wait so are you getting the game or not now i cant keep up with all these changes just before release

maybe. i'll continue playing JD every now and then until the December patch and if i feel like i really want to explore the rest of the world by then i'll get it.

the major thing that's killing me is the game doesn't become more fantastical than what we've already seen, so i'm not sure if there's much to look forward to.

It hurts, man. Hurts even more to see people who hated XIII saying that XIII-2 was a huge improvement. I never asked for this.

The only thing OG XIII does better than its sequel is its difficulty. XIII-2 is the superior game in every other respect.

Why does wait mode make it easier?

Easy to stop and plan your next move or tactic instead of needing to do it on the fly. Kinda like the difference between enemies attacking you in VII while you made commands or everything pausing while you did it?

Noooo so the world is smaller than we thought, wow SE truly fucked up, why the hell would this game take so long to make if its a small open world? I was expecting GTA type of openworld :(

This game has been in development since like forever and they cant even get the open world big enough.

Personally I think that is fantastic news, I never asked for an open world in Final Fantasy, to be honest i'm tired of them in general. I think the Witcher 3 broke me, don't get me wrong I love the Witcher but I do not need more open world games.

Correct!

If this is a big holdup for a lot of the impressions then that gives me less to worry about because I am over Western open world design as well. I liked MGSV's take on it and I think I'll like this game's too.

XIII also looked way better. I'd also argue for soundtrack and story, but I can see people preferring XIII-2 for those aspects.

Man, it's such a shame that XIII-2 dropped the difficulty ball so hard. All the little gameplay improvements that XIII-2 made feel completely wasted because you overlevel things without even trying and start just crushing enemy health bars before you can even Stagger them. Faster Paradigm Shifts and deeper team customization feel hollow when there's no enemies worth actually optimizing them against.

I also wish the DLC wasn't so obviously cut out of the game.

Serendipity in the base game with some mini-games, yes.
But when you check the tables out it's like "Buy our DLC!"

Same with the Coliseum, you go there for the story and that's it, yet there's a crapton of DLC fights there.

And then there's Requiem of the Goddess, oy.

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
FFXIII made me appreciate how its story was better and understandable than XIII-2 and LR:FFXIII.

LR:FFXIII is one big pile of mess... But at least the ending CG was great!

Gameplay-wise and side content wise, my favorite of the trilogy. Well, maybe XIII-2 with the side content including the DLC.
The story though, not a shining spot even if I enjoyed it.

To those who have it, has the lock on been changed from the JD demo? Holding R1 and pushing R3 is... absurd imo.

It wasn't exactly great in either but XIII story was the better of the two, and Sazh and Fang are better characters than anyone in XIII-2

Seriously. If this ends up anything like XII, it'll be my GOTY. XII HD can't come soon enough.

I'm there with you, aside from FFXV possibly being my GOTY.
FFXII vanilla has been one of my favorites since release, and I've always wanted to play IZJS.
I'm glad they are doing The Zodiac Age now after FFX/X-2 HD.

FFXIII-2 uses words like "Timeline" and "paradox" a lot but at its core i find it easier to relate to Caius as a villain and appreciate his dynamic with Noel way more than all the crap going on in FXIII, which is why i like that story more. Serah is still annoying though...

Personally I'm not concerned with the length, considering I've spent almost 20 hours with the judgment demo, lol.

I'm one of those who do everything and explore all the places.

Same. I also don't need the game to be ungodly massive. I'm really liking the sound of the combat and hunts, plus if the story goes into overdrive later, that's cool. And I can't wait to hear the full soundtrack.

I need more info on the post game too!

I understood the story of XIII better than XIII-2. I still have no idea what XIII-2 was about, it was a load of gibberish to me.

Man, Caius was great, I really liked him.

I got two more outfits personally.

Less than I hoped, more than I feared. I'm ok with this.

Given the impressions, I'm inclined to believe that the 81-84 range is where it'll end up falling in.

Garbage stories haven't prevented other games from achieving higher meta scores (Fallout 4, literally most WRPGs outside Witcher 3 for the mainstream audience) but I suspect the JRPG nature of the game alongside some gameplay aspects will bring the score down.

Edit: Er... Let me change that to a 76-79 range actually.

You think this will score lower than XIII? LOL.I expect between 85-90 meta. Press impressions of the first 15 hours were decidedly positive across the board. And given the very positive impressions about the endgame, I don't expect reviewers to suddenly change their minds.

You can think whatever you want but reviewers in general have been much harsher this generation and very few games have hit a 90 meta. If the story is as bad as some say and the combat is divisive then it's easy to expect something in the 70 range. Either way the review thread is going to be legendary.

Both TW3 and MGSV got 90+ though, with one having terrible gameplay and the other having terrible story. Reviewers are not harsher. Games are getting worse that's all.

They don't have to change their minds. It's entirely possible, and I believe likely, that the text will talk about a better game than FFXIII, but the scores won't. Review scores got generally lower since then, and I think that's a good thing.

Games are getting worse that's all.

I can't disagree with that, to be fair.

This. You have also been in contact with a noteable reviewer as well right?

I really don't see these guys all of a sudden backtracking on all of their positivity, especially if the game only gets better towards the end

Posters are expecting these impressions to align with reviewers, so let's see how it goes.

FXIII came out at the height of the 70-100 scale score inflation era of reviews. Things are generally a lot more critical these days.

Man, Caius was great, I really liked him.

I really hope they put him in Dissidia as Lightnings rival rather than any of the forgettables from FFXIII. I can bet Cid Raines or Barthandelus would be the least played characters...

MGSV's was an absolutely pointless open world. Nothing to do but run endlessly from base to base. I don't get how you say you like that but are over western open worlds, Which, in Witcher 3's case, is chock full of varied points of interest.

Well, i just went all-in. *sigh* Bought Kingsglaive Brulay standard, the Day One PS4 game and the Collector's Guide because i'm a sucker for them :)

Now i just hope the postie will get them through my letterbox next week. I did order them separately so they will hopefully arrive in smaller packages. Woot! I'm looking forward to this, i just have to finish up with Nep-Nep and i'm set. Dishonoured & WD2 will have to wait for my extended christmas break :)

One, yes. I don't want to give the impression I'm some guy involved with multiple industry mainstays.

For what it's worth, I've heard from two others (non reviewer types, but with connections) that it's being very well received among gaming press.

Im gonna say 90+. There are games with way worse story/optimization/combat that have received 90+ meta recently

Not even close. I already had a bet that this won't beat FF13.

And if Witcher 3 is an example of games getting worse, I can't wait for them to get even shittier.

Bad story, ok gameplay, hideous graphic, no optimization and all the glitches in the world. I seriously don't know where the "reviewers are harsher" conclusion comes from.

Every now and then a Shadow of Mordor ot Fallout 4 shows up.

I don't get it. I never will.

People don't wanna say the real answer..games aren't hitting those highs like they use too

not a single impression mentions summons which are critical to nearly every FF......da fuq!!!!!
Out of the ones I played only time they were critical was X and Xiii

Exactly. All the people presenting the "harsher reviews" argument just doesn't realize that most games have been booty this gen.

That, and they are just projecting their pessimistic attitude towards the game onto the press.

was summons really that critical in XIII? I remember using it few times but they were mostly just to heal my party members....

I see a lot of praise for the monster gallery and optional hunts. For hunts, are we talking just larger re-skins of enemies you fight in the main game? Seems like that's how it usually is. Or are there actual unique creatures?
