The announcement thread for Scalebound was what, 14-20 pages?
What was the announcement page length for Bayonetta 2 or Bloodborne or Horizon?

Compared to a number of similar profile games on GAF, Scalebound was not getting the attention it's cancelation suggests.

Think it was 14 pages and any thread after that struggled to go past 5.

So you opted for number two.

<Reasons> why pre-cancellation results of most anticipated game voting doesn't count for GAF anticipation.

And now what? What do you want to achieve with your decision that this thread shouldn't be used to discuss different aspects of the Scalebound cancellation?

If you're unhappy with the response that the probably outsourced CG game reveals by Microsoft garner, it might make sense to complain to them about their choice of reveal method.

What's the proper ratio of announced pages to cancelation pages?

If you can't see why this is such a hot topic I don't know what to tell you.

I know it's hard to read 180+ pages, but you just need a quick browse to see that since the very first few pages the conversation went beyond just Scalebound and that's why the topic is so big now

no, just being cheeky ;)

(edit: if MS changed CPUs it could have catastrophic effect for long winded games in development)
Nah, that's where their software comes in. Just look at the UWP games. Gears 4 on the PC is the same Gears 4 as on the Xbox and that runs on any beefy enough CPU.

For the people who keep popping up to post the oh so interesting observation that this thread is longer than the SB hype thread as a way to delegitimize and curtail discussion, you guys should just try directly asking mods to shut the thread down.

It'd be equally as obvious.

Where was Scalebound on the overall most anticipated games list?
(Assuming such a list exists).

And if such a list does exist, why would your response segregate Scalebound to just X1/W10 anticipated games, unless *gasp* it wasn't that anticipated by GAF in the grand scheme of things...

Like I said earlier... The renewed interest in the game seems mostly to shitpile on MS due to a lack of exclusives.

For what it's worth, I don't know any developers that have had a positive experience working directly with Microsoft. They're extremely controlling and hands-on, and everything is designed by committee and requires huge levels of executive buy-in. They are so desperate for success that everything becomes a giant exercise in avoiding risk, to the point that they don't even trust the developer they hired to make the game.

The main issue, though, is that MS is constantly changing overall strategies on a whim, and that impacts the products. Because everything has to fit the overall strategy, even if there was nothing really wrong with the original product before.

i.e. Signing a game as a single player game, then adding co-op later because the overall company strategy changed.

They also know that they're Microsoft, and they have a lot of clout and can't be easily sued. So they really play hardball on prices, contract renegotations, etc. even when they're in the wrong or drastically change the scope of a project.

For example, a friend's studio signed their indie game with MS. It was for a new MS platform, and they had to constantly renegotiate the contract to get paid. Why? Because they technically kept missing milestones because Microsoft wasn't delivering the APIs for that platform on time.

Why? Because Platinum fucked up?

We don't know the facts.

Yesterday, Kamiya's mental health wad eroding and he was taking time off. Today it is something different...

The truth is that we don't know.

Platinum is apologizing though...

Or maybe listen to what other devs are saying about working with Microsoft?

I like how you ignored my post....TLG cancellation thread was 140 pages before mods locked it when the story was proven false, these things are always big news...it's not just MS.

I didn't ignore your post, I read it, found it wanting and moved on with my life.
The Last Guardian was an incredibly anticipated game with huge buzz in comparison to Scalebound.

22. Behind Dragon Quest 11 and before Shenmue 3.

I used that terminology because Scalebound was changed mid-project to not be a Xbone exclusive.

If you think such posts qualify, then bring it up with a moderator.

I however think your questioning of the legitimacy of this topic is a way to stifle and derail discussion about the topics that have emerged in this thread.

Edit:
I didn't ignore your post, I read it, found it wanting and moved on with my life.
And that's basically the confirmation of the last sentence. I applaud your swift resolution of your cognitive dissonance.

This is probably your bias showing. The discussion has been a great deal more nuanced than a "shitpile."

Maybe trying reading a few pages of the 180+

TLG is a niche game lol, come on. Scalebound was one of MS big tent pole releases by a well known dev ,at 3 e3's, it is not often a game with that kind of exposure this far into development gets cancelled, why is it hard to understand this got a big reaction?

I have been keeping up with it.
For the most part my impression of the thread is it's been:
- fuck! I wanted that game
- this game was niche and wouldn't have sold anyway
- what is a niche game anyway, is Bloodborne niche?
- Bloodborne only sold 2 million totally niche
- if that's niche you guys need to find a dictionary
- Kamiya took time off for mental health
- listpalooza... What games, what games what games do MS have?
- I hope Kamiya is okay
- MS has had practices that are hostile to devs
- Kamiya never took off time for mental health? Insiders lied!!
- how does this bode for Crackdown 3?
- wow this thread is long
- Nephtes is trying to derail the thread
- no I'm not

Also, yes, I do have bias. Scalebound was on my list of most anticipated games.
I pretty much bought Final Fantasy XV because it was on sale and thought it would be a nice placeholder till Scalebound came out.
Horizon Zero Dawn is also on my list of most anticipated games. I'm biased for that too.
What's wrong with bias for a game?
Does that make me a bad person?

I never questioned the legitimacy of the thread, or at least I don't think I did.
I expressed surprise at the abject length of it given my impression of the lack of excitement for Scalebound.

I was excited for Scalebound.
I'm super disappointed it's cancled.
I am legit surprised this many other people give a shit based on the lack of enthusiasm for the game in both it's announcement thread and subsequent threads that came up concerning it's gameplay.

Please don't suggest that I want this thread shut down though.

Game looked like a hot mess so I ain't surprised it was cancelled, Looks like Platinum games won't be doing any more games with MS after this maybe?

Now just to wait another ten years for someone to find an early dev build on a test kit sold at a yard sale somewheres, or a leak. Hope isn't totally dead, just gotta play the waiting game for now instead, unfortunately

180+ pages for Scalebound cancelation. Incredible.

Amazing given the lack of excitement over the game.
Or at least my impression of lack of excitement around here for the game ...

If the game wasn't going to be on many people's radar... Why all of a sudden with it gone is it showing up like a foreign invasion of aircraft off the west coast?
It's a terrific marketing stunt. I look forward to playing Scalebound in September.

Scalebound was hugely anticipated on GAF.
I mean seriously they could have shown a vid of a turd looping and smearing puppies on loop and it still would be a huge event for GAF.
I mean seriously it's from GAF darling P*'s own Kamiya, what more do you need?
Was it warranted or not I have no idea but it's still a huge project from a really loved dev on here.
I mean come on, try to at least try a little.

Of course not, they had so many game working concurrently while such a huge undertaking (Scalebound) was under contract, look at the below list to get an idea of what their load was like (it's incredible). They must have had to move senior staff to other projects, when they missed milestones it more than likely forced MS to pull the trigger on the deal (we're talking year later). You take a contract out, you adhere to set milestones. MS had a lot to lose here given the number of years they had invested into it. I get the impression blame is to be given to both parties, but Platinum more than MS. The fact is we'll never know and just paint each company with whatever brush we are pre-disposed with to begin with ie Green or Blue.

- The Legend of Korra
- Bayonetta 2
- Transformers: Devastation
- Star Fox Zero
- Star Fox Guard
- Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants in Manhattan
- Neir Automata
- Granblue Fantasy Project Re:Link
- Lost Order

updated my 2017 games list:

edit: nm

This is both hilarious and sad at the same time.

Don't take anything Kamiya says, and try to extrapolate from it. He's still under NDA. MS makes anyone they work with sign those, and when you leave the company then you do so as well.

Standard practice at tech companies.

Thanks for that bit of info, I would never have guessed otherwise.

Your friend doesn't think much of his NDA then, the rebel that he is.

At this point, we have covered this point multiple times.

Others have good things to say, and others have not so kind things to say...

I am checking out of this thread. The Switch presentation cant come soon enough.

People forget Bloodborne and Scalebound were announced at the E3.
Most people were comparing them (even though you really can't compare the two games).

They were both considered the most important games for many people, since they were new IPs.
Cancelling Scalebound, is like if Sony were to cancel Bloodborne.

I don't even own a Xbone(and have no plans on ever owning one) but Scalebound being cancelled is still a huge shock to me.

Exactly, this is a microcosm of a trend that has been worrying me about XBox since 2009. I've been rooting for them to pull off a comeback for at least two years now, but this has let almost all the air out of the balloon for me. Since 2009, what first party games have they released? Here's a list - tell me if you can spot the trends.

2009
  • Forza 3
  • Halo 3: ODST
  • Halo Wars
  • Ninja Blade

2010
  • Alan Wake
  • Crackdown 2
  • Fable 3
  • Halo: Reach

2011
  • Forza 4
  • Gears of War 3

2012
  • Fable: The Journey
  • Forza Horizon
  • Halo 4

2013
  • Dead Rising 3
  • Forza 5
  • Killer Instinct
  • Ryse
  • Zoo Tycoon
  • Gears of War Judgement

2014
  • Forza Horizon 2
  • Minecraft
  • Project Spark
  • Sunset Overdrive

2015
  • Forza 6
  • Halo 5: Guardians
  • ScreamRide
  • Ori and the Blind Forest

2016
  • Dead Rising 4
  • Forza Horizon 3
  • Gears of War 4
  • Quantum Break
  • ReCore

2009
  • Demon's Souls
  • Infamous
  • Killzone 2
  • Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time
  • Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

2010
  • God of War III
  • Gran Turismo 5
  • Heavy Rain
  • Mag
  • ModNation Racers
  • White Knight Chronicles

2011
  • DC Universe Online
  • Infamous 2
  • Killzone 3
  • LittleBigPlanet 2
  • MotorStorm: Apocalypse
  • Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One
  • Resistance 3
  • Socom 4
  • Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception
  • White Knight Chronicles 2

2012
  • LittleBigPlanet Karting
  • PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale
  • Ratchet & Clank: Full Frontal Assault
  • Starhawk
  • Twisted Metal

I consider 2012 their worst year. By far.

2013
  • Beyond: Two Souls
  • God of War: Ascension
  • Gran Turismo 6
  • Puppeteer
  • Ratchet & Clank: Into the Nexus
  • Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time
  • The Last of Us
  • Killzone: Shadow Fall
  • Knack

2014
  • Driveclub
  • Infamous Second Son
  • LittleBigPlanet 3

2015
  • Bloodborne
  • The Order: 1886
  • Until Dawn

2016
  • Ratchet & Clank
  • The Last Guardian
  • Uncharted 4: A Thief's End

I've taken out most Move/Kinect games. I've also taken out any remake/reboot/collection or whatever you want to call them. I've taken out things like Buzz, SIngstar, Wipeout HD, Gravity Rush Remastered, Halo Anniversary, MLB : The Show etc etc (trust me, Sony lost much more than Microsoft did with this).

You can clearly see the differences between the two lists. Even when Sony had a low amount of games per year, it rarely is the same things. Not to mention they compensate with a lot of PSN games, especially this gen (during the X360 era, Microsoft has some awesome games on their platform).

Most importantly, there's been a lack of FPS in recent years. They did things like Destiny/Battlefront deals instead. While I was doing this list, some marketing deals made a lot more sense to me.

Since you included console-exclusive games like Quantum Break for X1, why not include Street Fighter V, KOF XIV or other FGs for PS4?

Yea you're right, I only put games published by Sony and created by Sony studios. Just to show that even within the company, diversity is a big focus.

Where is Journey?

Both of those lists also exclude the digital games for some reason. Though Into the Nexus started only digital if I remember correctly, so why are people sharing incomplete lists? =P

You really have to start asking questions of Microsoft's strategy (or lack of) at this stage. Scalebound was something that impressed me when it was first revealed so it's disappointing to see it join other MS produced titles consigned to the cancelled dustbin. Will this be the generation that kills off MS as a serious player in the gaming industry? I certainly hope not. The PS3/360 era was great precisely because of the strong competition between Sony and MS.

I wouldn't say MS is gonna get out of the market, but even if they did I think it's safe to assume competition will continue stronger than ever.

Sony knows they need to deliver good stuff if they want to keep their player base cause PC and mobile market aren't anything to joke with, specially when consoles are day after day approaching more to exatcly what a PC desktop is and when the mobile market is growing stronger and stronger.

I really wish another publisher would pick this up and save it for the gamers.

I asked that in the media create thread and most posters dont see MS wiling to sell it even if another publisher is interested.

MS probably sunk tens of millions of dollars into this. I don't see them selling it, even it they aren't going to use it. This isn't a situation like Toy Soldiers where they hand the IP back to the devs. This was supposed to be a tentpole release, and they can't risk it potentially showing up on another platform.
