Yakuza 0 Review Thread

How do you guys have your copy already? Different release dates for different regions? I ordered through Amazon and I chose free shipping. I won't be able to play until like, the 30th :( Hopefully that is like a pizza delivery estimate and it actually gets here faster.

5 chapters in total. Sounds like you are doing everything (side missions/mini games) as you go? If so, I doubt you'll be done before the 140 hour mark! (which was how long it took me to 100% it).

My bad I'm actually at Chapter 4: Part 2 right now. Just got done with the hunting missions. I did not do all the taxi side missions but to my understanding you can get back to those later, definitely like to finish those.

9/10 NeoGAFfers don't understand statistics. The other 3/10 don't care.
Does the charismatic autobiography make enemies more aggressive?

I have not played 0 yet but aside from the story, I also think it is worth to consider that the gameplay has advanced throughout the series. Playing Yakuza 2 first may be the best from a gameplay perspective. But others can comment on that better than me, probably. Same goes for the other entries, though from the looks of it (and Y0 being cross gen) the gameplay differences aren't huge.

If you play 1 then you'll get most of the little references that 0 has, so you should be good with either choice. It is worth playing 2 through first though, there is at least one side quest in 0 that has a great nod to one of the characters that appears in 2.

Depending on where you are now with Y1, you could pause that game and play Y0 first. It's a damn good prequel and with Kiwami coming out this summer it's a prefect set-up for that.
Thanks for the replies! I've just got to chapter 7 in Y1 and I'm enjoying it so far, as dated as some of it is. I think I'll probably play 2 first if I can, as I don't know if I'd be put off playing it if I played 0, with all its advancements and improvements, then went back to one of the earlier games.

0 is still getting bought as soon as its on UK PSN, though!

Ended up looking up some Amazon japanese site reviews for the games. Yakuza 0 has done really well with japanese as well but Yakuza 6 has considerably more negative reviews. I hope it won't be a let down after 0 and Kiwami when it comes here.

85 on Metacritic, currently the best PS4 game of 2017. I guess that will last until Horizon.

I had already preordered because I knew it was good, but the positive reaction of western media is reassuring. Very happy for Yakuza.

It will last until Nioh is reviewed. : p

This is quite unexpected tbh, hopefully the increased awareness will lead to better sales :)

If P5 garners similar reactions (very likely), SEGA should be very happy with their output this year.

Yeah, on the final chapter you'll be able to go back and do stuff you've not done, or you can just do them in Premium Adventure mode if you prefer.

Yes, it does make enemies more aggressive. Quite useful for some games in the series (Yakuza 4) as otherwise the game is a bit too easy for my liking.

Without spoiling it, basically there are some story bits that it seems most fans didn't like (some of which I agree with, some I don't agree with) plus some legacy content (mini game activities) are not present in 6 (but that didn't bother me that much, as there is still plenty to do and I enjoyed what was on offer). Basically I still loved the game, I wouldn't say its the best in the series but I do know I can't stop playing it! (even after finishing the story I must have sunk a good 20+ hours into the side stuff and I'm still not done yet).

Not like I want this to happen, but I am surprised that the SJW hasn't picked apart this game yet. There's some controversial stuff in this game that are way worse than some of the other games they complained about.

The game isn't out yet.

Most of the reviews I've read spend a paragraph or two on the disappointing treatment of women in the game, but also find the way it gives texture and depth to male characters that would be one dimensional in most other games refreshing. Kinda of a win some lose some situation for people interested in gender representation in gaming.

It's not really helpful to use the term SJW, btw, it's so overused and broad as to be meaningless these days. I'm 99% sure people would consider me one, and I'm really excited to play this game.

same way SMT gets away with stuff like murdering every religion's gods

too niche for them to notice lol

Agree with using term SJW.

It immediately colours your input as bland and shallow. Try to use more descriptive terminology in the future.

Well done on outing yourself as an utter bore who has nothing interesting to contribute with this SJW nonsense.

I've been a fan of the series ever since the first game on PS2 but I recognise that there are things about this series that are problematic and worthy of discussion and criticism. I want to read articles about this series that are more than just bland reviews of the graphics and the game play. Arguably the last time a Yakuza game got an interesting article written about it was in 2010, if Yakuza 0 inspires more people to write about it then so much the better.

Tuesday release in Europe often means some companies ship copies early to ensure they arrive for release date.

In my case it arrived yesterday.

respect to the yakuza who's into sega arcade games.

i just booted up 5 for the first time and i was blown away by the voice work and the writing. i'm very curious to see where the story leads to. love the voice work for kazuya.

maybe i'll back pedal to 3 and start from there.

A lot of things to unpack from such a short post but I'll try. You say you don't want it to happen but then you seem disappointed because there are 'way worse' stuff they've complained about.

If you mean the crowd that thinks there should be better representation in video games haven't yet complained a lot about a game that is not out yet, no worries I'm sure there will be discussions about it. I've read some reviews that brought up how women are treated in this game and I felt it worth noting as well in my review but not expanding on because I feel that's a longer subject that goes into spoiler territory.

And I look forward to people playing and beating the game, not just because it's a good game but because there's a lot of interesting conversations that can be had about some of that controversial stuff. Personally I think most of it will not be a problem even for the 'SJW' crowd you are concerned about. The main characters encounter some things but often are offering assistance if the person wants it. For example the sidequest where
school girls are selling their underwear
has more to do with the consequences of bullying and of one person being too young to realize there might be consequences to their actions and generally resolves in a good-hearted way. There are ones times when that works against it
the abused foreign sex worker that ends up marrying her abuser and they all have a good chuckle over pizza
for example I thought was messed up.

There are many weird, wonderful and downright odd moments in the game that I think will inspire people to talk about it, which whether that's critically or not, makes me happy because people will be talking about Yakuza. You say you don't want that to happen but I'm looking forward to it!

Yakuza 3 is better if you played both Y1-Y2 because it's a natural evolution of the story of those games. Unfortunately is also the weakest story in the mainline games.

Yakuza 5 is also better if you played Y4 because most of the protagonists were initially introduced in Yakuza 4. Since you should be in the beginning of Y5, there's still time to go to Y4.

Or go to Y0 and play with everyone, which I think it will be the best.

100 hours? I'm cancelling my preorder.

The completion percentage relates mainly 90% to the side stuff you can do in the game. You can do the main story in 20-30 depending on your pace. Its only if you want to eat all the food, do all the side stories, complete all the mini game requirements etc. that you'll reach the 100+ hour mark.

I see they brought back the English titles for the dramatic text, not just subtitled(i.e. when you fight bad guys). Nice touch.
