Yakuza 0. 1/24/17 Less than a month to go. Let's make a difference.

If its not to much to ask can I have a Yakuza supporter banner as well?
Sure thing

I saw someone say Normal was pretty easy. Is Hard worth playing on? Meaning, are the enemies smarter or just buffed up? Are there rewards for playing on Hard?

Things feel different this time. It's almost as if the planets are aligning and this game might do really, really well in the west.

This is my first Yakuza game. Five titles of ongoing narrative on different platforms was a bit daunting. Making a prequel was a really smart move that allowed newcomers like me to feel safe in diving into the series. I'm guessing many people felt the same way.

Lol no it won't. Zestiria on PC sold like 3x what a Yakuza title normally sells.

That was then, this is now.
Keep in mind that for the longest time, Zestiria was hovering a little over 50K until people realized it was going on sale some months ago and then it got over 100K more.
That's based on launch release at least.
Honestly if we are talking singular platforms, we won't know til SEGA writes about it. Until then though keep in mind that we are still getting Y1 remake and Y6 regardless.

That's just PC sales. It's also going to do over 100k on PS4 easily, Yakuza struggles to hit that much. Sorry, Yakuza isn't getting close to Tales, no title has even sold half as many. It's not a diss on Yakuza, Tales is just a much bigger franchise on more platforms. Whether we're getting Kiwami or Y6 doesn't mean a thing, different companies have different approaches. It's not like Yakuza titles don't aggressively discount digitally too, they're just not as big.

It's meaningless and we won't get a straight answer so why even bring up the comparison?

Just picked up the game from my local mom n pop and I'm absolutely loving it. It's my first Yakuza game and I'm already so invested in Kiryu's story. Haven't played much, just after the first boss fight but already I can see myself becoming a diehard Yakuza fan. Some good laughs in this too, mainly in the sidequests
Yanki sidequest is the best
. Now I want to go back and play the others just to see if any of the characters I'm being introduced to now are in those in some way. I feel that's where I might be missing out, on referential stuff.

One thing, does anyone know when I can play as the other guy on the cover? I checked the options and there's no way to switch from the beginning. I'm guessing he'll eventually show up in the story?

Yes story will make you alternate characters

Hard mode gives enemies more health, deal more damage and makes them more aggressive and I guess a bit smarter. On normal they are too laid back for my liking. If you've ever played an action game before then I really recommend starting it on hard, then bumping the difficulty down to normal (can do this at any time from the options menu) if you have issues with the game.

I keep hearing this game is somewhat similar to the dynasty warrior games, is there some truth to that?

I've played tons of Musou games, and this comparison is just not true in my eyes (just like the "Its GTA in Japan" comparison). In Musou you have 1000's of enemies surround you and maybe 1 of those might attack. Generals have a slightly higher chance of attacking, but generally don't (especially on anything below hard mode). They are really easy to button mash your way through. You can't do that against bosses in Yakuza, they'll body you if you try that since many have super armor... That and there are far less enemies on screen at any time, but at least they actually attack and do stuff! Your moves list (especially in later Yakuza games) is far more fleshed out than any Musou character I've used. I guess the only way I can see the comparison making sense is if you play the Yakuza series on an easy difficulty, since you could probably button mash your way through (most of) it.

I don't recall the other games getting me stuck so often in a barrage of attacks that I'm desperately trying to avoid or block. Then again maybe I'm just blocking those memories out. Sometimes this game seems to kick my ever loving ass on normal. Ha.

huh, i found the last game piss easy (to the point where i would engage in combat, put the controller down and make/eat food, and I'd come back still alive I AM 100% SERIOUS)

Here is a question, do you think it will be hard to go back and play 2-5 after playing 0? I wanted to replay the old games again but it won't happen before 0 is released.
No. the games all pretty much play the same and even the PS2 entries hold up just fine.

Pre-ordered already. this is the only game i'm getting this January. I'm just sad that i sold my PS3 before Yakuza 5 came out, but Yakuza 0 looks so freaking awesome.

What time is that in UK?

5 pm UK time

I'm pretty optimistic about review scores. Zero is a really fun Yakuza game and works as a stand-alone story. It's not being marketed as "GTA Tokyo" this times, it's coming out on current-gen hardware, the wacky side-missions are perfect material for streamers, Sega seems to have provided many reviewers with early copies so RE7/GR2/DQ8 releasing so close to Y0 won't be such a big problem, ...

Other than the slightly aged technical presentation and maybe some of the repetitiveness of the gameplay, it should do fairly well with reviewers. Hoping for a MC score around 85. This series deserves a second chance in the West.

My first and possibly only purchase this year. Can't wait.

My friend no!

We need you for Kiwami week in the summer, please reconsider!

Outside of the original and Ishin, I've found the Yakuza games to be on the easy side.

And even Ishin is easy now that I've leveled up Kazuma enough. Taking that game down to normal allows me to blast through the bosses so quickly.

Considering Yakuza 5 has the highest critical acclaim in the series, I'm pretty hopeful Yakuza 0 should at least match it.

I hope TGC don't let me down again, last time I preordered something from them it didn't even ship on release date, let alone get to me for release date........

Just finished writing my review. Should hopefully get posted at 4am here when the embargo goes up. I'll make sure to link it in the review thread when I wake up!

considering Yakuza 5 is the worst game in the series i truly hope so :D

It's my favourite in the series so I'll have to respectfully disagree :p

Crazy taxing, dance off battles, punching bears in da nuts, boss fight after boss fight, the most long battles in the series, hard pressed for me to say the previous 4 mainline games could top that and we finally had more than 13 chapters again!

I do think though that with the removal of Haruka it should help reviewers who didn't really enjoy the rhythm game nature 5 had but then this wasn't much of a issue reviewers had, more of a problem the fanbase had with the game.

Check to make sure that you don't have an autographed item you get from a sidequest in your inventory as equipped or enemies will just pummel you.

Wait, what? How many hours exactly will need to pass for embargo to lift? I thought it'd be 4 hours from now.

It's so weird, I honestly don't think many reviewers even played it much or through to completion. When I read through their reviewers there's almost no discussion of the very slow pacing in Saejima's section and the complete absence of fighting in Haruka's section.

Isn't that the point? How is that a negative? Haruka's section was great, and there were dance battles. Not to mention all the different crap you had to do as an idol, like TV appearances, the creepy running game, and the like.

I'll check. Yeah game isn't hard but I'll come upon groups of enemies that seem to almost stun lock me from barely being able to do anything. Hehe.
