Danganronpa Community Thread: Thrills! Chills! Kills! Despair!

Looks like Famitsu leaks reveal some of the new minigames and OH GOD NO, HANGMAN'S GAMBIT 3.0 UUUUUGGGGGHHHHHHHH

One of them looks like they replaced the snowboarding logic game with....some sort of Outrun style game.

If they're gonna double down on stupid abstraction for the trials, they at least better be good mechanically. I'm becoming less and less tolerant of them and how they so relentlessly destroy the pace of the trials. I'd be happy if they were even just relegated to the investigation sequences.

Just started the Despair arc of 3. Loved episode 1. I should watch all of this then watch Future, right?
(The dub is great so far, though I think a few VAs are gone...)

ahahahahaha you have to fucking shine a light on the letters in hangman's gambit 3.0 to see what letter they are pfahahahahahahaha
When I read that was when all hope was lost. I believe in Japanese it is a simpler mechanic as kanji are used, but in English the thing can become too chaotic for its own good.

But Despair takes place first?...

As with all things Danganronpa, release order is vital. Future>Despair>Future...
And finally, Hope.

"HMMMMMM, HOW CAN WE MAKE HANGMAN'S GAMBIT EVEN MORE INFURIATING?!?"

Jesus, the ONE mini-game I absolutely hated from DR2 & they somehow make it worse.

I don't really remember having much of an issue with (Improved) Hangman's Gambit, especially after realizing I could use Concentration during it.

I think the problem comes when people want to Platinum their games, and so need to finish a trial without damage. The chaos that involves IHG in DR2 makes it depedent on luck.

Aside from that, it is an annoyance in higher difficulties even when simply trying to play through the game.

YES, that is exactly the issue. Half the time, a letter would clash with another letting coming in from the edge, but there's NO way to see/anticipate it coming, so most of the time, the damage you take is one letter trying to leave while another letter that you can't really see is trying to enter.

Have both shows completed? Does it really work to watch them that way? I kind of wanted to stick with the Despair cast the whole way through.

It's meant to be watched in airing order. Events in one of them will inform/foreshadow events in the other. So watch it as Future 1>Despair 1>Future 2>Despair 2 all the way up to Future 11>Despair 11>Future 12>Hope.

Both shows lean on each other to tell the entire story, although I would say that Future leans more on Despair than viceversa. The pacing was intended to be that way, as developments in both story arcs may seem sudden if treated separately.

So I've heard.
Let's ignore for a moment the pace-breaking problems people have with the minigames beyond the Discussion and the Climax Reasoning ones.

The main problem is the foundation of both languages. Japanese can relay more ideas with fewer symbols (katakana, hiragana or kanji), while Western languages based on the latin alphabet use letters instead of representations of phonetical constructs - as those ones are rather phrase-based. Just compare the minigame in Chapter 5 of Danganronpa 2:
The complexity increase of the localization is quite notorious, but simply unavoidable when considering how words are made up in each language. There's a need for syllables in each space, but there's also the problem of adapting the game code to interact correctly with longer chunks of data and remaking the UI to make it workable. I'd have expected that they thought about the Western public since the series became international, but it seems the gameplay still plays to the strengths of Japanese (in this case).

Sorry if this has been asked but I'm trying to remain spoiler free. Is the Danganronpa 3 anime done airing yet? I want to watch all of it back to back. I heard crunchyroll or funimation was doing a english dub as well and would like to watch it that way. Is it finished?

It's finished. You're supposed to alternate between the two series, one of Future and one of Despair, ending with Hope.

Whoever put the order of episodes on Funimation's site as having Hope between the end of Despair and the start of Future is evil.

A new trailer for V3 was just posted. It focuses on the characters shown in the latest Famitsu, but it looks like it also shows a snippet of a panicked argument mechanic (maybe the new MTB/PTA)

It seems like the soundtrack will remix the themes from the previous games instead of plainly using them, but I hope we get a more substantial amount of new music in the new storyline.
But a New World Order remix won't hurt at all.

Is that a fucking purple Fanta?

I'd say it isn't.

For the most part it's fine, but it hasn't really added anything that's super interesting or worth it from a Danganronpa perspective. Every now and then they trot out a FF member or show a new Ult./SHSL, but until the last chapter nothing that I felt was major. Although all the last chapter did was reveal that
there were some clones of Mukuro
, which I thought was a lazy grab for attention and lame, but ymmv.

It isn't a bad series, but it's also not amazing and doesn't feel must read for a DR fan. It's short if you feel compelled to experience everything canon, but with the end of the HPA arc and after how DR3 ended I feel sort of down on the whole thing and not all that interested in keeping up myself.

A month has passed and I still wish I could win the lottery, buy out Chunsoft and do a Disney Star Wars thing and declare that only DR1 and 2 are canon.

Alright, thanks for the replies. Don't think I'll look into it then. At least, not anytime soon.

I remember people talking about how Killer Killer was definitely going to tie into DR3 somehow. Pretty sure that never happened.

lol it didn't

Killer Killer is this curious thing where it starts off as a middling but over-the-top side story, and doesn't get much more interesting than that until
the last two chapters,
where it gets mildly intriguing.

Honestly, I would have preferred to see a detailed, animated Killer Killer with a proper plot and a manga tie-in for DR3. For all its spectacle and whatnot, I feel like KK would have been at least more enjoyable.

Kodaka teased that it might tie into the anime and was supplementary to it, but that never actually panned out. Certainly not in any interesting way. The only relevant thing was that it gave us a heads up that Juzo hated Makoto and was a bit of an ass, but all that was revealed in the very first episode of the anime.

Good to see further confirmation that they are actually remixing the current music instead of just using it like in DR2, but I hope the game gets new soundtrack beyond the one used in the new mechanics.

As for the snippets themselves, is good to see that Takada hasn't lost his touch. I don't think a soundtrack of his has ever disappointed me.

Danganronpa Another Episode is coming to PS4. I'm sure a Steam announcement is around the corner.

Now all of the games will be available on PS4. Not interested in getting this now, but maybe when it's cheaper.

Seeing their recent modus operandi, I expect a PC announcement by Spike Chunsoft soonish. The biggest thing for me would be a better control scheme, as the original one was adequate at best and annoying at worst.

Looking at their string of releases as of late, I totally expect a V3 announcement for the West early next year with SC handling Steam porting duties.

LE seems to be the same as well.

All I know is, more people to discover what happens near the end of Ch. 3.

While looking around Reddit I managed to find out that Dengeki Online made an interview with the producers of both Danganronpa and Ace Attorney. It was thankfully translated here.

It is really interesting to see how people involved with series with similar mechanics see each other works and approaches to the genre, and the workflows involved in the creation of entries in those franchises. Worth a read in my opinion, but don't expect anything concerning the upcoming V3. Also, it seems to include a reference to an event happening in SoJ, but as I haven't played the game yet I fail to see if its spoilery or not as I lack the context.

I'm liking the vibe of that music.

Just checked the Danganronpa subreddit. I hadn't seen this Limited Edition box art before:

This is kind of worrying about Kaede staying the protagonist... Not that I would mind a protag switch if done well, mind you :p

Hope it's all a red herring though.

That said, I love the way this looks.
