Announcing games way before they're ready

What's up with this? It ain't a new trend, but it seems to be getting even worse as of late.

Atlus is a big offender with Persona 5, SMTvsFE, SMT (Switch), that new Persona-team RPG, EOV, and probably some others I forgot.

NMH3 hasn't even gone into development? Why?...

Its my biggest beef with the game industry.

Honestly Death Stranding and NMH3 can fall off a cliff.

Don't show me shit I can't play in less than 13 months

NMS got burned for it, It was at E3 for like 2 years... so dumb. FF15 was a 10 year shitshow, showing off something way too damn early.

Its such a weak ass way to pad a release schedule and it takes away opportunities from developers who have software that is ready to be marketed in a timely manner, only to be overshadowed by a bunch of posters talking about NOTHING from watching some corny CG trailer.

To grow hype and drive preorder. That helps studios see if it can be a good investment or they might need to change/cancel it.

It's like when Joseph Joestar lit his scarf on fire in order to "motivate" himself but it ended up looking super silly and it was basically just a distraction at best

NMH3 wasn't shown, he just confirmed development has started and which platform it is coming to, though it was never confirmed to be an exclusive by any means so we will have to wait and see, maybe 2018 E3.

I think Square is the biggest offender personally. FF13versus becoming FF15 is just one example but there is KH3, FF7R and DQ11 which is hopefully coming out soon, also Original FF13 took years after the 2005? E3.

It doesn't even matter. Suda didn't have a goddamn thing to even "announce". Nothing.

He should have never been on stage.

Don't worry, I'll vouch for them.
I suppose there is that. I'm generally a fan of their output, but it would be nice to see them announce more games that are less than 18 months out.
Hardly any larger developers does this. There are only a few exceptions.

I think just giving a title or a picture is fine, even years before release. It's when you put out the first trailer way too early that people get annoyed.

I really don't mind if the year they announce games two years off if they have a steady stream of games announced two years ago releasing presently.

If it's like Microsoft's 2014 E3 where they showed a bunch of CG and games years off(some still not released) with crap output for that year then yeah it sucks.

The No More Heroes 3 tease persuaded me more to get a Switch among other reasons, but I still really dislike how many opportunities Nintendo had to show off games and they didn't have much to show third-party wise.

DmC Devil May Cry got hit pretty hard by this. They only did about 6 months of work on the game before the TGS debut trailer got put out. Every video they put out from then on was still in early shape, and by the time it was out a lot of people made up their mind on it.

Sony thread? Sony thread

Sony?

Last I checked, I can't think of any notable announcements they've made this gen that are far off and at risk of being cancelled on a whim. Death Stranding is definitely years away, but I'd wager it will end up shipping mostly-intact.

If this is any thread, it's a Microsoft thread. Especially with their casualty-rate this gen.

Horizon would have made the cut if it hadn't been for the delay and GOW has a chance as well.

Last I checked that wasn't the issue being addressed. No need to get your undies twisted.

games take a long time to make, longer nowadays even
they're more expensive to make
pipeline isn't as huge as it use to be
marketing team has something to do
hype cycle

i think some of those reasons could be why, but yeah it sucks

Well yeah. But I would say of the three, Sony is the biggest offender. The Last of Us 2 is what, 3 years away? Why do we need to know about it now?

Sony isn't any worse about this than Nintendo and Microsoft. I'll remind you of the infamous January 2013 Nintendo Direct. And I'm still waiting on Crackdown 3, almost three years since its announcement.

I'm not seeing the issue with announcing a game really early, as long as it's communicated clearly to consumers that the project is far away. This is exactly what Sony and Naughty Dog did before revealing The Last of Us Part 2. They made clear the title is very early in development and a long way off. Not really seeing any issue with this approach. To me, the problem is when you start giving release windows and continually miss them, as was the case with Breath of the Wild. It's been pushed out of two calendar years. This is something I take issue with.

Some reason I come up with.
-Early announcement use as recruitment ad.
-Too expensive to have everyone sign NDA.
-Devs too excited want to share their excitement.
-Keeping secret is not healthy.

Death Stranding is announced so early to exploit the Konami fiasco, it has become part of it's marketing cycle. you can be sure that Kojima will remind us about Death Stranding once or twice every year all the way to release.

I don't mind it, sometimes I even love it. It's going to be fun speculating on what Death Stranding's about for the next 4-5 years.

Let me ask this. Why does it matter? There are countless other games to play and pass the time, and countless other games that will get announced and grab your interest between one game's reveal and release.

Is it merely a patience thing?

If all you can show is a cg trailer/tease, I would hold off. I would rather see gameplay the first time in some form, even if it's tiny, but knowing that it at least is out of the planning phases

Probably not at risk of being cancelled, but FF7 Remake and TLOU2 seem pretty far off.

Just once I'd love to see a publisher do the complete opposite, and unveil their secret project with no fanfare.

Something huge that wouldn't otherwise really need advance marketing to be successful. Like seeing the first trailer for GTA6, and at the end, it being revealed it will be available in stores within a week.

I'm sure I'll never actually see this happen though.

It's mostly a Japanese problem by the looks of it. They love getting people hyped for years to come... glad capcom waited until last June to reveal RE7 and they're being pretty good in general with Marvel coming out this fall and announced last month.

I'd rather not know about something I'm excited about until close to release. It can be kind of draining when you see the same game at trade shows for years and then you're speculating whether the game is in trouble, your hype my die down, they show off too much of the game, you think the game is closer to completion than it really is, etc. for example FF7 remake is "a ways off "according to nomura but I really thought we'd see something this year because of the announcement in 2015 (along with gameplay) and the multi part relaese.

Fallout 4 was pretty close. Saturn release?

Him coming on stage and announcing NMH3 is the literal only reason I preordered a Switch so it was a good move by Nintendo, it got them a sale.
The game isn't even in development yet. I mean I am sure you will find games to play, but man.

I have a really good answer to that, and it's something I've written in depth on before.

So hype and assumptions basically?

You don't have to be hyped and excited for something from announcement until it's out. That's what new trailers, previews, etc are for. In fact, it's completely okay to lose interest in a game and forget it exists.
