Media Create Sales: Week 47, 2016 (Nov 21 - Nov 27)

That's just retail sell-through via trackers though. 1.1 million is total shipments + digital worldwide. We're probably looking at something closer to 800k shipped+digital Japan+Asia, and 300k shipped+digital West.

Edit: Wait I'm an idiot. The tracked sales are 400k in Japan so far.

Hum? All the versions of DQB are definitely exceeding 700k in Japan, this was from May, and I believe that's just Japan?

Its over that figure with digital even if they shipped zero more physical units since then, so the west+Asia is looking at ~300k or there abouts. How much has actually been sold to end consumers remains unknown and we're not helped by the fact that NPD leakers never gave us info on DQB.

Can't really judge if that's good or not without knowing more, I don't think. Only DQ numbers we've had leaked were the disastrous sell throughs in NPD for DQVII and DQH. If the 700k from May does not include Asia, and the remaining 400k is Japan leftovers + Asia + West, then that's... not great.

It's been two whole days since FFXV was released. Where's the "fuck yeah we stuffed the channel hard enough and shipped a million copies" press release?

If you see a press release it will be for worldwide shipments.

Japanese sellthrough is tomorrow and you won't see stuffed channels.

Before I make a thread is that number total sold to retailers copies + digital sales? Or only sold physical copies + digital sales?

It says hanbai, which means sales. Not sure how shipment/sold are usually reported in Japanese press releases though.

need someone that's familiar with how square enix worded their press release for the numbers, because sometimes company do say sold while actually it's shipped I believe. but i'm guessing shipped+digital

Its shipped + digital I believe, based on the footnotes at the bottom (Google translate: * 1: package first shipments and download sales total number of)

So FFXV actually did well in the end?

The game must have been selling very well in the west.

We don't know until they give us actual sold-through numbers instead of mixing shipped with digital sales

But yeah, the safe expectation here is that it probably performs in the west way better than it does in Japan

at least, we'll know UK numbers on Monday (retail only).

Should have read your post before posting Kresnik

Heh, I enjoy discussing this kinda stuff.

I actually have a quarter-by-quarter breakdown of Vita:

Q4 2011 - 439,986
Total - 439,986

Q1 2012 - 202,504
Q2 2012 - 173,791
Q3 2012 - 177,881
Q4 2012 - 136,663
Total - 690,839

Q1 2013 - 336,059
Q2 2013 - 204,207
Q3 2013 - 169,832
Q4 2013 - 514,434
Total - 1,224,532

Q1 2014 - 399,908
Q2 2014 - 246,589
Q3 2014 - 268,270
Q4 2014 - 253,803
Total - 1,168,570

Q1 2015 - 298,025
Q2 2015 - 202,730
Q3 2015 - 197,613
Q4 2015 - 371,103
Total - 1,069,471

Q1 2016 - 296,402
Q2 2016 - 175,912
Q3 2016 - 137,073
Q4 2016 - ???
Total - 609,387

It was actually holding fairly close to 2015 during Q1 and Q2, but then it started to nosedive with Q3. Q4 2015 was a big improvement on the year before and I put that pretty much solely down to Minecraft advertising, but even if it matched last year's performance it'd still be below 1m.

2014 was the most consistent year though, although 2013's Q4 (with slim; PSTV; God Eater; FFX etc.) was good.

What is the highest day one digital sales in Japan on record? It looks like there will be a lot of digital sales for FF XV.

I'm a bit surprised to see that it had a bigger initial shipment + digital in the West than Final Fantasy XIII because Japan + Asia at best must be around or slightly over 1 million units.

Final Fantasy XIII initially shipped 3,56 million units in Europe and North America.

As of March 31, 2010

Japan - 1,85 million
North America - 1,79 million
Europe - 1,77 million

Asia, Other - 0,14 million

It is worth noting that it was very overshipped in Europe since according to GfK Entertainment, sell through by the end of 2010 was at 1,12 million.

Hmm, FFXV broke the record for most first day digital sales in Japan. I imagine that number isn't particularly big but yeah.

According to Famitsu digital estimates Monster Hunter X sold 111k copies digital in November and the game was released the 28th.
I don't think previous mega million seller weres above that (lower digital ratio before, or titles with really low digital ratio to begin with)

So it should have been somewhere between 80-100k first day and FFXV is most likely slightly above that.

Consistent as in "it sold similarly between all the quarters", unlike other years where it was very up or down.

Going up or down between quarters is the normal. 2013 and 2015 are better metrics for good pattern, staying flat at last quarter is never good.

Sure, but I didn't say it was good :p

To be fair, I'd say 2012/2014 are more the norm for Vita, in that it doesn't have a lot of software to push it during the holidays so it sells 'alright' for most of the year and then maintains during the holidays vs. Nintendo hardware which tends to see big bumps. They bucked that trend by releasing everything during Q4 2013 and it was only during 2015 when they realised they had a game on the platform with selling-to-parents appeal (Minecraft).

Mmmmh.

Doesn't the famitsu article say that it's the highest digital sales for a Square Enix game in Japan?

As in all time highest just for SE not all games.

That info is in the press release from S-E. Unless Sony and Nintendo provided them highest opening sales at digital they can talk only for their own games.

Biggest digital launch

[3DS] Animal Crossing: New Leaf - 200k-ish
[3DS] Monster Hunter Generations - 111.544 (2 days)

Biggest console digital launch

[PS4] Dark Souls III - 50.473 (4 days)

Biggest Square Enix digital launch

[PSV] Romancing SaGa 2 - 35.995 (4 days)
[PS4] Dragon Quest Heroes 2 - 30.877 (3 days)

Around 30k seem to be what most big Square Enix games do digitally at launch, Dragon Quest Heroes on PS4, Builders on PS4 & PSV, Overwatch and Dragon Quest VIII are all around that mark as well.

Well I think they were talking about first day digital sales.
New Leaf had a huge digital ratio because of shortages but I don't think it happened the very first day of release?

Speaking about Romancing SaGa 2 it seems to do pretty well for what it was, I think we saw it one or two more times in the Famitsu Digital+retail top 30 and the game never left the top of the digital chart for PSV (it was second this week with half price again)

And regarding sales, I think it's pretty much expected that PS4 games have a digital ratio around 10-15%, looking at à 650-800k FW retail that would give a 65-120k digital first month for FFXV so still in line with what was said above.

Final Fantasy XV will also have one of the longest periods of tracking for digital sales, at least 27 days.

We won't be getting estimates until late January, so no point on discussing much of this right now.

Software sales from Dengeki.

Percentage change
3DS -24%
PS4 +56%
PSV +0%
WIU -35%
PS3 -61%
XB1 -48%

Sales are down by almost 5m.

Somewhat surprising how consistent Vita did throughout the year, last December there were some 800k Vita games sold, with Minecraft being 150k, this holiday there's just SaGa so it'll likely end up being down.

I thought we established that the digital sales comment in Japan was SE only...so what's stopping the Asia sales from being the same thing?

Well I guess it could be. But I prefer to read it as a optimist and that it means out of all games =P. Maybe we get some specific Asia related shipment numbers some day if they are worth of bragging about.
