I wonder whether the same gaffers who brag about not knowing anything about pop culture get mad when friends and family compare them to Big Bang Theory characters.

I find it funny that this is similiar to the Kirkhope thread where people were going "who?" and others were going "wtf?! You don't know him? just google him...you're on the internet."......which is kinda the same here.

The ubiquity of popular culture was struck with a fairly heavy blow with the rise of the internet. The notion of a star is not what it once was. Just because people don't know someone who is on heavy rotation on the radio/network TV does not mean they are trying to be edgy. We are not living in the age of Michael Jackson and Madonna anymore.
I actually think it's the exact opposite, everything these celebrities do is readily available for the whole world to see thanks to the internet and specially social media, they are getting more attention/ (free) marketing than ever.
For example; the Kardashians are utterly irrelevant here on Dutch television but thanks to social media and other sites they're being put on the spotlight.

But that's how I see it though.

That was Lorde.

Should have been Lordi instead.

As for Grande being well-known, I'd obviously heard her name but had no idea what exactly she was famous for, as I never listen to radio, probably haven't watched TV in over half a year and only read online news so I can read only what interests me. For the longest time I thought she was Norwegian, as Grande is a normal surname here.

make sure the pudding isn't too soggy but that just ruins everything
Lol I'm completely out of touch and even I know her.

Enjoy her stuff I've heard too, tbh.

Maybe in the Americas.

The rest of the world is going: "Who?"

She's had top 10 hits in basically every major western country in the world.

Why do people on GAF from other countries love acting like their countries don't love the same shitty pop music?

That just depends on which part of pop culture you pay attention to.

The way TV and the internet works now, you can absolutely carve out a niche for yourself and cut off yourself from everything you're not remotely into. There's nothing ubiquitous about pop culture like the MASH season finale anymore. We're too fragmented for that.

Yeah, I'm not what you call the most up to date follower of popular music, but I know who Ariana Grande is. I don't care for her music, but also know her style is just not for me in general. Still, I know she's fuckin' popular.

Her music is not even that good compared to the King and Queen of pop.

Even Justin Biebers music skills are better.
What does "being good" have to do with "being popular"?

She was also on Broadway at a really young age. Don't care for her music much, but she's a pretty big get for this game.
