50 million PS4s sold-through as of 6th December 2016

There could be one.
Last year, the regular bundle was announced mid December.
What people generally remember is the LE Blops3 bundle, which was higher priced with a 1Tb drive.

Have to admit I thought it was a mistake to go in BF in NA with only 1 bundle with a 6 month old game, but it allowed them to both optimize costs and have huge amounts of stock on 1 SKU...

Well done.

Oh yeah I was one of the people reminding everyone about that fact but I'm not so sure now. I would think if it wasn't announced at PSX and not announced with the new sale promotion then it might not be happening. Maybe it will be a pro bundle at $399.

Is currently staging a hunger strike outside Gearbox HQ while trying to hate them to death
if you seriously think there is a lot of people on gaf that genuinely think knack is a masterpiece you need your sarcasm sensors checked lol

bioshock infinite is a decent game nothing more as far as i am concerned

I was just poking fun at it's loyal (and insane) fan base. Bioshock is a game that is generally well liked, but has a small and very vocal base of haters that are convinced that GAF reviles it as much as they do.

It is a great console, but most importantly for me is that it doesn't seem to break. Every other Sony console I have owned has been replaced by this point, for PS3 multiple times. This seems like it will live forever, which I am really grateful for. PS2 was shite as well, disc read errors every year. If other people have the same then this 50 million is probably actually that, not 30 million with people buying replacements.
I imagine many PS4s will have their HDDs malfunction before any other internal component.

But... lack of UHD player?

Means nothing.

4k Blu-rays are roughly twice the price of regular blu-rays usually and if you stream content like I do from legal sources then the necessity for 4k blu ray players is actually quite minimal

If they succeed, which I don't believe they will anyway, it'll be a good few years before the library picks up. Hell, we dont even have some DVD's transferred to Blu-ray yet.

i actually did see that post before i wrote my comment lol

Two things I have learned here on GAF.
Don't believe the hype and don't believe the hate.

Uhhhhh... it was just last gen that disproves what you're saying.

PS2 was far in the lead, but MS dropped the 360 a year before PS3 and started the new gen. So, no.

Not the same situation.
By 2005 ps2 had shipped 100 million units. So when microsoft launched the 360 sony was ready to start thinking about next gen, also that was the gen were the graphics had a huge leap so the xbox 360 did look noticably better than the ps2.

Add to that xbox 360 ushered in the era of online games. It had new hits like gears and halo was a strong franchise that moved units.

Xbox doesnt have these advantages now.

Extremely impressive. Surpassed 50 million while heading into a killer 2017, with TLOU2 officially announced at the best PSX yet. Beautifully played, Sony.

I'm on the first page of that infamous thread and I thought Sony would be 4th behind the rest and new kid Valve machine 😂

Sony did something that I honestly thought they were incapable of doing, they learnt from the PS3 era. I was quick to dump the PS3 despite loving it's many many games after I bought the PS4. It may not quite be a thing of beauty like PS1/2 but I've never enjoyed a console this much since PS2. Just look at the psx event, they dropped GAROU, let it Die and the black Friday sales I bought Shantae and Aqua Moto. This console is delivering really well and TLG coming this Friday, I feel like a kid again lol.

Browsing Amazon categories, I find 103789 available Blu-ray products. Filtering for "4k Ultra-HD" gets me down to 106.
Obviously, supporting this format is the most important thing a games console needs right now.
You would have gotten that impression reading the reactions when it was revealed the Pro didn't have one and the XB1S did.

I am pretty sure Aceofspades was not actually asking a question.

By the time UHD media becomes more common and mainstream by then PS5 with UHD player will be out.

Right now UHD media is in it's infancy stage.

Not to mention, that some, like me, might not even have a 4K TV before that. I also don't buy or rent movies like I used to, due to services like Netflix, so at the moment UHD player is irrelevant to me.

Great stuff all around. I'm surprised they are just now mentioning how well Black Friday went for them.

People keep underestimating the worldwide impact of PS4.

This. Sony still has bombs in development coming throughout the next few years like Horizon Zero Dawn, Days Gone, Spider-Man, Detroit: Become Human, God of War, Death Stranding and The Last of Us 2. CRAZY.

I see Horizon, Spider-Man and God of War doing very well, but the others I'm not too sure. The Last of Us 2 will do old school Halo 3 numbers though and I'm sure Uncharted 4 will eventually hit those numbers as well.

I'm actually surprised it just hit 50 million, aren't their expectations 60 million by the end of their fiscal year?

Best wishes.

Sony has finally found their groove. Not only do they have the major blockbusters like Uncharted & the Last of Us, they're going back to the more family friendly stuff with Ratchet & Clank, which was the fastest selling game in the franchise. They're keeping goodwill with fans by bringing out Crash & Wipeout. I feel like Horizon will knock it out of the park, too.

60 million is shipped. Definitely doable in the next 4 months with December likely to be another massibe one.

Don't forget Final Fantasy VII Remake. That is going to be massive for PS4.

Honestly, congrats to Sony on the lead, they came out of the gate swinging whilst Microsoft didn't.

Worldwide vs US and Canada but Xbox One was pretty much sold out at launch so I'll say they came out swinging pretty hard

Sony sells over 1 million PlayStation 4 consoles in just 24 hours

Sony’s next-gen PlayStation 4 console is off to a good start. The company announced today that it has sold over 1 million consoles in just 24 hours. Sony’s PlayStation 4 only launched on Friday in the US and Canada, so it's an impressive start for just two regions. "We are thrilled that consumer reaction has been so phenomenal," says Andrew House, president and group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment. "Sales remain very strong in North America, and we expect continued enthusiasm as we launch the PlayStation 4 in Europe and Latin America on November 29th."

The PlayStation 4 is now Sony’s fastest-selling console, with North American sales surpassing the initial demand for the PlayStation 2 in Japan. European sales of the PS4 start in just under two weeks, so it’s entirely possible that Sony’s next-gen console could overtake Nintendo’s struggling Wii U sales (currently 3.91 million) by the end of the year. Microsoft's Xbox One console also launches on November 22nd to provide even more competition for the holiday shopping season.

Sony's financial year end is March 31

Not surprised, some USGafs seemed to genuinely believe Sony was doomed because XB1 has been leading in US NPD for several quiet months

50 million is Sold through, the 60 million target is shipped, they've probably already shipped 52/53 million with Dec/Q1 shipments it'l be close to 60million, but it might fall just short.

60 million shipped is definitely doable, you're right.

As yes, VII-R will do well but its split up into parts so I don't know how that will resonate with the people. Also I thought XV would be bigger than it was, so I don't know how much stock there is in the financial success of Final Fantasy right now.

Best wishes.

Hilarious to think some people believe Sony gets to dictate when a new generation of consoles gets released. As if another company has to ask Sony for permission. You guys are great.

FFVII is proven game people been literally begging for. It will easily perform better than FFXV if of the quality is there. If each part is the size of full game(guessing 25-30 hours)like they said I don't think the episodic approach will matter.

It's a combination of things. The drop off from 5-6. The racing genre not being as popular. It not being a mainline GT game and having the Sport tag.

It will sell millions, more than any other current racing franchise.

You have no idea how big GT fanbase is.

Plus the game is shaping up nicely.
