New Hunter x Hunter Anime |OT| of Hunters and adventure and NO MANGA SPOILERS

104-109 (actually skipped 101 before lol whoops)

-Cell is still getting rekt, but he is actually enjoying it?! Becoming protective of her too
-Cheetah guy is such a scrub
-Morel is a boss
-Man the scenes where Knov infiltrates the palace was so tense, its like the second half of Yorknew all over again
-Lion guy is such a scrub
-Looks like Palm got snatched up RIP. Hopefully she was just killed if that was the case, the villains gaining any intel would be bad for our heroes. The guards didn't say anything about it so maybe not
-Damn Knov looking like he just came out of office
-Its finally about to go down, bring on the fights
Cheetu hasn't even reached peak scrubness yet. I hope you like the sound of the narrators voice cause you're going to hear a fuck ton of it.

At 103 now

-I don't know, I still don't trust the chameleon dude. Gon is way too earnest

Meleoron's introduction is designed to make you think, like, three separate times back-to-back: "Oh shit! Gon, look out!"

...But then he ends up being a super awesome total bro.

Ooooh yeah

110-112

It started off hype but the fucking narrator keeps talking and interrupting the flow. Like I know he exists to explain what's happening on the screen but we don't need him explaining every little thing at the expense of progressing the story. Barely anything happened these past few epsiodes. Also, we spent like 3 minutes of Zeno talking to himself trying to hype up Netero when that could've easily been integrated within the flashback that immediately followed.

But yeah, not much to say besides that. Pito is crazy, Gon is crazy, old man hype, Celluem stay salty

Believe it or not Meruem isn't really salty with Komugi, he's honestly just confused as fuck with her...you'll see. Netero deserves to be hyped up though since at that moment in time you have no idea what he's really capable of. Pitou's my favorite of the Royal Guard, fuck that motherfucker Shia Lebeouf though.

Shiapouf and Youpi are just flat out boring as characters, to me.

It's bizarre how unlikable they can be when you can tell Togashi really put a lot of care into writing and designing Neferpitou.

I never get the love for Pitou, I think the development Youpi went through is the best of all three and Pouf is great because despite being the one who hates humans the most he's clearly the most human of them all in both design and temperament

Youpi is a boring meathead, but Shiapouf is a sly motherfucker and his conniving made the arc a hell of a lot more interesting.

I found him incredibly long winded and the bishounen style/humor wore thin quickly.
Then there was the episode with him and Morel where Morel literally stands around for 21 minutes thinking about whether or not he should do something and it ends up being completely moot, anyway.

Morel and Shiapouf are like...pacing poison.

Youpi just felt like a living punching bag so the protagonists always had something going on.

Yeah I'm still not seeing how Pitou is anymore complex than either two

I'm not really calling it/him/her more complex, it's more like the story just gives Pitou's character the most room to breathe and show off.
Of the three Royal Guards, she by far gets the best and most iconic moments.

Although, her interactions with Gon and reasoning and internal monologues during her "finale" give her more depth than I felt the other two ever really got.

I always found Pitou to be the more fun one, at least from an animation stand point, that and she had the most balanced personality. She was devoted on Youpi's level, but wasn't afraid to voice her opinion, but she never tried to outright fuck over Meruem like Pouf did a bunch of times. She always tried to act in Meruem's best interest, even towards the end. Even Youpi learned to have respect for mankind and Youpi was a fucking jock, dude couldn't even fly right in the beginning. It also helps that both Pitou and Youpi lack "Ohh OHHHHH OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!! Meruem-sama!! I can't handle your PRAISE!!!" moments.

It also probably helps that her actual final moments are actually on screen which both Youpi and Pouf clearly can't say.

But that's the thing. The others are the most human of them all. Pitou stays the most like an ant.

Not to say she herself doesn't become more human, you can see it in her interactions with Gon, and her apology to him.

I think it took her the longest to realize it. With Youpi he didn't really start getting his growth until he started fighting people and seeing their determination and camaraderie. Pouf came out the fucking womb being a dick in my opinion. I honestly think Pitou had the least amount of human interaction since she spent most her time with Meruem or trapped in a room with Gon, but I think even before that she started showing some human like qualities after her fight with Kite.

I wrote a post about it before, and someone boiled it down to that Pitou is Chaotic, Youpi is Neutral and Pouf is Lawful, in regards to Meruem. Pitou is Loyal but allows Meruem to develop habits and make requests that disrupt what the King is supposed to be, Youpi is Loyal to Meruem regardless of what the King is doing, killing humans or playing games with them, Youpi just does his job. Pouf is Loyal to the idea of the Ant King, and works to make sure Meruem stays the King, which is disrupted by the feelings and thoughts Meruem's interactions with Komugi (and Netero, unknown to Pouf) are bringing about. Conflicting ideals brought about by the same loyalty to one being.

It's very good.

This is why I preferred Pitou over Pouf. Pouf's ideals were just too rigid and inflexible to be really sustainable. Pitou was fluid and just allowed the dude to evolve, she didn't actively try to inhibit his growth as a living thing, which ended up making Meruem happier. Pouf would've freaked out over Meruem enjoying a god damn ice cream cone.

113-119

-Knuckle and Shoot are some real bros, straight up
-Lol cheetah
-Gon is getting more savage by the second. I definitely understand why, having to show mercy to the person who killed your friend, and for a very ironic reason at that. Don't think he should have lashed at Killua like that though
-I must have missed where crazy cat lady becomes slightly less crazy and more protective of someone besides the king, to the extent that she doesn't even care about fighting. I know it's for Meruem's sake but the change just felt a little weird
-Red guy is so boring, just die already. His whip attacks remind me of Parasyte combat
-You're telling me that this all happened in three minutes? Damn you anime time

So um...what happened to Cheetu? Gon didn't care about putting the pieces together in his head regarding the Chimera Ants, Killua did, that's why he doesn't have Gon's blind animosity towards them currently...Gon's not even close to at his worse yet though. Pitou became a little less crazy after fighting Kite because that's when she became a little enamored with mankind, I just don't think the anime shows much of her growth in that regard though. She's protective cause that's what Meruem wants. She lives to serve Meruem, the last thing she wants to do is disappoint him. The narrators speech practically distills time whenever he opens his mouth, that's why people complain about the pacing in this arc.

Dont want to break the flow of this thread but does the
Chimera Ant arc
ever end?

I loved the first 3 (Exam/Auction/Green Island), but this arc is dragging like some sort of Naruto filler on crack

Don't ever compare that arc to Naruto Shitpooden filler. It ends and if you have a soul it hits you like a brick.

Chimera Ant does suffer from some pacing issues, that's for sure. The arc would be one of the greatest in shounen history, if it was... maybe 5 to 10 episodes shorter (mostly cut/shorten some of the fat in the middle)? The pay-off is great, at any case.

As awesome as certain episodes are, it's a shame the pacing goes to complete hell during the latter part of that arc. It's still my favourite arc, but it's a big reason that keeps me from re-watching. I'm expecting a majority of the weekly Toonami viewers will get super frustrated around that time too.

On that note, is there a clip somewhere that has the English dub narrator? I remember the same narrator was used in earlier episodes from time to time, in the Japanese version atleast. Just wondering what kind of voice will be rambling about characters' thoughts non-stop in the future :p

Once Chimera Ant starts throwing its bombshells, it really clusters them together.
127 and 136 felt really really close to one another.

But yeah, it does take a while to get revved up. Because I watched it afterwards, it's weird to think that 52 episodes takes up a full year, I don't think I could've lasted

Pouf being very easy to hate and a major dick and everything doesn't mean he's a bad character.

There are two me's here: one that judges a character on gut, and the other that sorta thinks over it. Gut says I hate Pouf, but brain says Pouf still is a good character for how flawed he is.

Sure, 99% of the time I don't want to be friends with a Pouf in real life, but man do I love it when characters are allowed to have flaws the way Pouf, Gon, Kurapika, etc. are allowed to have.

Pouf being so rigid, so obsessive, so possessive, so jealous, so terrible for Meruem's development, and yes, so loyal is what makes him great, and a complete asshat that I dislike.

HStallion

Now what's the next step in your master plan?
As I said before the pacing isn't so much the issue outside of a few episodes but that there are like a dozen different plot threads going on at the same time revolving around a wide range of characters. Personally I didn't care as much for some of the side characters like Meloreon and some of the other Chimera Ant characters so those episodes could be a bit of a drag but they were essential for the emotional pay off at the end.

So pretty much Pouf is insectoid Pariston? I can't stand either of them, but I can't deny that they're very good multilayered characters. All Pouf wanted was for Meruem to be the king that Pouf wanted, not the king that Meruem himself ended up wanting to be. Who the fuck knows what Pariston wants though.

Did you like the Mr. Blonde Koala Bear?

People complain about the "pacing" of the Ant Arc but there is always something happening in episodes, sometimes multiple things happening.

Bad pacing is the One Piece anime where a 20 minute episode features maybe one event because they used less than a chapter for that episode. HxH almost always used at least 2 chapters.

Also I think order of events in the production of the Ant Arc in the anime had to shuffled because Netero's VA died, so I'm sure Netero stuff had to be delayed a bit.

He was actually my least favorite. Just a very odd character design even for the Chimera Ants and while he definitely evolves as a character just wasn't a big fan of his.

Yeah...I could see how he's a hard character to like. They all grew, but it seems the more likable ones came from likable human beings. I honestly didn't mind the octopus dude for starters or Cole I believe his name ended up being.

I like all the different characters doing their own battles and getting focus, but do they really need to linger on shots for so damn long or repeat animations a bunch of times.

Atleast most of it still looks really good so I guess it was one or the other

HStallion

Same here, but I think a second watch helps you analyze stuff better. Togashi really did put a good amount of detail into the characters.

I'd love to relive the Gon Vs Hisoka fight in Heaven's Arena. That first trade of blows with no sound was INTENSE

Finally able to catch up again

120-126

-Couldn't Morel just have made a clone to check what's happening outside the smoke wall?
-I feel like butterfly is going to betray the other guards
-Red guy transforms into some Pegasus knight thing? lol okay. Seems he evolved mentally as well...somehow
-Oh god Knov
-Cell just no selling Netero's attacks
-This Gyro biz better amount to something because last I recall there was a lengthy flashback on this dude only for him to just die unceremoniously. Now wolfie apparently has some relation to him
-Palm no :( At least she still has her sanity. Are those abilities she displayed new or did she have that already?
-Role reversal. Gon is 'calm' and in charge, and Pitou is shitting her pants. I'm liking this
-I liked how Cell vs Netes was essentially a battle of strategy, but the fight itself was just Cell getting slapped around repeatedly. At least Netero went out like a boss

You like Gon being "calm and in charge" until you don't. The stuff with Pitou and Gon really casts Gon in a different light in my opinion. He wanted vengeance regardless of consequences and that shit was fucking scary.

Well we already know how stubborn Gon is so this isn't anything unusual. Just the way he becomes so cold-blooded is what's interesting

127-130
-First half of 128 was...extremely weird
-So now he is even more powerful with new tricks. Humanity is doomed
-That girl is so lost lol
-Yeah he's been dead for a while now, sorry Gon. All that hope and optimism was for naught. It if means anything, Kite probably would've been killed anyway without you holding him back
-I'm curious what Pitou would've done had she not received that phone call

131
This was amazing. The animation, the music, all just gave you a sense of anger and dread. Probably that best thing to come out of this arc. Almost feel sorry for that total ass kicking she received. All that being said....what the hell just happened lol. Gon made himself age (same voice though) just so he could be able to finish her? How? He's all muscley and his hair is ridiculously long and his clothes don't fit, just what is this transformation lol. I had Biscuit in mind too but apparently this is different. He's also on par with Cell power wise now. The way he just repeatedly bashed her head in was so brutal too. And he used his dismembered arm to pin her. Life lesson here, don't make Gon angry. Killua knew

I liked the build-up to Gon's transformation more than the transformation itself. Episodes upon episodes (upon episodes. Good lord this arc was long) of that intense stare.

Gon pretty much gave into his guilt ridden despair and sacrificed his nen for a one time power boost. That was the complete opposite of going super saiyan, Gon fucking really just wanted to die. It's one of my favorite moments, but god damn Gon stopped being my favorite after that shit. He's a Shonen protag with a fucking dark streak if you tap into it too much. In the manga thread I theorized that him and Kurapika pretty much have the potential to be the next Phantom Troupe leaders. With Kurapika being Chrollo and Gon being Uvogin.

Gon did the same thing Kurapika did, only instead of Conjuring a Chain that only works on a specific group of people under threat of death, Gon Enhanced himself to kill 1 particular being and sacrificed himself to do it. Their Nen responded in similar ways but in wildly different degrees, but both fueled by intense anger.

Gon's transformation is one of the GOAT anime moments for me.

Yep, I love that transformation so much that I got the Gon-San Bandai figure.

Edit: Lol Hunter x Hunter Blu-Ray ads in this thread. I really want to see HxH in that level of quality, but the price is so steep for 13 episodes . . .
