But why do people have to be so serious about this stuff? We fight over video games and we know it's dumb. Is is like that?

probably a lot of them aren't serious about it the same way we are sometimes serious about video games and sometimes we are not serious about video games

something something remix culture, something something prosumer, something something claiming ownership over cultural commonality, sharing economy, etc, etc

Not sure why people would think that though. All the recent posts are people (like me) saying their game of the year stuff is terrible.

Heh, I haven't been there in a while. I thought people were more posi there. I'll need to chime in as well. I don't like their GOTY things either.

What does 'ship' mean? I never heard this expression until like 2 weeks ago and now I can't get away from it.

Oh, like relation'ship'?

Oh wait, that's what it means? I always thought "shipping" means turning a character into a ship. Like some people like to turn their favorite characters into animals. I thought like that. But with a ship.

I would actually like to see that

It ended super abruptly with an obvious sequel hook so maybe

if you thought a Doom game where
you fought a Cyberdemon two thirds of the way through and fought the Spider Mastermind last
ended abruptly, I don't know what to tell you

the ending was what it was, but it's not like it was RAGE

I mean if you want to see anthropomorphic ships fucking each other that is definitely something you can find on the internet.

I mean game devs catch death threats on a consistent basis, there's always the extreme folk around.

Most shippers are normal people, hell most people who've gotten deep into a piece of media have shipped two characters.

I also don't think people actually take shipping that seriously.

You get the ones who do, but you get that for everything. Doesn't mean that it's how everyone is.

I mean, if you're at the point where you're making your own stories up for fictional characters you may already be dabbling in "taking things too seriously"

Plenty of fanfiction authors are serious writers, making well written sometimes novel length works. Having an existing framework to use is helpful for a lot of people.

What we do here with GOTY predictions is not that far off from shipping. I mean, I don't draw pictures of Hitman fucking DOOM
not on this website anyway
, but we've constructed a communal metagame based around picking favorites and then overanalyzing the core content to see if our favorite will become canon.

that's more speculation than fanfiction

you could make more of an argument for the "brad hates jeff/etc" shit

but that shit is stupid, too

The only thing about "shipping" that I actually don't get is why it's so popular with Overwatch. There is no story, none of the characters are actually characters and what dialog there is is terrible. Is this just "I want to see these two "hot" fictional characters fuck each other"? I at least conceptually get saying "Oh how cool would it be if Nathan Drake and Lara Croft got together" or something like but with Overwatch it's basically "Oh man, what if the Medic class character from Battlefield 1 got together with Soldier #4 from Call of Duty!"

Not that I care, it doesn't hurt anybody so if it entertains you go for it. It's probably still better than anime.

I mean there is lore and back-story outside of the game itself to pull from. Same thing with TF2 and Destiny, the stuff is there.

I think the fact that we still don't know much about the characters or the world is why people keep coming up with random stories for the characters.

my problem with the Waypoint goty stuff is that it feels a little... self indulgent. in a writerly sort of way, ya know.

and that's fine, and maybe not for me or maybe I just don't get it yet and in a few months i'll love it or hate it or something, but then in the middle of all of it there's an actual article on Frog Fractions 2 and I just don't know how to parse any of it.

Shipping is especially popular for characters that are barely defined since you can define them yourself to a big degree at that point.
It's why stuff like Touhou and KanColle got so big.
The characters in that have like a couple of lines of dialogue per game (in Touhous case) which lead to fans just making stuff up and extrapolating things from said lines of dialogue. It's really interesting imo.
A lot of this is also true for Vocaloid stuff.

Overwatch's characters were absolutely designed with shipping, cosplay, and fan art in mind (I mean, Blizzard put out official cosplay guides). All the characters are thinly sketched charicatures with ambiguous sexualities which makes them easy to drop into whatever scenario or relationship a fan wants them to be in. You could stick all the characters in a high school and as long as one of them says "Cheers, love!" and acts spunky everyone will recognize them as Tracer.

They're also easy characters to use if you're not a very good writer because their personalities are all one-note and easy to capture. Same goes for Fire Emblem characters, Homestuck characters, lots of anime characters, and other fiction that spawns a lot of fanfic

I guess that makes sense. Since all those characters are just super broad archetypes it's probably easier to fit them in whatever story you want to tell with them? I just never been interested in coming up with my own stories so this whole thing just completely baffles me.

Blizzard if nothing else knows how to use the community to their advantage. The designs, the cosplay guides, even the porn DMCAs which just brought more attention to that portion of the community.

The comics exist and give some characters much more of a personality but I found them pretty dry. The animated shorts are really tiny snippets of who they are. Like the one about Hanzo and Genji was pretty well done. The rest were okay. I think we need a proper story mode or some animated feature length film/series to really understand who they are. But yea, right now, they're just archetypes with random one-liners.
