Media Create Sales: Week 47, 2016 (Nov 21 - Nov 27)

Will also be interesting to see the price for the Switch. Nintendo "panicked" with the price regarding the 3DS early on, dropping it from 25k yen to 15k yen. I dont think such a solution will be done again.

Honestly, I think dropping the price from 25,000 yen to 15,000 helped the system more than if it had been 15,000 yen from the start. That's something you can only really get away with once, though, indeed. I think there will be two SKUs and one of them will cost 25,000 yen.

Why did Resident Evil do so much better even in Japan compared to Onimusha?
Did it though? Onimusha was the first million seller in Japan for PS2, with 2nd selling even better - and from what I recall none of the RE titles came close to that on PS2 (or other contemporary platforms - obviously).

Actually I don't recall HD era REs doing much better in Japan either - but Onimusha was ran into ground before that, so it's not much to compare on.

Iwata outright said it was because third parties were publicly pulling support for the 3DS(funny how that didn't happen to other systems). With Switch the worry will be first party content because third parties are probably going to be really soft support at best anyway.

There's no real comparison to be made if you want a "fair" one in that generation. But it was just a part of the larger general point - stuff like RE that's made with English voices to begin with, taking place in a fictional American city, inspired by Hollywood zombie movies, could hit a peak of over 2 million when times were good. I just don't think being "western" or "eastern" or "Japanese" in terms of setting is the major hangup people think it is.

Not publicly, actually. MML3 was by far the biggest announced third-party title cancelled in between the 3DS launch and the price cut, and Capcom didn't really need hardware sales to justify that one with Inafune out (though it was likely a factor).

Privately, it was likely another story.

But honestly, if Sony/PS4 can't sell all these big and hyped consoles games, then no one can.

It's time for Sony to make their own Switch: console version for the west and handheld for Japan.

I won't even drag Sony for copying Nintendo again, it's the only solution at this point.

Is this a joke post? Sony to drastically change their strategy when PS4 has become an outstanding success for them globally to a strategy that will most likely do considerably worse globally.

For comparison, FFXIIILR debuted on comgnet with: 555. Media-create debut: 277,082. Going by that ratio of 785 for FFXV: 392,000 debut !
FFXV bomba.

Sony didn't change their Japanese strategy after the PS4 launched, they did it in the middle of last gen. That's why the PS4's launch was delayed in Japan. No longer a priority.

True but it was obvious that the mood surrounding the device was definitely turning negative. Also I'm not sure the price drop actually stopped third parties bailing out... I seem to recall a third party sizzle reel at E3 2012 that was really pathetic(Tekken was the only big announcement).

Pokemon seems it will keep dropping this week. I don't think it will catch XY sales in Japan. The market is even in a worse shape that I was expecting.

To be honest, that booth will not have anything new that wasn't at the Level-5 Vision 2016. My take is the project is at too early stage for anything else (especially the game which doesn't even have a platform). I know they said it'd launch in 2017, but based on how previous L5 projects were delayed, I don't see that one releasing before 2018 at the earliest (would love to be wrong, really curious about Megaton Musashi).

In other Level-5 news, 4th Yo-kai Watch movie announced for Winter 2017 (it'll be December 16th ;)). 3rd one is out on the 17th.

3DS still hasn't caught PS4 this year going by Famitsu. Gonna be a tight finish!

Famitsu and MC are both missing 100k units for the 3DS this year because of the special 2DS bundle from the Pokemon special release earlier in the year as that bundle was not tracked.

So its the other way around.

Not that this has much relevance to your greater point, but what do we think the growth/change is to digital from XY to SM?

That said, I think we'll know this better towards the end of the holidays when XY started to collapse, and there's some decent odds that SM's good reception carries it further.

look like FFXV is going to debut around 700k..

probably asked many times, but what can we expect from the asian market regarding FFXV

iirc Yakuza shipped over 200k copies - so maybe 500k for FFXV?

Should be much, much, much more than Yakuza. I actually would not be surprised if the Asia numbers rival the Japanese numbers in total because this isn't just releasing in Chinese/Korean/whatever along with a Japanese version. Full English as well since the Western versions are day and date.

Random anecdote: At the Distant Worlds concert this weekend here in Singapore, it was a full house with ~5000 people, and when they asked how many people had already bought FFXV, it seemed like maybe 1/3 or 1/4 of the audience put up their hands, lol.

Is that a good/bad anecdote?

Kingdom Hearts is kinda hard to predict. I definately think it will be a sizeable drop in Japan from 1/2 but at the same time AFAIK Disney flicks post Frozen are more popular than ever over there. If they can capture that in the marketing it can be a huge boon. Even the first collection did surprisingly well without having the most popular new IPs.

But at the same time there is huge baggage on all the other garbage that audience doesn't care about. Just don't put a fuckin Nomura character playing chess at the forefront of ads.

That said I'm surprised the series hasn't completely tanked in the west yet considering how they have handled it.

It's mostly just Frozen. And most of the people who made Frozen huge, are probably not interested in Kingdom Hearts and likely don't own or want a PS4. So I don't see that really working as a strategy.

Isn't Zootopia really popular too? That said it might be too recent to even appear in the game, who knows.

You do have a point that PS4 as a platform might not be the hottest shit for that group. Anyway, I still think that Disney portion is the only real part of the package that could have any potential pull for new customers. Not that I think they are able to market it well for that audience anyway, regardless of how small it is.

Worldwide especially I feel that the brand of Disney is in a much better spot than Square compared to KH1/2 days.

Wonder how many of those are for mobile... I'd say the majority will be.

Mega Man has an announced revival for mobile, though I feel I should mention that Devil May Cry and Lost Planet were brands Capcom kept listing as notable brands well after they stopped releasing games in them.

Is that based on early reports or something? Just wondering.

For some reason, I expect Sun/Moon sales to reach at best 3.5 million, possibly under 3 million.
So going by Famitsu, you think it's possible it sells worse than ORAS and sells less than 700K in the entire holidays and beyond despite having a 400K second week?.... That would be nothing short of disastrous for Pokemon in Japan. I don't think we're quite there yet....

I wish them good luck with those dormant IPs,

that Bionic Commando revival blew up in their face.

Also I hope they consider Ghosts & Goblins "dormant" cause I want one ASAP

If it's not tracked then it doesn't really matter. End year reports are based on tracked sales, there won't be notes about those extra 2DS sold.

There isn't a single reason it wouldn't drop further at its third week and at this period of the year. We are still far from big holiday weeks.

What do you say, that you expect a 1m shipment for Asia outside Japan? That's a number that would compete USA or EU. Dragon Quest PS4/PSV spin-offs had less sales than Yakuza in Asia despite much bigger sales in Japan.

We were referring to LTDs and 1 million shipment for US and EU has already been surpassed day 1.
