3DS HOMEBREW Discussion Thread [exploits/carts/applications/games]

Just to be clear, if I WANT to move my NNID from my old White N3DS to my new Black N3DS, then the current method is pretty much perfect, right?

If it works like I think, then I would end up with my current NNID on my Black N3DS and no NNID on my White N3DS. Then, if I wanted to give that one to my wife, I could just make a new NNID?

So I just talked to my little brother in New Zealand who got himself a 2DS. He's updated the firmware and everything to get online, not knowing about the Homebrew scene. He didn't even know the system was region locked.

I'd love to let him borrow some of my US 3DS games, is there some kind of trick or exploit he can still use to do that? How?

So I have an old 3ds XL on 9.9.something. Can I use this to hack the BF New 3ds? If so, what guide should I follow? Things have changed since I last toyed around.

I use Menuhax with Luma and an unlinked sysnand/emunand. Am I OK to create an NNID without any issues on just my emunand?

Got Cubic Ninja setup on the New 3ds along with getting that one DSIware game, just to be safe. Now to wait apparently (seems to be the easiest way)

Yes, that's correct.

Use Plailect guide: https://3ds.guide/

It's the best guide to 3DS homebrew and probably the best console hacking guide ever made.

I'm reading through this now, and it looks very promising and I think I can do it. But just a couple noob questions before I get started.

1) It seems like I'll be able to do any online interactions (trading Pokemon for example) with no problem, correct?

2) I have a o3DS that I have not transferred yet. Will I be able to transfer that after I get my n3DS exploited? The o3DS is 11.2.0. Or should I be doing the transfer before I exploit?

1) I believe so yes.

2) From the FAQ of the guide:

Q: What about System Transfers?
A: Once you have completed the guide, you can system transfer to and from an arm9loaderhax’d 3DS or 2DS exactly like you would a regular stock console or EmuNAND (you will lose any non-legitimate games/themes/DLC in the transfer; saves will stay even for games that are lost).

So do the transfer after you're done.

Can someone tell me what the current best method is for homebrew? I do not own Cubic Ninja and have an o3DS running version 7 that I'm willing to use as a test subject. Research tells me that browserhax and menuhax has been patched, so I'm having difficulty knowing/finding which tutorial to follow.

I was looking at the Plailect guide as posted by a user above. Is that the best method? Keep in mind I'm interested in homebrew for applications such as PKHeX, if that narrows it down at all.

Also, is a 4 GB card enough, or will I require additional storage?

Thanks in advance.

Pialect's guide will give you cfw, and will require more than that 4gb card for sure.

Browserhax was patched in newer firmware, but not the version you're on.

Well, I attempted the DSiWarehax last night for my black New 3DS and....it worked! Or, at least it did until I completely screwed everything up.

I successfully downgraded and installed A9HL, but then I realized that I was supposed to backup the tickets for all of my dumped games before performing the system transfer. As such, the only games that would show up were ones that I had bought digitally on the eShop. So, being the pioneering geniusidiot that I am, I decided to try to manually move the Title folders in the Nintendo 3DS folder around. This was, predictably, a disaster and caused all of my homebrew applications to stop working and ALL of my games to disappear. I then moved the folders back, which fixed the eShop games, but my FBI and Homebrew Launcher would still not work.

No fear, I'll just inject FBI into Health and Safety, open FBI, delete the homebrew titles, and then reinstall. This would have worked great, except I apparently deleted the wrong FBI title, which deleted the Health and Safety app.

No problem! I'll just restore from my Nand dump. Except, oh wait, the Nand dump is corrupted!

So now, I'm not sure what to do. How can I install CIA's without access to FBI? I assume I could launch it from Homebrew Channel, but how do I even launch the Homebrew channel now? Any suggestions?

Don't you want to use the ARM hack to boot into LumaDS and then reinstall FBI? I believe you would follow the guide from this point (assuming you have a New 3DS).

Set Luma to boot into Decrypt9 (see here https://github.com/AuroraWright/Luma3DS/wiki/Other-features-and-notes payload chainload) and use it to re-inject FB

Yeah, that was the first thing I tried, but it can't inject FBI because there's nothing to inject it to. I somehow managed to completely delete the Health and Safety app from the system. When I try to inject FBI, it just gives me an error...

What version are you on ? Theoretically if you can find the properly signed version of H&S for your system and can get homebrew with system access eg via browserhax you could install it via FBI or one of the update/Downgrade tools.

Hmm. Alsl Do you have any other NANDBackups ?

At the bottom of the guide, it says that you can get on the IRC to get some help. I suggest doing that.

For support, ask for help at #3dshacks on Rizon IRC or 3DS Hacking on Discord.

I googled for your issue and came across this thread.

Hahaha, yup. I knew better too, but I was just being impatient.

I figure, worst case, I'll just wait a week, system transfer back, and then Factory Reset the Black N3DS. I think that would work, but I have DEFINITELY been wrong in the past.

well, at least you didn't end up requiring a hardmod to recover your account.

that's how bad i screwed up my N3DS 6 months ago.

Thanks for the help guys, but I actually found a really simple fix: Go into System Update, search for Updates, the System will update (even though I was on the latest firmware), and then BAM: Health and Safety was back.

I would have never thought of that, but some random post on a thread I found suggested it. It's always the simplest thing...

Hello everyone. I just completed the installation (New 3DS), but my EU copy of Rhythm Heaven isn't starting. I just get a black screen.

Do I have to do something before out-of-region games can be played?

EDIT: It doesn't work through Homebrew Launcher either...

EDIT2: My Japanese copy of Dragon Quest Monsters works. I guess this is a Rhythm Heaven-specific issue. Does anybody know a fix?

I'm up to this step on a New 3DS, but after injecting and rebooting, it's still the original H&S app. What am I doing wrong! D:

EDIT: Nevermind, figured it out. I had to select the FBI .app file and not the backed up hs.app, LOL.

Quick question: Does Nintendo ban/brick/penalize 3DS systems that have the homebrew channel on it?

They haven't yet*. And the EmuNAND method has been around for ages now. I'm not sure what they'd gain either. All it'd do is stop people spending money in the estore. Encouraging people to pirate stuff seems rather counterproductive

* They have banhammered people for cheating, hacking online competitive games, messing with their Freemium apps, and playing unreleased stuff early but not for just running CFW / Homebrew.

With the kind of telemetry they have, they could do so easily. The activity log tracks all of that stuff, so it's easy to see. You'll even run across a street pass once in a while with someone having recently played a homebrew app.

They haven't done anything yet. Banning people from legitimate avenues is just going to push them into piracy exclusively. So if folks aren't wrecking the online environment, there's no reason to ban anyone.

I have no problems playing my EU copy of RHM on my New 3DS xl. Does it work on a unmodded 3ds?

I can't really test that.

I have a US New 3DS. When I finished the homebrew installation, my imported Rhythm Heaven cart wouldn't start up.

I thought that I might have somehow messed up the installation, but when I tried running my imported Dragon Quest Monsters cart, it worked fine.

Cactus, are you using Luma? I'm going to assume because you should be. :)

Create a locales folder with the luma folder.
Create 000400000018A500.txt inside that folder.
Inside the file, put "EUR EN" (without the quotation marks)
When booting Luma, hold select and enable the region/language emulation (or similar) option.
Your game should now boot!

Quick question: Does Nintendo ban/brick/penalize 3DS systems that have the homebrew channel on it?

Nope. Bans have only ever come from manipulating online play and playing a game super early.

I've quoted you guys in the OP, hope you don't mind.
Feel free to point out if there's something else you think would be useful to answer directly on the op.
Thanks

Thanks for the answers!

I just tried out the smashhax thing on my 3DS. Is there any way to get the Homebrew Launcher as a permanent app on my home screen like it is on my Wii, or do I have to do the exploit every time I want to use it?

I'm basically doing this because I'm determined to play Metroid Fusion on my 3DS, and Nintendo refuses to put it on the eShop. If I had to use the Smash exploit everytime I want to play one game, it's kinda burdensome.

Yes, Luma. I'll try this after work. Thank you!

Quick question, though. Why "EUR EN"?

Ah, ok, that makes sense.

Is there any reason why Dragon Quest started up without me having to create a txt file?

Some do, some don't. (And this might not be the solution by the way)

I've only had to use a .txt file to get Japanese Animal Crossing working.

Anyone able to answer my question above? Unlinked Sysnand and emunand using Menuhax/Luma...I basically wanted to download Badge Arcade but need an NNID. Is it OK to create and have a new NNID on my Emunand without any zaniness?

Thanks :)

So like most other people recently here, I just got my Black Friday N3DS and had some questions. I mostly want to play games region free which is why I'm looking into homebrew, not really CFW. What are the big things that CFW can do that homebrew can't?

Also since I don't have homebrew to begin with on either of my 3DSs, what's the go to method that people with 11.1.0 firmware have been using? I looked at https://smealum.github.io/3ds/ to see what were my options. Smash Bros. isn't recommended, basehax I don't have homebrew. I don't have OoT, but I could go out and get it (not sure if Nintendo Selects version is fine). I don't know if OoTHax is a permanent method or if I have to go into OoT to launch Homebrew each time.

https://3ds.guide looks helpful, but the instructions seem like it's only for CFW.

You need CFW anyway otherwise in the (near) future when the new update hits you'll either have to stop going online/using the eShop or giving up homebrew and thus region-free.

Steelhax + A DSiware Transfer from a system with CFW already. You can get low access homebrew using the methods you listed but they are all temporary.

Hey guys, is it possible to play region free games with a sky3ds? Like unreleased games in ntsc?

No. At least not by itself. Sky3ds pretends to be a legitimate 3DS cart so everything has to pass normal tests. You should be able to use Hans or region free CFW to play a wrong region cart from Sky3ds but that seems unnecessarily awkward.

got that new 3ds from the black friday sale. i'd love to hack it but i don't really want to deal with hacking an old 2ds and doing the transfer if i don't have to.... any word on any new methods for the 11.0.0.33 firmware?

SlowHax has been coming s SOON(TM) for like a month now. If you've got a hackable 2DS I'd bite the Bullet and do it that way.

Is this a hack that will need an exploitable game (like Zelda 4 swords dsi ware which I have on my n3DS XL) to install?

If so, is it possible to system transfer from my 11.2 n3DS XL to my 11.0 new n3DS regular without updating my new one?

If not, I'm not sure how I'm suppose to get an exploitable game onto the system when I don't have eShop access. Unless there are still physical games with exploits I could get (that aren't overly expensive).
