Resident Evil 7 - PC Performance Thread

Saw this on the Geforce forums. Hopefully a fix for the stuttering everyone is talking about.

Screenshot_2017_01_24_07_41_12.png

Haven't had a chance to try the game out myself but I have two 970s so presumably I'd be affected. SLI profile hopefully...but they've been terrible for that lately.

Just a quick and dirty comparison with steam screenshot (didn't have fraps turned on and was lazy)

smaa @ 1.4 res scale everything max variable reflections CA Off
fxaa+taa @ 1.4 res scale everything max variable reflections CA On
fxaa+taa @ 1.4 res scale everything max variable reflections CA Off

Definitely prefer the cleaner look of smaa and no ca.

Just thought I'd report, ran it through GeForce Experience and it's running near-flawlessly for me on the first try; 2560x1440, everything cranked up, MB off, FXAA, SAOO - hitting around 100fps average on a 1070, 6700k, 16GB RAM. Passed the dinner scene, too.

What kind of rig are we looking at for acceptable 4k performance?

Would an OC'd 6700k and an OC'd 980ti do the job on this or is it more demanding?

I did the same thing a while ago, and I'm able to run the game at 60fps now. I'm still getting this really horrible case of pixel shimmering though. It's fucking everywhere in the game, and it's so bad that it's absolutely ruining the presentation. It literally looks like someone threw up glitter on any "wet" surface that is supposed to be shiny.

Turn reflections to variable.

I'm playing with a Gigabyte 970 on Windows 10. It runs smoothly.

I think there is room for a HD texture mod, unless I'm clueless when I set textures to very high.

There was this weird thing where it wasn't starting the game in full screen. I had to manually set it each time I started the game.

I've gone through literally every single in game graphical option, and the only thing that changes is using anything other than FXAA + TAA makes it even worse. I've dealt with this before in previous games, but it was almost always sporradic. I've also dealt with seeing the "seams" of polygons, but it was only occasional. Here, I literally can't walk two steps in any area that's "wet" without being bombarded by a blizzard. It's especially bad in the basement area in the corridors.

2600k @ 4.4, 970.

Obviously I have to play with the settings because I turned some things down/off at 4k HDR and I'm getting 90+ fps.

I do have vync off though in game, because on boot the input delay was disgusting. I haven't turned it on in nvidia control panel. But right now I only noticed the screen tearing in the FMVs?

I'll get back on it later to see what I can actually turn on without destroying frame rate, etc.

This game is fucked for me. Hdr keeps turning on when i don't even have a hdr tv, and when i turn it off everything looks crushed. But then everything looks too washed out. I have no idea what's going on. Broken piece of shit.

game looks kinda blurry, I maxed everything but didnt mess with the resolution scaling and that other option that says normal/interlaced, I dont know what they do lol

To the people with stuttering on 970s. Try lowering texture quality, at very high the game fills up to 7.2gb @ 1080p on my 1070. Of course maybe it is just reserving so much memory because of reasons and not using it, but it still might be worth a try.

edit: uses 8gb @ 1440p + 1.1 render scaling (2816x1584?)

edit 2:
Textures aren't thrilling anyway, not matter the settings.

I highly recommend turning TAA off. It makes things a lot blurrier. I'm just using SMAA with resolution scale set to 1.5.

I'm 1-2 hours in and it runs great so far with everything ~maxed.

1440p G-Sync
6700K 4.4Ghz
32GB
1080

Haven't checked the framerate, but it feels like it's constantly in the 100s. Haven't noticed a dip so far.

What is going on with the reflections though?

Not sure about reflections, but I get a lot of well, 'shimmering' I guess you could call it, on the floors of the house. Don't know if it's an aesthetic choice, just seems a little off.

Thought the port was solid, sorry some of you are having issues. No stuttering, no lag, no borked effects on my rig - 3570K @ 4.5GHZ, GTX 1080 FTW, 16GB Ram

HDR - Anyone know how to get HDR to work with NVIDIA cards? Everytime I plug my desktop via HDMI to my 4K TV, the signal won't be read unless I disable HDR on the TV. HDR works for my PS4, so idk what the issue is. As far as I know, my HDMI cord is the latest compliance.

GeForce 970 Twin Frozr V (376.19 drivers)
5820K@4.2 GHz
16 GB

Game @1080p, maxed, SSAO Variable, FXAA + TAA.
I had some stutter, starting from the kitchen.

Turning down Shadows to High and turning off Shadow Cache solved my problems.

I'm forced to use V-Sync, BTW, since playing in the 60-80 FPS range make this engine tear on my 120Hz monitor.

It should just work.

Are you plugging it into the same port you normally use for the PS4? If not, make sure you've enabled HDMI Deep Color or whatever it is on that port.

Does it look like a bunch of white dots? For me this is maddening. I'm not getting any actual performance problems, but I just can't get rid of the damn glitter blizzard.

edit: Might just be Chromatic Abomination that you're seeing. It makes everything look distorted, as though you're looking through a thick piece of glass.

It should just work.

On a 2016 LG OLED anyway, you can't even play the game without the TV forcing you to use HDR. If you have HDMI Ultra HD Deep Color OFF, the TV tells you that you're going to turn it on and restart, whether you want to or not when the game launches.

Interlaced rendering mode seems to be similar in function to Temporal Reconstruction. I get double the framerate of normal rendering using this, which make it feel very nice with mouse/keyboard. However, the picture quality does suffer due to bluriness so I set the internal resolution scale higher.

Yeah, I noticed that too. I think there's a setting for that, but not sure which one.

Are you using TAA and CA?

nope just SSAO or whatever its called. Its probably the res scaling at 1.0, if I put it 1.5 the game runs much slower, and at 2.0 its unplayable.

my rig is i5 4690j
16gb ram
2 X 970 SLI (but sli probably isnt working)

playing 1080p with everything maxed except the aforementioned res scaling

Game started in HDR mode in 1080p@24fps. I shut HDR mode off and now the game is extremely washed out, even with the brightness set to minimum. I'm playing in a 1440p gsync monitor, I don't know what's going on.

Exact same thing happening to me. It seems to play and look fine in HDR mode and changing the resolution/fps made things play fine. Without something to compare it to, it seems to look fine, but there's obviously something going on that isn't quite right.

Hmm that is really bad news. I also have 970 and demo was quite ok for me. I do not think that I can play with stuttering. Anyone else with 970 here?

I have a 970 and I did get some stutter. I switched the rendering mode to interlaced to get double the framerate so it wouldn't bother me as much.

Anyone tried switching between Interlace and Normal rendering methods? Interlace seems to add some kind of weird noise effect.

Yes, I think interlaced rendering mode is similar to Temporal reconstruction and checkerboarding. It doubles my framerate but the image is not as crisp.

You're right, Sanctuary. It's Chromatic Aberration - I remember it from the demo. Definitely recommend turning it off.

Everyone's shadows look like this? It's very ugly. Any fixes?

shadowsf9sba.png

My game is running great on a 1080 4690k at max settings and 1440p, however i'm getting this horrible shadow effect too and I can't for the life of me get it to look better.

Is it just meant to look like this or what? It also seems to be at its worst with sunlight ie, getting it in the kitchen and outside but not as bad with artificial light.

OK, so after trying it with RE7 specifically, I finally got my desktop to work on my TV in HDR. To be clear, I could NEVER get this to work prior to today. Shadow Warrior 2 neither. So let me break it down for others that might have the same issues, especially with RE7.

TV: vizio m65-d0

  • I cannot run my desktop outside of the game in HDR. I had to turn the setting off.
  • Go to the game.
  • Game detects HDR mode even though the TV is not presently set to it.
  • Ignore HDR config startup (for me HDR wasn't actually on yet.)
  • Turn off HDR mode (which was incorrectly listed.
  • Choose resolution settings and such.
  • Fullscreen Mode needed.
  • Turn HDR back on - at this point my TV lost its mind for a second then came back.
  • My TV automatically enabled HDR but not visible through the setting toggle, I had to look at the display signal status.
  • Readjust the game display settings (resolution, etc)
  • If washed out - make sure your TV didn't automatically change your color profile.
  • Configure HDR brightness.
  • Boom.

I managed to get the game working in HDR at 1080p at 120hz (for w.e reason 4k was locked to 29.96 refresh rate [my other games work at 60 in 4k though]).

tl:dr: Start the game first before any TV HDR settings are on. Skip HDR setup until you can re enable it manually in the game settings, which might trigger your TV to reactivate HDR on its own.

It's here - http://store.steampowered.com/app/530620/ - not sure why they didn't use the "Download Demo" button that steam store pages sometimes have, such as - http://store.steampowered.com/app/418240.

Who needs logic, eh?

One reason devs do it is, if I remember correctly, you can't download a demo after you've purchased the game. Because the Demo contains content not in the final game, they probably wanted to keep it available as its kind of a prologue of sorts to the game.
