Pokémon Sun & Moon |OT| Ultra Beasts and where to find them

I'm kind of running 2 teams of Pokemon myself, since I can't pick. A bunch of my older favorites aren't in this game (or that my shiny Lilligant is waiting for me in ORAS), so I decided to try using [mostly] different Pokemon this time around. Currently I'm switching between Mimikyu, Ribombee, Lycanroc, Primarina, Magnezone, Vikavolt, Alolan Muk, Alolan Exeggcutor, Espeon, Crobat, Alolan Ninetails and Alolan Sandslash. To be fair, I end up with Magnezone and Crobat in every game, since they are so reliable, but I'm not using them in my main party much. Earlier in the game I also had Growlithe, Wishiwashi and Surskit as well. Still need to breed those 3 with proper stats/moves.
That first party sounds somewhat similar to the fairy-heavy route I found myself going, with both primarina and ribombee on board :3
I love lilligant and my petilil single-handedly stomped the water trial but I ended up putting her in the bank to give the new grass peeps a chance :p

Just out of curiosity, what is your guys least favorite Pokemon this generation?

Personally I really don't like Shiinotic.
250px-756Shiinotic.png

I mostly dislike it because there's nothing interesting about it. Just another mushroom, that doesn't seem to have much flavor/attitude and is a complete eyesore. Strength Sap is cool tho.

I prefer morelull visually. i think it's the weird nappy/diaper thing shinotic has that really puts me it off it.

As for my own 'worst'? Toxapex was a mistake.
Mareanie should've been a single stage with tox's stats and abilities. Ugly Tox just ruins the visual delight that is mareanie. It's my personal new delphox.

Gamefreak once again making an awesome pokemon I like and ruining it by making it a pre-evo with the meh stats that entails and an evo that ruins it's visual awesomeness.

Mareanie and Toxapex are both rad af and I will countenance no opinions to the contrary. I am so happy Toxapex appears competitively viable.

Shiinotic is really ugly, but it has a great move pool so I can't totally hate.

I really dislike Trumbeak too. What a terribly bland design. At least make it a bit more colorful.

Overall I like the vast majority of the new designs. Not a fan of Alolan Dugtrio or Golem though

Spent two hours chaining for a Rough Skin Gabite, and then the moment I get on Wonder Trade I get a Gible with Rough Skin. Well, at least mine's in a Beast Ball.

Each to their own. I'm happy for those who like tox that it's viable but much like the homeless bag-lady fox or orange barney the dinosaur I'd rather it had been it's own single stage mon rather than the visual pustule atop an evo-chain I actually liked :p

No. It needed to lose the weeb bait.

Why are you singling out Trumbeak? Toucannon is the final.

Speaking of, it feels weird almost never seeing one. Most places that would be high enough level for it instead have highly overleveled Trumbeak.

I feel like is his pre-evo could have been really cool. It feels like such a waste conceptually for a fairy mushroom Pokémon. I mean, how do you not base it off of fairy circles somehow?

Like, Toxapex has such great abilities, typing, stats, and move pool that it's hard to deny any of it. But Mareanie looks 1000 times better, and sometimes that's just enough.

Shiinotic and Guzzlord are my picks.

Shiinotic is plain at the same time as being ugly. It's just a generic RPG mushroom monster. This is a series whose first mushroom Pokemon was a zombie cicada, the next was neat looking kangaroo thing, then a Pokeball mimic that fooled nobody as a joke (but was crazy good at battling), and now it's... generic RPG mushroom monster. And it's not even a good design, despite being a generic monster trope.

Guzzlord is a UB. Which are supposed to have odd, offbeat designs. But to be honest, other than Guzzlord, I really wouldn't have a hard time picturing any of the other UBs just being random legendaries. Or for Pheromosa and Buzzwole, tbh they could have just been regular old Pokemon (maybe a split evo from some trainee bug). And the rest don't look out of place as legendaries.

But Guzzlord... is just odd. It's design is super busy, to a fault. It's a confusing design that doesn't really know what it wants to be, while trying to be like five different designs at once.

For example

Buzzwole: It's a mosquito. That's a bodybuilder. A mashup of conflicting things. A tiny little insect and a bodybuilder. And it works so well. One of my favorite new Pokemon.
Pheromosa: Same deal. The mix of a runway model and a cockroach. Cockroachs are icky and ugly. Runway models are not. And put together, the design works.
Nihilego: Creepy jellyfish with a haunted ghost girl mixed in a bit making an unsettling design, but a design that's focused.
Xurkitree: It's a string of Christmas lights mixed with a tree. It's a blend of nature and technology. It works.
Kartana: An origami Pokemon. I'm surprised it took this long to get one. Other than maybe Porygon I guess? But this is a pure origami Pokemon. And this 100% could have just been a regular legendary in any other generation. There's nothing strange or bizarre here.
Celesteela: Based on a neat Japanese legend. And pretty much that's 100% of what it is. No real debate there.
Guzzlord: It's... umm??? It's a giant maw? Dragon? Alien from Alien? It has two heads? Maybe? What is the tiny second head on the top do? Is it supposed to be a living black hole or something? It looks enough like a regular Pokemon, at the same time not really? So it doesn't have the strange unsettling appearance of Nihilego or Celesteela, but it also doesn't have the normal Pokemon look of Buzzwole or Pheromosa? So what does it want to be? Gamefreak didn't even seem to know, since its stats are also unfocused and strange.

out of frustration I was just about to double check where to find politoed, and while I'm double tasking I open my system and hear the sound of rain

SWEET GLORIOUS MALIE RAIN

EDIT: WHAT THE FUCK DO YOU MEAN ITS ONLY AT NIGHT, I HAVE TO STAY HERE FOR ANOTHER HOUR!?
Screw this kid and his Araquanid. I had to wait for him to struggle himself to death.

dat aqua ring tho

Oh yeah, the Mareanie line. I don't really like them much for driving Corsola to becoming endangered.

This gen really makes you feel bad for a lot of Pokemon with how detailed they are about Predator and Prey. Mandibuzz preying on vulnerable Cubone is just terrible.

there are lists of max stats for each pokemon on serebii and bulbapedia

No clue, but bulbapedia has egg move lists.

I compare the pokemon's max stats with lists of natures (on bulba again) and pick the ones that align. Smogon has true competitive battle setups which you can use too.

Do people generally try to get natures that balance out unbalanced stats, or do they try to stack on top of the already high stats?

No. It needed to lose the weeb bait.
Nah. If I were to be trollishly reductive like that I'd argue we need to lose the edgelord fodder :p

Yup yup! I think it's pretty telling that they slapped mareanie on the side of the TGC game box rather than tox :3

Interestingly it seems to be the toxapex doing that rather than the Mareanie mostly. Mareanie mostly just eat the coral that grows atop corsola but they can regrow that. I'm sure it's still a fairly unpleasant experience for the Corsola regardless though, but it's preferable to being killed :p

Depends on the stats, for something like blissey, where the defense is extreemly low, and hp extreemly high, bulking the defense is the way to go.

For something fast with a high attack or satk stat, you generally want to boost the attackstat that the pokemon has the most of, or speed depending on your team if they can support the pokemon with speed reducing against the opponents/tailwind and stuff like that.

You dont want to boost the low attackstat in general, and fast pokemon dont like negative speed natures.
How you train a pokemon defensively is depending on the meta calls, and youll have to calculate for that if you want to go that deep(most people use 252 252 spreads, especially in the beginning of a generation).

TheSeks

Blinded by the luminous glory that is David Bowie's physical manifestation.
If your Petilil already has Giga Drain you should probably just evolve it, then it might be able to tank a hit so it can get a sleep powder off. I think the Sun Stone is outside the Geothermal Plant if you missed it.

Also, whatever fire move your Growlithe has is probably better than Bite vs. Mimikyu because of STAB.

4 Revives and 4 Super Potions later, that was a good idea to evolve.

The Liligant sleeped it, Leech Seeded and then got KO'd after landing the sleep/seed. While it was asleep, Bouncee/the NPC-traded Tsareena tanked Haunters hits. Got KO'd. Genger got KO'd in the attempt to prevent some hits after Mimikyu got KO'd from Leech Seed sapping it's health. Growlith and Snorlax took out Haunter. Trial done.

Geez, that "Play Rough" hits like a truck, though.

Dammit if the critical catch whistle isn't one of the greatest sound effects in video games.

One cannot underestimate just how amazing and iconic the sound design in Pokemon is.
The noises around Pokeballs basically makes the game, the little ritual of waiting for the three bumps, then lock of the Pokeball. Great stuff.

Crabrawler looks really dumb. No idea why people like it. Crabominable looks so stupid that it loops back around to being kind of funny, so I'm okay with that one. I know I'm weird.

Mudbray is an abomination...but Mudsdale is awesome. It's the face that ruins it.

Bounsweet is just terribly boring. Thankfully its evos are better.

Comfey is Klefki 2.0 goddamnit.

Togedemaru is yet another boring pikaclone.

Bruxish is hideous. The Basculin of this generation. At least it's not common, so I don't need to see its ugly face all the time.

No. It needed to lose the weeb bait.

Do you really think Mareanie is weeb bait? Really? It's just a head. Come on.

Nah. If I were to be trollishly reductive like that I'd argue we need to lose the edgelord fodder :p

What if I like the edgelord fodder AND the weeb bait?

Gotta love when it fails when trying to catch legends with 1hp...while asleep. That aside grats on the shiny.

Edit: I like bruxish if only for the fact that it's shiny colors are nearly identical to a piranha plant lol.

Great day today. Caught Rough Skin Gabite in a Beast Ball and also managed to catch a Galvanize Geodude that I'm planning to breed in Heavy Balls.

Guess I got some two good mons to give away later!

Fair enough. Congrats on having a mon you like be one of the most viable ones this gen :3

'Edgelord fodder' was just me imitating how silly regiruler's 'weeb bait' comment was :p
I would like it if there were more viable cute mons that weren't legendaries though.

I don't know about competitive, but in-game Komala and Rimbombee are pretty good and I think they're pretty cute.

I also think Minior is kind of cute but that might just be me.

Nice. I got one of the former via a wonder trade (I'm honestly ignoring anything older than Gen VII in terms of breeding...except Trubbish ).

I really hope they don't replicate the Rotom-dex in future games because honestly having him talk all the damn time is really grating on me, even after 30 hours.

Well... we agree on Ribombee at least :3

I doubt you're the only person who thinks minior is cute, but it's not my kind of thing.

Most of the time Rotom is commenting on something I'm just sitting there thinking "get on with it so i can see the map please" XD

I'm honestly kind of lukewarm on a lot of them this time around, and I'm usually the guy who loves every Pokemon. I just wish there were more, I guess. And Crabominable and Salazzle really disappointed me lol

I found it to be quicker to map Charizard ride on the Up-pad and use that as the map so I don't have to deal with Rotom nonsense.

That and the area on the lower screen that triggers him to say your latest goal again is surprisingly big. I'm just trying to look at the map, I don't want to hear what you have to say again, damn it.
