Rise of the Tomb Raider 20 Yr Anniversary Edition |OT| Hello from the other side

Honestly that scene just seemed like Classic Lara Croft to me which is why I loved it. Old Lara could hold someone at gunpoint and even shot someone at point blank yet also be someone who tries to help an injured man.

I do agree that the plot sucks. The plot in the old TRs weren't good either but they didn't take themselves so seriously the way Rise does.

lol, I love how she had shot the guy about 4 times before she held him at gunpoint, an interesting interrogation technique. Lara had some sass then, I think that is what I miss in the new games. I wish they would play up the Lady of the Manor thing, this Lara isn't an aristocrat. Or at least she doesn't act like one, she is all grounded. Yawn.

The Tomb Raider movies were bad, but Angelina Jolie riding side saddle was pretty cool. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V-uCnWnmtyA

bib. I think that is the real issue for me, this type of behaviour is out of place with painfully serious story they have here, because that means you have to actually consider the real implications of her actions.

Are the trophies glitched on this?

Trying for the platinum and I beat the game (Survivor) and just last night finished 100% every area but it looks like some trophies didnt pop...

Finished a second playthrough (first time was on Xbox) and this is easily one of my biggest treats for the year and will be up there on the ole GOTY list.

Playing it slowly, exploring as much as was fun (all tombs, and most but not all of the collectibles and challenges), no survival instincts, and only bringing up the map if I was well and truly lost was my style, and I'd highly recommend it. The fixes to the deadzones and lag on the PS4 version make a huge difference and for the first time I was able to have a lot of fun with the combat scenarios. Being a second playthrough helped too, as I got to experiment more with the skills I avoided before.

The overall story was OK, but I found myself more interested in the mini-stories you'd follow from finding scrolls and the like. There's a lot to find, and each collectible seemed like they put some care and thought into it.

Was so hooked I played through the campaign, DLC, all of the expedition modes and started up a new campaign on the hardest difficulty that will be fun to return to from time to time.

And the game is fucking gorgeous, pro-patch or not. Its still a looker.

Gotta give Crystal and Nixxes some real credit here, because they've completely turned me around on this series from my crushing disappointment with TR2013. Its not classic Tomb Raider, but its a great game in its own right and I'm all in for the next one, especially if they continue to add more tombs and further tombify the open world hubs.

Also gotta add - i played this on XBone at the start of the year - sold that console and picked up a PS4 Pro since...

The game was a 3/10 on xbox for me...on PS4 its a strong 9/10 and contending for my GOTY (vs Dark Souls 3).

After playing this for a while (about 50% through), I'm not sure how I feel about it. The story, voice acting, dialogue, and lore is really sub-par. The set pieces are a far cry from Uncharted 4s. The amount of collectibles everywhere is actually starting to get annoying (including the constant XP notifications). There are so many I've stopped reading all the documents. Like 30 in a tiny area, really? The constant grunting reminds me of watching tennis. You have survival instincts that you want to constantly use if you don't want to miss anything but ruin the beautiful graphics.

But the game play itself is actually pretty fun (albiet I might have the difficulty too low). Hunting and fighting with the bow is great. The platforming puzzles are better than Uncharted 4s but platforming while fighting isn't nearly as fluid. It looks great (not using U4 as a standard).

I just see myself after a few more hours just stopping altogether. The story isn't enough to pull me through and the collect-a-thon is wearing on me.

It just borrows so much stuff from Uncharted and doesn't do them as well that it sticks out like a sore thumb. If it tried to be more different I think it would have been more fun.

There's definitely a lot of collecting, but I find it infinitely better than UC4 and not overly similar to it. UC4 was all about endless walking and talking and boring borin BORING endless pointless climbing and platforming that controls itself. "Find the next thing to grab" wheres waldo eyestrain. I fucking hate UC4 and I like TR.

I'm persevering with this on Pro. I enjoyed the 2013 reboot a lot, but I'm struggling to really get into this one. The whole 'save the villagers' thread is so half baked, it feels so condescending if that's the right word, so sort of Great White Hope. The entirety of the story so far has been irritating more than anything, not helped by the terrible voice acting. There's just too much shooting too, I get that this is what tomb raider does now, but it's not a particularly competent or punchy third person shooter, it feels very clunky, very awkward and it's all the fucking time, yay more guys to gun down, and another lot. And some more! It's constant.

I've just cleared Geothermal Valley so hopefully it will pick up a bit but I suspect not. My favourite bit has been Croft Manor; just Lara, exploration, puzzles, gentle story, bags of atmosphere.

After finishing it I have basically two requests for the sequel: get a new writing staff and make it an actual open world instead of small to medium inter-connected maps like in MGS3. Have some linear sections for story stuff if you want, but cramming so many damn collectibles and resources on such small maps is stupid. There's no need to ever go look for stuff because you're constantly mashing square or X to pick stuff up.

The story and dialogue remained terrible right until the very end. It might actually be one of the worst narrative I've seen in recent years because it's not even dumb enough to be fun. It's cliché after cliché with the most boring cast of characters I've seen since TR 2013.

I'm still hopeful for Shadow of the TR because
Mexico
is a cool setting, but I don't think Eidos Montréal can afford to simply follow Crystal Dynamics' blueprint. They really need to shake things up with the next one.

I'm like 6 or 7 hours in and while I think the game is fun and I like Lara's character, every other character fucking sucks and the story in general is terrible and boring... I mean.. I just don't get it. If you're going to make an AAA game why not hire writer(s) who are competent enough to write something at least decent? How hard could it be?

I do like Lara herself, though, she just needs to be in a better story

The game is stunning to look at. There is a fantastic sense of exploration and discovery. I also don't think I agree with the comments about it being too "shooter heavy", I actually feel like there'a a better balance between combat and everything else. I don't feel like it's throwing one encounter after another at you. The game is very good at enticing you to look for things, collect treasures and documents, and the tombs feel very authentic and plausible; when you venture into one you truly feel like you're in this "otherworldly" place.

Having said that, the game is dragged down immensely by the atrocious writing, tepid storyline, and uninteresting characters. Unlike TR 2013, Lara feels very one-note and there's no sense of evolution in the character. The really odd title is made even more awkward by the fact that it doesn't feel relevant or earned.

It's fun and addicting gameplay mixed with a really unfortunate story.

Been waiting so long to pick this up. Can't wait to play it on Pro but can't bring myself to pay over the odds for it when I've seen it for as little as £12 on the Xbone

Nah, pace is one of the best things about the game, it's moving ahead briskly without the usual fluff of open worlds and is still of substantial length.

Is there a reason so much shit was unlocked for me when I started? There were like a dozen outfits to choose from at the first campsite. It kind of makes the collecting feel pointless. "Oh cool I finally got a new bow!... that's worse than 3 of the 5 I started with."

Well I finished it and did a bunch of post game stuff. Finishing off the optional tombs and some of the "puzzles" required to get all the collectibles in Baba Yaga were really fun.

Great game in its own right, but still stand by what I said earlier, it can't get out of Uncharted 4s shadow. The story and VA were absolutely horrendous. Using the bow is still extremely fun and the world was more fun to re-visit than Uncharted 4. Definitely a better sandbox game but ultimately not a complete package.

Finished the game and want to know how I can play the main campaign with the classic Lara Skin. So far I can only choose it if I continue after the main campaign ends.

TR 2013 was a game I went back and finished 3 different times (PS3 for 100%, again on PS3 for the story, and on PS4 for 100% I THINK? Can't remember)

Not sure if I'll be going back to this one. The story just isn't there. The pacing in TR 2013 was even better and the story more compelling.

I hope I can 100% Rise of the Tomb Raider but I still want to get to Watch Dogs 2 and Mad Max.

Finished the main story yesterday and... can anybody remind me why I've gone through all those jumps/corridors/traps/
"immortals"
to get to the
divine source
when
apparently all it sufficed was BLASTING IN FROM THE SKY WITH A HELICOPTER??

Couldn't believe it.

Also
surely there are ways not to invalidate his father's work even after destroying the source? That whole "choose for mankind or for your family's pride" was kinda forced.

Where were you going to get a helicopter? You've been stuck up there alone for days at that point, minimum. No contact with the outside world at all.

TRINITY has a helicopter, but they still had to figure out where they were even going.

I'm not saying Lara
should've used a helicopter. I'm saying TRINITY shouldn't have, as it effectively invalidates all your tribulations to get to a supposedly legendary and impossibly hidden city in the heart of a glacier.

Storming in guns blazing with a helicopter is the weakest plot device I could imagine to get trinity to the "pivotal moment" of the grand finale.

Also,
why did they send all those trinity men to die if they just had to pinpoint the city location and get in by blowing up the glacier?

I loved the gameplay, but I find the plot of the lowest action movie tier possible.

I agree. Open world would be a big mistake! The structure of those new TR games is totally fine!

Yes the game really balanced the fine line between openness and linearity, and often managed to grab the positive things associated with both. We have plenty of open world games, the hub design is perfect for this though.

They literally didn't know where anything they were looking for was.

That's like asking why you play any game at all instead of just shooting the last boss - the journey has to lead you there first.

That's not at all what I'm saying.

Again, I'm not saying LARA
should've used that helicopter. Wouldn't make sense to jump to the last level that way, now, would it?

I'm saying using the helicopter as deus ex machina to get trinity to the final level was as cheap as it can get, as far as plot goes. Especially if they have to blow up a thousand year old glacier to do it.

It's dumb, and it shits on your efforts to get there. Surely they could've devised something less trope-y.
For instance, following you inside the glacier, since you've basically cleaned it inside out of any "immortals"

I know you're not saying Lara, read what I wrote ffs.

They basically did follow you through with the immortals and all of that, then once they know where they're going and that it's inside the glacier, is it THAT surprising they'd get a helicopter and bust in?

Hey, once I know the easier way to get somewhere, I'll probably use that too! The timing it to be an epic boss battle is highly coincidental, but it's an action movie script, of course it is, it wouldn't be very exciting if they beat you to the artifact or if they got there too late.

It's a rote Droopy the Dog plot, just like many movies like national treasure and even indiana jones, and other games like uncharted. No matter how far down into an undiscovered tomb you go, the bad guy is always literally ready to pop out from behind a pillar whenever the plot requires it.

I love this type of game (100%ed both this and TR2013, love uncharted), but I roll my eyes every time this stuff happens. Perhaps there is simply no good way to square the idea of you exploring undiscovered areas *and* still maintain a conflict with a central antagonist. I'd like to see them try harder though

I didn't really get that aspect either,
she wanted proof.... and then what? What grand plan did she have to make the world better? Did she really think she could keep it safe and only in the hands of people with pure motives? Maybe she didn't think that far ahead, but having a number of scenes with Jacob discussing it was frustrating because he was completely in the right and she was having non of it.

I try not to compare the game to Uncharted, but
did anyone else think the devs recently played Uncharted 2's last boss? The last area was straight out of Uncharted 2, I was really quite surprised by it, right down to the blue flames, and shooting nearby sources of the flames to damage enemies.

Has there been any word on fixing the frame pacing that was broken with the 1.05 update?
Seems like most people in this thread don't notice it or care... hopefully the dev cares -- I'd like to finish the game.

I just started playing this version last night since I wanted a game I hadn’t finished to play on our new TV/PS4 Pro. The frame pacing is irritating, but sitting at my normal distance makes it less noticeable. Enough that I can play.

I caught up to where I stopped playing on Xbox One, which was right after doing the cistern tomb in the Soviet installation. I’m having a good time. It looks really nicest 4K.

Yeah I'm with some of the others, I loved Tomb Raider 2013, didn't really understand all the hate the story was getting. Like it wasn't great but it was really effective imo. A desperate struggle for survival, where you had to shadow a group to learn how to get off the island and then discover something else.

This game though. Sheesh. Lara has daddy issues (yawn), we're following some nefarious group called Trinity (eyeroll) who's following some other dude (whatevs) for no apparent reason, and then there's some noble savages that we do a mighty whitey on (boring). It's so cliche, it does absolutely nothing for me.

I just got the game two days ago on Pro and I can definitely notice it. Playing in 4k mode. Game looks awesome, but you can feel that the 'butter' is missing when you're running, especially.

BTW game is 35 bucks all over right now. Time to get it.

I haven't seen anyone else mention it either, to me it's the most blatant similarity I have seen. I'm including the set pieces from the 2013 reboot as well. I have major issues with the story and Lara as a character but I felt it was less like Uncharted than the last one, then I reached this section and it totally took me out of it.

A great game with an atrocious story.
Who wrote this terrible plot and characters? Jesus, this could be the worst videogame story of the last years.

Crysis 2 and 3 will always take the cake for me but yeah, ROTTR is pretty bad. I will say the characters are slightly more bearable than the last TR game. Maybe it was just the acting, I can't remember anything of note about them.
