the Source, but that would probably take another 2 paragraphs of moaning to cover.

I could be being harsh but I find her dull, selfish and nonsensical. Apologies for the unscheduled rant lol. If the game wasn't trying to be so earnest maybe I could go along with it easier. I genuinely liked her in the first one so my u-turn was quite unexpected.

Artbook is only version right now as far as know in the U.S., but it may be different in other regions. It's the day one edition. Once that stock is depleted it will switch to a regular case.

Got the Blood Ties DLC the other day, enjoyed the little playthrough and collecting everything. Nice change of pace from the main game. I really hope they make a huge manor in the next TR game, with tons of secrets to find!

I was willing to overlook how uninspired the narrative was in the first game because CD was trying to find the right tone for their new take on the franchise, but the writing in Rise is just aggressively mediocre.

Tomb Raider never had great writing but it was pulpy and more or less limited to cutscenes at the beginning and end of levels.
In Rise there's so much storytelling between cinematics, audiologs, documents and most of all Lara constantly stating the obvious out loud. The worst is when you rest at a camp fire and she tells you exactly how she feels and why she's doing this when it's been made really obvious numerous times before. It's the opposite of show don't tell: here every characters has to say exactly why they're doing what they're doing at every chance they get.

It's so on the nose and all of it is just so bland and has been done a million times before. It's like a really shitty Syfy network show, trope after trope mixed with dialogue that feels like it's been generated by a robot and it's all made worse by how self serious it is. Lara's got zero personality, the side characters and antagonists are just as boring and the whole thing with the natives (in Siberia? who look and speak like Americans?) is so dull.

It really mires what's otherwise a solid game with a few gameplay issues (mediocre gunplay and an emphasis on collecting all kinds of crap for a game that just doesn't have the land mass to make it meaningful). Either go for a for minimalist approach to storytelling or hire some new writers because what we got in Rise has transcended blandness to become cringe-inducing.

I feel the exact same way.

I finished TR2013 because of it's core gameplay loop. I found everything else to be pretty fucking awful
Now, I have a PS4Pro and bought this for obvious reasons, but holy shit, I can't be bothered to even play it :(

I mean, people have a right to shit on UC4's badly paced (but excellent gameplay/gunplay), but at least it always had you by the nuts as far as characters and narrative.

This is the opposite of that for me :(

There is one example of this that I still can't believe.
She is on her way to rescue Jonah, so nearly at the final area, and at a campfire she mentions her mother for the first time in the whole game. We knew about her fathers obsession, we hear about it and see flashbacks numerous times, but there is no context, it just is. They choose to put this big plot point (to me at least) in a throwaway camp side monologue. No sir, just no. I could have gone along with an obsession with death because he lost his wife and she lost her mother. Why the hell wasn't that in the first hour of the game?

The characters telling us their motivations with bad dialogue just sucked any emotional investment out of it for me, the seriousness of it just makes it worse.

Honestly that scene just seemed like Classic Lara Croft to me which is why I loved it. Old Lara could hold someone at gunpoint and even shot someone at point blank yet also be someone who tries to help an injured man.

I do agree that the plot sucks. The plot in the old TRs weren't good either but they didn't take themselves so seriously the way Rise does.
